Considering that data is basically being turned into a massively harmful substance we should do what we do with such things: Avoid amassing it as much as possible & when we do have to for some important reason, keep it sequestered, guarded & under strict safety measures.

In talking about “AI”, wouldn’t it make more sense to distinguish between at least two broad categories?
1. Large, centrally-run models that need data centers the size of Manhattan and their own nuclear power stations
2. small, specialized models run locally, optimized for specific fields and tasks
@neil That’s a wonderfully clear and thoughtful policy.
One use case I see at work is to use a chatbot-like function that allows our technical support staff to find information in the endless reams of manuals and documentation that are available internally. (This is for heavy machinery, not consumer doodads.)
Here the AI tooling supports a human who’s in charge of the process, and has significant domain knowledge.

The best way of judging a policy or legislative move, is not to ask how you are going to use it to solve a problem... but to ask how will your (political) opponents use it once they are in power?
(reflection prompted by the Q. of Digital ID, but of much wider importance).
Too often, especially when the political class is relatively socially homogenous, the notion a policy or law might be subsequently abused by the powerful seems low down on the list of politcal consideration(s).
