Margaret Thatcher, PM of the UK through the 1980s, was infamous for saying that there is no such thing as society, just individuals.

Which is a bit like saying there's no such thing as a city, only individual buildings. Or, there's no such thing as the fediverse, only individual accounts.

Those who argue for opt-in federation between services (eg the opt-in forced on BridgyFed), rather than interop being the default. Those who argue for mass blocking of this or that service, not because of the behaviour of the people using them, but because we don't like the company that owns them. Those who believe in the fediverse as an ocean separating islands of like-minded people, instead of a way to explore and encounter people thinking thoughts we never knew were possible.

in reply to Strypey

These people too are arguing against the idea of a society larger than themselves, and their in-group.

That's not to say that all Muting/ Blocking is wrong or anything silly like that. Just that they should be a last resort, considered case-by-case (collectively as well as individually), not the default. Because a connection with this larger social space, and the opportunities for learning and collaboration it brings, is the whole point of online social network tools.

Tomorrow is Ollie's birthday. I think he'll be six. OMG. Here's a photo from 2022 with his then-favorite toy before he destroyed it.

I am sure there are other dogs who love humans as much as he does, but he ranks very high. If I walked up to a total stranger and started kissing them all over the face, I'd be in BIG trouble. Ollie does it and people's self-esteem goes up 500% in seconds. He's a walking ball of love. ❤️

The deed is done.

Saw this at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens today. Even amongst all the orchids it commanded attention. A sign around the corner revealed it to be a "bat flower".

thanks! I really should head over to the ATL botanical gardens with my camera to take a pic of that

will read.

13 years ago, in Shanghai I stumbled upon an arcade and spent the entire night playing King of Fighters with the regulars there. It was magical.

Missed my alarm this morning and got to the soccer game 5 mins after it started instead of 40 mins before... But we won the first game 2-0 and my son initiated the second goal from a clearance deep in our backfield. so we are doing OK. Hanging out in a parking lot with the AC on until 2:15 or so. Its hot but not as hot as last week.

So I'm setting up the #guix machine running #zabbix and it needs mariadb, so mariadb is installed, and I got around this bug: codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues/…

So now I need to set up mariadb but I can't figure out what the cli command is. though I got mycli installed... but how do I get connected as root and create users and dbs and tables?

in reply to Daniel Lakeland

It should be some sort of standard sequel command line. My recollection or assumption would be that the command line interface is somewhat standardized so say whatever MySQL had.

in reply to Jason844

figured someone beat me to that one, and somehow thought it might be you

I'm making a helper circuit for my LED lamp project. This I can reuse when switching either the LED strip or the controller hardware. It's a 1000uF capacitor that sits between Vcc and GND and a 1k trim potentiometer for the data line.

Went for a bike ride today and stopped by the small, free, Rosie the Riveter museum, owned by the national parks. It talks about WW2 at home - about the women who worked in factories, of course, and the role Richmond played in shipbuilding, but also the gains people of colour made during this time, as well as the internment of people of Japanese descent.

in reply to sanae (SF)

There are plans to remove anything "inappropriate" by September 17, so this is maybe the last opportunity to see the uncensored version of the museum. This small museum will become a lot smaller.

I took a bunch of photos of the exhibits that I think will go away. I'm thinking of putting them up on my blog (cause the alt text would be long) but here are some of the more concise ones

Remember that $30 million military parade the president forced on everyone in June? Now our dear leader wants a redo—by sea.

Under the guise of "restoring patriotism," the U.S. Navy is planning a larger parade for this fall after the president told aides he was “disappointed.” trib.al/O2qryx6

Anyone who's ever seen even a couple of photos of miners, coal picker children, sweat shop children, newsboy children, or tenements in the stretch from 1890 to 1920 knows perfectly well why Labor Day is so important.

My father hated the unions, and I was raised on stories of Hoffa and the Teamsters and the Mob.

But unions saved millions of lives, adult and children both.

I am not a holiday kinda guy. But I honor the men, women, and children who founded America's labor movement.

The Simons-Laufer Mathematical Sciences institute, or #SLMath (formerly the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, or MSRI) has recently restructured its program formats, and is now announcing three new research initiatives, whose applications open on Sep 1 2025:

* AxIOM (Accelerating Innovation in Mathematics) is a new, month-long research program at SLMath, designed to accelerate innovation and introduce transformative ideas into the mathematical sciences. Programs begin in Spring 2027.
* PROOF (Promoting Research Opportunities and Open Forums) is a two-week summer program designed to provide research opportunities for U.S.-based mathematicians, statisticians, and their collaborators in the U.S. and abroad, whose ongoing research may have been impacted by factors such as heavy teaching loads, professional isolation, limited access to funding, heavy administrative duties, personal obligations, or other constraints. Programs begin June-July 2026.
* Lasting Alliance Through Team Immersion and Collaborative Exploration (LATTICE) is a yearlong program which provides opportunities for U.S. mathematicians to conduct collaborative research on topics at the forefront of the mathematical and statistical sciences. Programs begin June-July 2026.

The image depicts a portrait of a woman from the 18th or 19th century. She is wearing a red off-the-shoulder dress with a white lace-trimmed bodice and puffed white sleeves. The dress is cinched at the waist with a gold sash. The woman has long, dark hair that falls over her shoulders. She is holding a piece of paper in her right hand, which appears to be a letter, and is looking off to the side with a contemplative expression. The background is dark, which contrasts with the woman's attire and draws attention to her. The painting style is realistic, with attention to detail in the textures of the fabric and the woman's skin.
