Meanwhile in Wales a simple experiment in encouraging the use of public transport among your people has started: a reduction in fares to £1 & the provision of a £3 all day pass....
While this leaves the issue of the availability of transport un-touched (timetables remain the same), it will be interesting to see whether a simple price reduction strategy can expand public transport use?
If it does, then England should take note!

Peter Navarro’s remarks accusing India of being a “laundromat for the Kremlin” and alleging “Brahmin profiteering” reveal more about the Western template of prejudice than India’s policy.
From racism in the U.S. to ignorance about the Sanatana philosophy, this is not a critique but propaganda. As we say in Bharat: “Khisiyāni billi khamba noche.”
India’s energy policy is national security, not Western approval.

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •If you _really_ want people to use the public transport system, make it tax funded, and make it free for everyone.
In addition to that, a page can be taken from the soviet play book and make public transportation (and the stations) an area where people actually want to be, rather than an area people try to avoid.
This will cost enormous amounts though, but if the politicians truly believe in the green agenda, price can not be an objection, since we're "saving the planet". ;)
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
Agreed; that is the end point logic of price reductions - an dot course if you strip out the ticketing, state budget oversight, profits etc., actually the costs would also come down even as usage went up.... but you are right the cost would still need to be clearly justified by both the social & environmental benefit(s) which would require our political class to actually advocate for a public good (which is not often at the forefront of their minds)
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •This is the truth! I think the modern politicians are doing a real disservice to environmentalism with their empty posturing. That only sends the signal that the environment is nothing to care about, since they do not care themselves, and, it also drags the "real" environmentalists down with the politicians.
At the same time, in the media, you almost never hear about win/win solutions for the environment. You only see the pattern "earth will die = more taxes to avoid" and
h4890
in reply to h4890 • • •that just makes me not care, since it is just such an obvious power grab and threat against privacy.
I think the only positive environmentalist I ever seen in the media the past 5 years is Björn Lomborg.
Naturally he is hated by the political class, since he does not spread doom and gloom, that can only be avoided by high taxes and increased government power. ;)
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
Yes, when I still subscribed to the Economist they used to give Lomborg quite a lot of space & while I didn't agree with everything he argued for he had a clear & logical position - drawing from a clear economic model - that respected. Don't see so much coverage of him nowadays (at least not in the areas I'm reading, although very occasionally he pops up in the FT)
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Putting on my conspiracy hat, I'd say the reason for that is that there is simply nothing to gain for politicians by letting him speak. At worst (for the politicians) he will help solving environmental problems without raising taxes, proving that what they are doing is just a power grab.
So much better to deny him any public speaking opportunities together with their friends, mainstream media, and continue the propagation of fear porn and "greta". ;)
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
yes, I agree; what is needed is a clearer inclusive debate on the 'do something' side - as I said I may not always agree with him, but his arguments should (in a dialectical sense) be utilised more widely to refine & hone our very necessary response(s)

In and around Brisbane, Queensland (Australia) ALL tickets to ALL destinations are 50c (25p).
Fully evolved public transport systems are free. When people decide to fund such services from the "public purse" the people always reap a net benefit.

In the Netherlands we have the opposite. Our national rail service keeps raising prices, they say that's needed because there are not enough people travelling by train. Next year they also plan ro reduce services in some places for the same reason. 😒
