Someone just sent me a very angry DM because their replies to my #Akkoma posts (I don’t use Mastodon) showed up on #Piefed.
So let’s clear this up. When I tag a Piefed community like @movies@piefed.social or @videogames@piefed.social, your replies automatically appear on Piefed. On Piefed itself, the @ is swapped for a !—that’s how communities are marked.
That’s not a bug. That’s ActivityPub doing what it does best. Almost anything you post on Mastodon can show up elsewhere on the Fediverse.

Some people want transparency and control over how widely their posts are re-broadcast, often in order to limit the amount of harassment they get, which is valid.
I presume in this case they could delete the piefed at from their reply and it would then go only to you and not be re-broadcast on Piefed?

They clearly haven't recognised that it's a forum thread (I wouldn't have, I'd never heard of Piefed before so I'd have assumed those accounts were just a couple of individual people) so your post is useful.
I'm just wanting to clarify - are you then saying that it wouldn't be sufficient for them to remove the @ x @ piefed part and even if they did so, their reply would still appear to that community?

Don’t know—haven’t tested that out myself. But in this case, they mentioned the Piefed community handle.
Either way, here’s my point: if you reply to someone and things don’t go according to your mental model, don’t blame me—blame your mental model.
It is on you to check your post visibility. And more importantly, who or what you’re replying to. None of this stuff comes out of left field. This tech has been available for the past five years.
@zeborah @rimu Also, one further point—because this is actually a bone of contention for me.
I’ve never seen any real evidence that limiting post visibility reduces harassment. What I have seen, over and over, is people twisting that feature into a weapon. The most common way? Followers-only posts used to launch harassment campaigns.
Here’s the problem: when someone makes a public post, moderation can spot the harassment trail. But when it’s locked behind followers-only visibility, it becomes harder for mods to detect, document, and act on. It creates a kind of “closed-door” environment where people can rile up their followers, send them out to dogpile, and then claim innocence because the instigating post isn’t visible to outsiders.
So instead of being a shield against harassment, followers-only posts often end up being a smokescreen for it.
Lots of things have been around for 5 years but still come out of left field to some (or even many) people.
That doesn't mean people should blame or be angry at you. But I don't think they're to blame either for not knowing that it's possible for what looks in form exactly like an individual account to actually be a whole entire forum. And if someone's based their threat model on the world-as-they've-understood-it-to-date, then it's normal to feel nervous or upset to discover that they've accidentally put themself at risk and now have to completely rewrite that threat model.
(I don't have stats or evidence or anything but I certainly have seen a lot of people describe their *experience* that controlling the way they interact helps to limit the harassment they receive. If it works for them then I figure excellent, let's let them keep doing that.)
Anyway. Again, not about blame or anything, I was just trying to understand how it works because I know nothing about Piefed. It's a shame Mastodon isn't able to display a distinction between individual handles and forum handles but it is what it is, so good to now be aware.

@ricardo Day five. Wow, time flies.
I used dry bandages under tape yesterday and 20 hours later they were completely dry.
No oozing goo or blood. There was blood on one of two incisions the first morning after the procedure but that was it.
I also didn’t use pain medication yesterday, IIRC, and if I did, it was only Tylenol.
Any discomfort while twisting is minimal and… no worse than what was mitigated by the procedure.

I hope the surgery works but they regularly do this surgery on people who don't need it and it fails. 😭 The root cause is not in the wrist it's in the elbow, shoulder, or upper chest. The doctors usually don't know this, but massage therapists who specialize in *medical* sports massage do. Find someone certified in CSMS. My wife has been a godsend for her ability to cure my issues with simple methods to fix the cramped/stuck muscles that cause massive dysfunction down the rest of the arm. She has these neat tools for scraping the muscles and you can literally feel the problems get worked out because it's like grit/sand in there being removed.
Either way I hope your problems are solved with the surgery. RSI issues are so awful and debilitating.
