In un periodo adolescenziale della mia vita fui folgorato sulla via del jazz rock (e non solo), termine non certamente ortodosso per la critica jazzistica. Fra i tanti musicisti e gruppi in auge in quegli anni, la Mahavishnu Orchestra di John McLaughlin nutriva la mia più sentita ammirazione. Se Miles Davis inventò il jazz rock sulle onde di “Bitches Brew”, furono i suoi discepoli a dargli ordine e regola, a cominciare da John McLaughlin, che con Hammer e Cobham fondò nel 1971 la Mahavishnu Orchestra. The Inner Mounting Flame è uno dei capolavori insieme a Birds of Fire (1973) di questo genere sonoro: il jazz rock. Some say it’s the greatest film of all time. What’s not up for debate—and what nearly everyone agrees on—is that it’s the most beautiful. Every frame could be hung on a wall. Every shot is a painting inside a frame.
It’s a story of infidelity, longing, and bitter secrets. But it’s also a time capsule of a Hong Kong that has since disappeared.
And yes, VCD doesn’t deliver the sharpest fidelity. But somehow, it feels like the truest way to experience this film.
