De situatie is al lange tijd onverteerbaar. Gaza is de dodelijkste oorlog voor journalisten sinds 1992, het jaar waarin het Committee to Protect Journalists begon de aantallen wereldwijd bij te houden. Israël houdt bovendien negentig journalisten gevangen. (...)
Met het zwart op de voorpagina en de website van vandaag benadrukt NRC, samen met talloze andere media wereldwijd en de organisatie Reporters sans Frontières, dat journalisten in Gaza veilig moeten kunnen werken. Daarnaast moeten internationale journalisten vrije toegang krijgen tot het gebied.
Media-organisaties hebben geen middelen om bescherming en toegang af te dwingen, wat deze oproep een machteloze indruk geeft. Die zou dan ook niet nodig moeten zijn. Een regering die het internationaal recht volgt heeft niets te verbergen en kan geen bezwaar aanvoeren tegen een vrije pers, laat staan dat zij journalisten mag doden. Netanyahu moet journalisten niet alleen beschermen, hij zou het uit overtuiging moeten doen.
