A pretty cool thing about the Fediverse:
It will still be around in a decade. Even two decades.
Usenet still exists. IRC still exists. Email still exists. When you build platforms on open protocols and standards, it doesn't actually matter what corporations try and do to enshittify it. So long as there are people who are still willing to run instances, and users who still want to talk to one another without going through some corporation's platform, it'll still be here.

Open-source 3D parts just leveled up.
Hunyuan3D-Part is Tencent’s open-source rival to commercial part-level 3D generators. It introduces native 3D segmentation and controllable part synthesis—no 2D SAM shortcuts—trained on a huge multi-shape corpus with clean part labels. Think precise part decomposition + generation with SOTA controllability and geometry fidelity.

Did you know there are two methods currently used to measure "poll error"?
They exist in a sort of unspoken truce. To date, no one knows (or cares) about the fact that they cannot, logically, both be correct. See below.
For a poll that says 40-25, compared to a result of 57.5-42.5, the Spread Method (used in US) would claim ZERO error
But the Proportional Method would claim a massive FOUR POINT ERROR
Which is correct?

The image depicts a group of soldiers in a barren, rocky landscape, likely on a military mission. In the foreground, four soldiers are standing, facing a large, futuristic vehicle with antennas and wheels. They are equipped with helmets, body armor, and backpacks, suggesting a high-tech military setting. The soldiers are holding rifles, indicating a readiness for action. In the background, a larger group of soldiers is gathered around the vehicle, which appears to be a spacecraft or a mobile base. The scene is monochromatic, emphasizing the starkness of the environment and the soldiers' gear. The overall atmosphere is one of anticipation and preparedness, with the soldiers focused on the vehicle and their mission ahead.

The problem currently is that the app isn't configured to allow alternative nodes and requires SMS.
I know @VeilidNetwork was working on building out a better encryption decentralized application platform, but since its release I've really not seen many folks utilize it.

in reply to Jess👾 • • •Yeah I kinda thought it was but wasn't sure.
Basically I think eventually someone is gonna come along and attack signal at the "installing the app" or "running the server/organization" points and then there will be the incentive to decentralize it seriously.

Sure, you could do periodic database backups to a torrent or something, but then it's out there more permanently.

in reply to Jess👾 • • •This is what we have been saying about Signal for years.
Furthermore, tying accounts to phone numbers is problematic to those who wish to maintain multiple identities (eg. out of queer folks' fear of outing themselves to coworkers, family, etc., while not wanting to chat under their dead identities) or simply don't have phone numbers at all; yes, folks without phones exist (just ask my coworker from my previous workplace).
"Just get a cheap SMS-only plan" Okay, so now Signal is a subscription service.
Stuff like Matrix and Delta Chat, yes they may run into bumps involving federation and server upkeep. But I am certain the devs work hard to ensure that secure and decentralized chat platforms exist and work to make them better.

in reply to Rin💖 (front) - Mari💙 (stby) • • •@rinmari
The *big* problem with telephone numbers, which will affect any service that uses them, is they do not belong to the enduser or even the telephone company.
There's a hard limit to how many every country can have, so they are treated as a public good and allocated by the Communications Ministry of the national government.
Which then understandably feels entitled to check what they are being used for (and can often justify this claiming they are preventing scams / crime / harrassment), so its best for any "secure" messenger not to be dependent on telephone numbers as a primary identifier..
Jess👾
in reply to Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK • • •I mean I do get it that they can cut down a pretty huge amount of spam simply by requiring an actual mobile phone that can receive an SMS to register an account, and that the legitimate users who are cut out by that are relatively small. For now. But when UK and EU effectively ban them for not backdooring their app, they would no longer be able to use those country's SMS networks to manage accounts.
@vfrmedia @rinmari
Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK
in reply to Jess👾 • • •@rinmari its also often non-trivial getting a telephone number that can receive SMS from a different country to your own - many EU nations outright forbid it without proof of national identity/company registration) even from customers in other EU nations (they can easily override any free trade agreements quoting "national security").
SIM cards are cheap and easy to get in UK, but increasingly require delivery or registration to a physical address and can still be traced by "following the money" (as providers don't give away services for free).
Apparently Signal is finally starting to become popular with drug dealers/users here, which is going to increase attempts to investigate it (feds don't even need to backdoor it if they can compromise someones device)

in reply to Jess👾 • • •True, but signal solves a huge class of problems for very many people.
That it doesn't solve all possible problems is not a valid criticism.
There will not ever be one software program to solve all problems. It's a false goal. Diversity and redundancy in approach also provides security in and of itself.
Part of the mechanism of dominant tech culture is the endless search for convenience and novelty. It keeps us from getting comfortable and doing well with old tested protocols and programs.

Way to miss the point...
The whole post was about how truly federated architecture has no central node and can't be shut down, thus will persist as long as there are people who want to use it.
The post was NOT saying that things that aren't federated are pointless.
