The reason they keep getting their way is that nobody challenges them in the slightest on basic factuality & practicality.

We lijken te leven in een tijd waarin voortdurend de randjes gezocht worden. De aanhoudende dreigementen van Trump, Israël-Gaza, Rusland-Oekraïne, NSC dat uit het demissionaire kabinet stapt, en of het dan nu echt gaat lukken om vrouwen met rust te laten op straat.
De afgelopen zomervakantie heeft het me bewust en onbewust veel bezig gehouden. Vooral hoe ik me ertoe verhoud. Kan ik – als ik heel hard mijn best doe – begrijpen en invoelen waarom een Trump zo te werk te gaat? Kan ik de ongelofelijke wederzijdse haat van de landen die in oorlog zijn met elkaar voorstellen. Zo zeer dat je op het punt komt dat dehumaniseert?
Meestal kwam ik niet verder dan het besef dat dat al deze actoren op een zeker moment hebben besloten het eigen narratief als de enige en absolute waarheid te beschouwen. Wetend ook wat de kracht van herhaling kan doen met een populatie. En zo wordt steeds een stapje verder gezet. ‘Kom ik hier ook mee weg?’ De rand weer iets verlegd.
En ik realiseerde me dat het steeds blijft neerkomen op het simpelweg zijn van de verandering die je wilt zien. Ofwel: vredelievendheid cultiveren, kwetsbaarheid aanmoedigen, behulpzaam en respectvol naar elkaar zijn. En ja, dat wordt je soms in het dagelijks leven in allerlei dagelijkse niet noemenswaardige situaties soms al lastig genoeg gemaakt. Zo blijkt mijn vredelievendheid toch heel ver te zoeken als iemand in het verkeer mij door zijn weggedrag in gevaar brengt.
Maar aan de start van dit nieuwe collegejaar, wil ik alle studenten en collega’s toch vooral aanmoedigen om de randjes op te zoeken. Met dit verschil: blijf in verbinding, reflecteer op je acties en sta open voor feedback en andere perspectieven. Precies waar het op globaal niveau zo vaak aan schort. Want aan en net buiten die randjes vind je inspiratie, groei, innovatie en wezenlijke inzichten. Daar is het spannend, daar wordt geschiedenis geschreven. Of het nu die van jouw persoonlijke ontwikkeling is of binnen een vakgebied.
Laatst hoorde ik het komiek John Cleese heel mooi uitleggen toen hij het over playfulness (speelsheid/nieuwsgierigheid) en creativiteit had. Dat ontstaat pas als alles een optie mag zijn. Als de randen (even) worden losgelaten en we niet meer oordelen en denken in termen van goed, fout of falen. Ik herken die momenten zelf als flow en ze horen bij de mooiste en gelukkigste momenten in mijn leven.

Met het zwart op de voorpagina en de website van vandaag benadrukt NRC, samen met talloze andere media wereldwijd en de organisatie Reporters sans Frontières, dat journalisten in Gaza veilig moeten kunnen werken. Daarnaast moeten internationale journalisten vrije toegang krijgen tot het gebied.
Media-organisaties hebben geen middelen om bescherming en toegang af te dwingen, wat deze oproep een machteloze indruk geeft. Die zou dan ook niet nodig moeten zijn. Een regering die het internationaal recht volgt heeft niets te verbergen en kan geen bezwaar aanvoeren tegen een vrije pers, laat staan dat zij journalisten mag doden.
