Time for a new thread. I have been wanting to look at something very different which would not normally be associated with me... but it will take some setting up, so it will come later. For now, I want to look at the amazing Viking Lander missions. After Apollo, Viking was the next giant leap. Flyby and orbiter missions are fine but a landing on another world is something special, and I still take joy in seeing a new landscape for the first time. So here we go...

You all know Viking but I hope I can show you some things that are not so well known. Let's start with landing site selection. The Viking Project Science Steering Group first met in February 1969. Think about that date - the only close-up images taken by then were from Mariner 4. The Viking Landing Site Working Group started in September 1970 - they now had Mariner 6 and 7 images. But so little was known about the planet - how could sites be chosen? We'll see tomorrow.

VIking landing sites had to be between 30 N and 30 S, and at low elevation (denser atmosphere for the parachute and maybe for biology). Topographic knowledge was rudimentary, most details had to wait for Mariner 9 imaging, but in early December 1970 the first list appeared from the landing site working group. This map shows these first sites. The base map is Mariner 6 and 7 images, the best available. Ellipses are 400 by 840 km across, huge by our standards today.

Elevations came from 6 spacecraft occultations (2 each, entry and exit, for 3 Mariners), Earth-based radar and carbon dioxide spectra. The names are 19th Century albedo feature names - Nix Olympica, snows of Olympus, is what we now call Olympus Mons. A, A2, A3 are Viking 1 sites, B1, B2, B2 are for Viking 2. Preferred sites were in Hellas and Thoth-Nepenthes (part of Isidis, we would call it now). The 2 landers had to be far apart so A2 + B3 or A1 + B1 could not both be selected.

It's hard to believe now how little was known about Mars when that first map was compiled. Mariner 9 changed that in 1971-72. Its job was to map the planet's features, and this is when the 'Wonderworld' was revealed - the volcanoes, canyons, channels etc. we know today. In April 1972 the landing site group revised the landing zone to 25 north to 25 south, and the Viking Data Analysis Team recommended extra imaging of potential landing sites, mapped here.

On it are mapped broad regions screened for Viking landing sites, and over 40 targets which looked interesting for landing. They became targets for extra imaging later in Mariner 9's mission, but not all of them could be imaged before the mission ended.

That map shows the USGS map quads which were screened for sites. Circles show targets for more imaging (especially high resolution frames), and some extra sites were added to the list (X symbols). Only the white targets could be imaged before the mission ended.

Images were not the only useful inputs to the process. Earth-based radar could probe the sub-Earth latitude showing surface elevation and roughness, but interpretation was difficult. What should we trust?

Incidentally - notice that base map. The north is blank - it was filled in later in the Mariner 9 mission. A USGS shaded relief map of the area shown here was published in Sky and Telescope, giving most people their first view of the planet's geological features. This came between Apollo 16 and 17, a great time to be a space enthusiast.

After Mariner 9 finished imaging Mars the Viking team began looking at real sites. Geomorphology was the key - they wanted signs of water so channels or sediments apparently deposited by water were preferred. There was no compositional data as we have now but elevation was better defined (a few areas in stereo imaging and Earth-based radar, elsewhere occultation data and carbon dioxide spectra helped. Each time the orbiter passed behind Mars its radio signal was cut off...

(that's an occultation) and elevation could be inferred. Spectra indicated how much CO2 was present, little at high elevations, more at low elevations. Earth radar only gave data at the sub-Earth latitude all around the planet, and each time Mars was close that was a different latitude so it took a long time to collect data over a large area. This map shows the landing areas they selected and specific sites they thought favourable.

Here are more detailed maps of those sites, using much smaller ellipses than in our first map. The navigators were more confident so the uncertainty was reduced. Ellipse 3 (top left... ignore the A, B etc, letters) - is close to the Pathfinder site used much later. It's at the mouth of a huge channel so might be a sedimentary plain. Two alternatives are shown as well. Site 5 (three options) may have channel sediments too. Others were less well understood.

Here are the remaining Viking sites, drawn on Mariner 9 maps to show what was available as this work was being done. At the top, the site 6 ellipses are not far from the Beagle 2 site and the 11a site is in the region where China's Zhurong rover operated in 2021. The other sites are sediments except 9 which is on lava flows. Not much was known about these sites and only Viking Orbiter images would show if they were safe or not. Note that none of these are at high latitudes.

The polar caps shrink and grow with the seasons. That change is in the carbon dioxide cap, not water ice which stays frozen, but the idea that the shrinking springtime cap released water was widespread. Nobel Prize-winning biologist Joshua Lederberg argued strongly for a high latitude landing because Viking was seeking life (not just 'habitable environments' that recent missions look for) and as we all know water means life. So high latitude sites were new targets.

This map shows high latitude sites looked at in 1972-73. A white line outlines a mantled area around the pole (seemingly covered with something which smoothed the surface). It might be easier to land on those smooth surfaces. The map also shows the preferred sites before Viking launched. Mission A was Viking 1, so A1 and A2 were its prime and backup sites (Chryse and Tritonis). Similarly for Mission B (Viking 2 - Cydonia and Alba). What about the 'C' sites?

The story with the C sites is that planners were still unsure about the safety of the sites, given Mariner 9's low image resolution. Earth-based radar identified three smooth places which could serve as backup sites if Viking images ruled out all of the other locations.C2 is close to Opportunity's location. A1 is near Pathfinder and A2 is close to Tianwen 1's landing site with the Zhurong rover. B1 is near the 'face on Mars' which was not yet known.

Here are the Viking sites in more detail, with some alternatives. Hal Masursky said that moving ellipses around on the map to find hazard-free locations was like playing ice hockey. Different sources gave different ellipse dimensions. The infamous 'face' is in Cydonia Colles south of the B1 ellipse and would not have been visible to the lander. It was found in Viking images taken to assess the site.

So Mariner 9 data produced four sites, prime and backup for each lander. But Viking had much better cameras and would have to certify them as safe. The very first pictures of the A1 site were fascinating... much too fascinating to be confident about landing. Here is Viking Orbiter 1 image 006A33 (the 33rd image taken by Viking Orbiter 1 on orbit 006) in the A1 ellipse. The resolution is 41m/pixel. Mariner 9's was 1 km/pixel for most areas, this looked featureless.

Choose a mission. You get a map which you can zoom into. An arrow tool lets you select images at any point for that mission. It takes a bit of effort to get into it, several choices to make, but there is a lot to see. Themis Visible, HiRISE and CTX are particularly good.

The Viking 1 orbiter was put to work imaging across Chryse looking for a smoother site. Earth-based radar suggested smoother surfaces to the northwest. This map shows imaged areas (white outlines, labelled with the orbit number, P = periapsis) and some candidate ellipses. Eventually the Beta ellipse was chosen for Viking 1. This comes from the minutes of the site selection group meetings.

This is the final ellipse plotted on a USGS map. The large cross shows the post-mission estimate of the landing location. The actual site was found later (by Tim Parker of JPL) in better Viking images late in the mission, then seen clearly in HiRISE images. I was looking too, following advice from Merton Davies of RAND, but he and I were both wrong. Now it's time to get down on the ground.

We are pretty good at landing on Mars now, but there was no guarantee that Viking 1 would be lucky. Carl Sagan said (as the spacecraft was approaching Mars) "We are fantastically ignorant of factors that could be fatal to a successful landing." Even with the Viking Orbiter images this was true. At 40 m/pixel not a single boulder could be seen in any image. And yet... they succeeded. Tim Mutch (Brown University) was the leader of the imaging team...

He couldn't bring himself to watch the landing in a crowd and found a quiet room to watch alone. The first image built up one column of pixels at a time in front of him. He wrote later: "Time and time again I repeat, "It's incredible." And it truly is. Nothing before or after can compare. It is transparent, brilliant, boundless. An explorer would understand. We have stood on the surface of Mars." This is that first image.

I work for a contact center software company. There are definitely some valid use cases for agentic ai and LLM's but most of the stuff being attributed to the latest wave of AI is stuff that's already been possible for a decade at least. The new tech open up a few good use cases but they are definitely incremental rather than revolutionary.

We have found it useful for summarizing interactions, doing evaluations on interactions that would have no evaluation otherwise, and highlighting and summarizing relevant passages in knowledge articles for people on interactions with customers and for customers themselves via the web. It does have value, just a small fraction of that which would be needed to justify the investment being made and the valuations it's getting.

That's not a revolutionary change, though. It's a useful tool sometimes, nobody denies it, but this financial speculation and forced deployment has meant that the biggest impact it's had is the ease with which one can spread disinformation and generate slop for monetization. Both of those have undergone a revolution as a result, that was my point.

This is why I think LLMs have made the world worse even if I don't buy the fear-mongering. Regardless of the costs to train LLMs, the costs of having those tools available are worse than the benefits. The amount of extra work bug bounty programs have had to do thanks to AI is crazy.

Come to think of it, there are black markets for selling computer security vulnerabilities between nation-states. Maybe our governments can start flooding those with AI generated security exploits. That'd be funny.

This was a really great read. The numbers don’t lie: 7 companies each independently invested 100 bn in AI and have seen little revenue in return (relatively speaking). When overlaying that on top of its impact on the us stock market as a whole, once the veil has been lifted that this is not leading to super intelligence, a bubble will burst and the entire economy will feel it.

That doesn't mean "nothing to see here, move on." It means that AI isn't the bow-wave of "impending superintelligence." Nor is it going to deliver "humanlike intelligence."
It's a grab-bag of useful (sometimes very useful) tools that can sometimes make workers' lives better, when workers get to decide how and when they're used.

This is the part that is overlooked when discussing anti-ai hype: these tools are very useful, but they appear only useful to the skilled laborer wielding them, instead of the investor claim that they will be replaced.

Russia made Antisemitism into a capital offence as their first action after the Jewish destruction of the Russian Empire, called the Russian revolution

Anti-Communism was also made into a Capital offence on the grounds of being antisemitic

Fascism in Italy and National Socialism in Germany developed at the same time to protect their Nations from what was done to Russia where millions were now executed.

Foreigners were banned from working with News, Movies and Theater.

Ein Savannenbussard (Buteogallus meridionalis) steht einbeinig auf einem Aststumpf. Er läßt die Flügel leicht hängen. Der Betrachter sieht ihn im Profil.
Der Savannenbussard ist ein eher schlanker, schlaksig wirkender Greifvogel. Der Kopf mit den stark nach vorne ausgerichteten Augen wirkt klein.
Kopf, Nacken und Hals sind warm zimtbraun; die feine dunkle Strichelung ist nur aus der Nähe zu erkennen. Wangen und Ohrdecken können einen gräulichen Ton aufweisen. Die düster kastanienbraune Grundfärbung des Rückens wird durch die zimtfarbene Randung der Deckfedern aufgehellt, die Schultern deutlich rostbraun. Zum Schwanzansatz wird die Färbung dunkler und weist eine weiße, feine Längsstrichelung auf. Bis auf den Hals ist die gesamte Unterseite auf variablem (zimtfarben, graubraun, auch sehr hellgrau) Grund fein dunkel gesperbert. Der verhältnismäßig lange Schwanz ist schwarz und zeigt eine deutliche weiße Medianbinde und ein feinen weißen Abschluß. Die Flügeldecken sind auf der Oberseite kastanienfarben und zimtfarben gesprenkelt; die Schwingen sind davon klar abgesetzt ungezeichnet zimtfarben. Die tief gefingerten Handschwingen sind schwarz, die Armschwingen sind auf Ober- und Unterseite schwarz gerandet. Fast ungezeichnet zimtfarben sind die Unterflügeldecken; sie setzen sich deutlich von den cremefarbenen, fein dunkel längslinierten Schwingen ab. Die langen gelben Laufbeine sind bis zum Intertarsalgelenk buschig rostbraun befiedert. Die Iris ist orange, die Wachshaut gelb.
