Verizon has confirmed to customers in stores and online that its network is having an issue on Saturday. Many people have been unable to connect and make or receive calls for hours, while DownDetector’s tracker peaked in the afternoon at around 3:30PM ET with more than 20,000 reports. Some customers report their service has continued to function throughout the day, so it’s unclear what the cause is exactly.
Downdetector’s outage map showed hotspots in many cities, and Verizon didn’t specifically list affected areas. On X, the @VerizonSupport account confirmed the issue in response to customers’ questions, but didn’t have additional details on restoration or how widespread it is

I've been using #Manjaro for years as my #Linux distro of choice and I'm toying with the idea of moving to #CachyOS.
This is for desktop use only, my servers are all running #BSD anyway.
My home directories are on a separate partition anyway, so it's not like it's a ton of effort to change distros as long as I remember to re-create the cron jobs.
Has anyone made that jump and was it an (unspecified) improvement?
I jump from linux mint to debian couple of months ago, it was more of a jump back, I used #debian between 2004 to 2006 heavily after that for a while I was using ubuntu/xubuntu then long time mint, it was really nice, but I missed debian I am back, feels like home, mint and ubuntu was having too many updates everyday, it is more quite in debian. And #Cinnamon is a bliss, I like gnome and kde, used them long time but they have been heavy always, I also like Xfce or Windowmaker too but cinnamon is more like stable and user friendly.
@thejvmbender I do use Linux Mint for a regular "daily driver" type Linux - basically as a direct Windows replacement. The machine where I was distrohopping today is more of a development workstation so I do want pretty up to date packages (hence my usage of Manjaro).
I ended up with #opensuse Tumbleweed, which is probably halfway between the Arch-type bleeding edge and the stable distros like Debian and Debian-based ones.
I usually use Xfce or Enlighenment as the desktop and they work well on both OpenSUSE and Manjaro.

The rabid amount of Linux fanboyism on Lemmy is quite off putting in general. Any conversation about Microsoft gets brigaded with “Just use Linux!” even if the conversation has nothing to do with it. It makes it a pain to have any decent discourse about things.
Think people who got on lemmy originally lean techy (and thus more likely to use linux and be passionate about it), and people who joined after the IPO thing have more diverse reasons for abandoning reddit.

It might be able to get the job done for small tasks, but it is not a serious tool for serious people. I'm sorry. I'm as pro-FLOSS as anyone can get, and even I recognize that right now there's just no competition in the design department. Affinity is Mac-only, and comes with its own problematic aspects.
Except it really isn't, unfortunately. As someone who fucking hates adobe and Photoshop, GIMP falls far short. Photoshop is made to work as part of a toolkit, and GIMP isn't interested in any form of compatibility. Take, for example, an issue that's been around (and in the bug tracker) since the release of 2.10. Something about the way GIMP handles colors means that most programs can't use alpha channels output by GIMP correctly, and see it as having much higher contrast than it's meant to. The stance seems to be that this is intended behavior. However, this is clearly not the case, as even when only using GIMP, re-importing the image shows that, even though the contrast is correct, data was still lost.
Show me an OSS alternative to Excel that actually does tables, one of the most used, basic functions in excel.
I use tables every day for things like:I have a list of movies, sort them by producer. Or by production date. Or main actor. All these require a a single click on a column, something Open Office devs refuse to ever implement.
I use Linux every day for my servers, but not as my desktop. There's too much stuff like this that I don't have time for.

agree 100% on gimp. It took me about a year to get used to it and now I have a free license for photoshop at work, but I still prefer gimp 2.8 on my work computer with windows. At home I use Gimp on linux all day nearly every day and do texture editing for games all of the time. Very productive tool.
I think its mostly sunk cost and "i dont want to invest time to learn new things" that keeps people on windows.
Work is a separate thing. My work laptop runs windows, a matter I dont have a say in. But for personal use cases? I feel there are exceptionally few that are more than "i have to change the programs I use and learn how new ones work". And if that's too major a barrier for someone to overcome, good for them. The least they can do is say "I dont want to use Linux because its too much effort".
To a lot of people it's difficult. Vendor lock-in, support, cartels (the old kind) and familiarity are very important factors in choosing what you're going to use to compute things.
We should embrace the new ones and build things that they are going to use.
There are legitimate reasons not to use Linux, but the user interface is not one of them, Linux can be way friendlier UI-wise than windows, see Desktops like cinnamon.
The only issue I have with my Index is that linux somehow prioritizes it over my main monitor when booting so i have to plug it in after booting and then all works fine.
Yeah, linux can be almost anything you want it to be. It'll run faster and look and feel just the same as windows, if not better. The only bad thing, and I say this as someone who's still on windows and will switch soon^tm^, is that there's a lot of work that comes with that.
A friend of mine who's all about linux is always fixing something about his installation. Though from what I know, he's using Arch, which apparently is less stable/needs more work to get going (something about bleeding edge).
Only reason why I haven't changed yet is because of VR and adobe programs. As soon as VR is a bit more seamless and I get replacements for adobe I'm off of windows.
WiVRn from quest app store, wivrn desktop app. I also needed xrizer nightly for secondary gun mode to work in half life alyx. Can't guarantee much else though since I only really play beat saber.
Yeah same for me with my rift cv1 the current driver altough better than before is still pretty bad in comparison to windows like 50fps at best and with other drivers it gets 28 fps.
What Linux are you using? I wanted to do the switch soon to either zorin or buzzite, but I would also like to keep using my valve index. Reading this here makes me reluctant to complete the switch.
I am using opensuse but it is hard to build monado or openhmd with it necause some packages you need to get from fedora because they dont exist or have a version tag with _SUSE which makes it not see that the package is there. I would recommend something more mainstream: Arch, fedora, debian and etc. But bazzite should work I think I succeefully ran my rift on it for a little bit.

There’s a million billion reasons to knock MacOS, but saying it’s too locked down in a thread about Linux is wild. They’re both Unix based OSes. They’re siblings. If you’re comfortable enough with a command line to terminal your way through managing Linux then you’re capable enough to terminal your way through MacOS and get it to do anything you could get Linux to do.
And I hope you're not dumb enough to stay on 10 after end of support. The 0-day fallout for the Nintendo 3DS was pretty big, people had been sitting on exploits for months waiting for the final EOL patch to drop. For a higher-value target like Windows 10? It's gonna be terrifying. Get "Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024" from the mass grave if Windows is the only OS that works for you - it has lower hardware requirements and significantly less crapware. But don't stay on 10 past EOL.
Microsoft owns GitHub, which hosts mass graves. If they wanted people to stop using Windows and Office for free, they could make that happen by flipping a few switches. Given a choice between "pirating" Microsoft products and using an alternative, Microsoft wants you to use their stuff for free. Anything but give Linux any oxygen.
It's Microsoft's own activation mechanism, not some backdoor crack. The point is they know full well it exists and are doing nothing to curb it, because they don't want FOSS picking up steam. Microsoft doesn't make their money off consumers. They make their money off enterprises that don't view Linux environments as feasible because all their workers have ever known is Windows.

i think the only things these days for 'unactivated windows' (home, pro editions) is inability to 'customize the desktop' (change wallpaper, theme...) and occasional activation nags.
it doesn't quit working or shutdown (iirc enterprise or server trials do that after they expire, though) or quit getting updates or anything like that.
I highly doubt they can't stop it and slightly suspect they don't want to. You can install any version of Windows (even enterprise), use MASgrave, wipe the whole thing, reinstall it, and it'll pass online activation as genuine. There's just no way that's an accident.
