The answer to that is much more complicated. Basically education and structural democracy changes need to be made to not make us so vulnerable to the fucking idiots of this country (not to mention the people who love evil, sadism, power/control etc).
Ultimately, I think a culture of "greed is good" and neoliberalism plus letting the rich run rampant has eroded the moral capacity of a LOT of people. If you defeat that, change the culture, that will have widespread impact.
short term: MFers need to wise up and vote to throw out the fash
medium term: vast cultural change needs to happen and we can start on that by using power when we have it for change
long term: you only keep the democracy you deserve; you gotta be a populace that values truth and compassion and community and justice or you will get tyrants, especially as the climate crisis worsens
