This is a screenshot of the final position of the chess game I won in 14 moves yesterday. I've taken to playing the King's Gambit a lot when I have the white pieces. I got the opportunity to sac a knight on f7 and then went on a king hunt, finally driving the black king to b6 where I delivered mate with Qb5++. You can see I had a huge lead in development. The only minor piece that black ever moved was its king's knight.
Unsure of how to deal with the news that's dropped today and makes me feel like being out in public will get more dangerous for trans people here in the USA.
Do I still go to the chess club on Sunday, take the risk that I might get clocked as being trans and that there'll be some person there who will think they need to harass a trans person?

Well, I think the verdict is in on my power supply mods. I've been watching it, making sure all is good, and it's been ice cold, near ambient the whole time. So I think it's a win! Much quieter, much cooler. I've been running FT8 on it all day and things have gone perfectly smoothly, so I'm very happy with how it turned out!

@RealNameTBA How is the system we use to ship package updates for GrapheneOS and offer optional components not installed by default useless? It's a very important core part of the OS.
Okay, yes, it is good for the half-dozen Graphene-supplied apps. But now there's a batch of other stuff: text editors, a language-teaching program, and so forth. All of it without description or details such as whether it is a paid service. Click on anything and you're at the download page which with few exceptions offers no description, just the download button. Which regularly downloads the application. Starting the app sometimes then involves a configuration and registration page, and only after that do you even find out what the damned thing is. Which frequently suggests that the program is some sketchy thing glomming onto the privacy and safety reputation of GrapheneOS. Not a useful thing and not a good look.
@RealNameTBA Absolutely none of that is true. You're wrongly conflating the GrapheneOS App Store with Accrescent. Accrescent is not a GrapheneOS app and is not developed or funded by GrapheneOS. It's not marked as being a GrapheneOS app and is very clearly an entirely separate thing from our App Store. Accrescent is in Alpha and very clearly not what the UI is going to be once it's further along. It will have categorization including based on whether apps are open source. Entirely different app.
@RealNameTBA We provide it so people have a way to securely install it and then securely obtain other apps through it. Accrescent is in Alpha so the user interface is far from complete including categorization of apps and not a lot of apps are available in it. We've decided not to focus on distributing developer builds of apps since Accrescent is building that already with a good approach. It's going to get a lot better over time, It's quite new and doesn't have a lot of funding yet.
Might want to point that out, in that the app store is assumed by users to be a place where only approved, safe, reliable things are found, and not the alpha version of a distributor of unknown apps.
@RealNameTBA Accrescent is a safe and reliable app. It's not distributing 'unknown' apps. It's a safer way to obtain apps than the Play Store. It's not limited to open source apps but will have filtering to choose to only see those if you want or to check if the app is open source. A proposal has been made for verifying reproducible builds in the future too if you care about that, although the benefits are overstated.

Last week, after collecting evidence, Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem reported about two murders of unarmed Palestinian civilians on the Westbank by the IDF earlier this year.
From btselem.org/firearms, regarding the Open-Fire policy (see also the first screenshot): ❝ Open-Fire Policy - 11 November 2017 Over the years, Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. [...] According to the open-fire regulations, live ammunition may be fired in two situations only. First, shooting to kill is permitted when members of the security forces or other individuals are in life-threatening danger. Even then, the use of firearms is permitted only if there is no other way to avert the danger and only against the assailants themselves. Second, members of the security forces may only shoot at a person’s legs, as the last phase in an attempt to arrest the person in question, only after they have given warning and fired in the air, and only when no one else is in danger of getting hurt. [...] Sometimes the regulations are interpreted broadly, such as the artificial expansion of the term “life-threatening” to include circumstances in which soldiers’ lives are not actually in danger, such as stone-throwing or tire-burning during protests, or fear of damage to the Separation Barrier. Another broad interpretation is permission to fire at the upper body instead of the legs during suspect apprehension, along with expanding the understanding of a person suspected of a serious offense to include virtually any Palestinian. Another violation is the use of lethal measures when less injurious ones could diffuse the threat, and illegal use of allegedly “non-lethal” measures such as rubber-coated metal bullets, sponge rounds and tear gas in a way that renders them lethal.
In using firearms in the Occupied Territories, Israel’s actions are also subject to the provisions of international humanitarian law (IHL). [...] The principle of distinction requires the parties to the conflict to direct their attacks only against persons taking part in the hostilities and against objects that are used for military purposes. To ensure that this distinction is respected, it is forbidden to mount an attack against an object that is not a specific military target, and to use weapons that do not allow sufficiently precise distinction between military and civilian objects. The principle of proportionality prohibits an attack even where the intended target is a legitimate object of attack, if the damage to the civilian population will be greater than the military advantage anticipated from the attack.
Israel claims to follow these rules. However, its open-fire policy during fighting, and particularly in massive incursions into Palestinian cities and rounds of fighting in the Gaza Strip, ignores these rules almost entirely. [...] For years, B'Tselem regularly wrote to the military law enforcement system in order to promote accountability for cases in which security forces harmed Palestinians. But, given the reality described here, in May 2016, we decided to stop contacting the MAG Corps to demand investigations. [...] This policy conveys Israel’s deep disregard for the lives of Palestinians and their property, and facilitates continued use of lethal force – a crucial element in Israel’s ability to maintain violent control over millions of Palestinians. ❞
