"[A] pending bill in Congress level aims to protect just one of the impacted groups — lawmakers — not just from data brokers but from reporters and activists as well. The bill, sponsored by Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Ted Cruz, does nothing for the rest of us except undermine our ability to hold lawmakers accountable. It would allow members of Congress to remove information about themselves from the internet altogether, regardless of whether data brokers are involved.
But even more strangely, the legislation falls short of its own goal of stopping data brokers, and therefore won’t make members of Congress safer. As a coalition of rights groups explained recently, the bill falls short of what we should expect from Congress, in terms of both efficacy and transparency.
The bill wouldn’t adequately protect lawmakers from data brokers because it wouldn’t apply to certain data brokers at all.
The bill specifically exempts any data broker covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a federal law governing the collection and use of consumer information, or the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act, a federal law that protects sensitive data held by financial institutions.
This loophole means that bad actors could still buy lawmakers’ private information from data brokers..."

Really good interview with Green MP Chloe Swarbrick, on Gary's Economics. She certainly understands (and can articulate) the inequality and regressive taxation problem we have here in NZ - and thinks it is one of our biggest problems, as I do. Can she get enough support in NZ to make some progress?

Rob and I do a detailed review of the - ‘two bottle of wine problem’ - NHSbuntu project which we built together back in 2017, relating how we used the great work already existing in the Linux and Open Source community to quickly put together a fully-functional, NHSmail-ready, stable, secure, legacy-app-friendly and low cost operating system for the NHS. The NHSbuntu/NHoS project began in early 2017, spurred by the need for a more secure, cost-effective, and flexible alternative to the NHS's heavily Microsoft-reliant IT infrastructure.7 The WannaCry cyber-attack in May 2017, which severely disrupted NHS services, highlighted the vulnerabilities the project aimed to solve, giving it a surge of public attention and support.8
In January 2018, the project was officially shut down.15 The developers, led by Dr. Baw, cited the constant legal threats and a lack of high-level support from key NHS bodies like NHS Digital as the reason for closing the project.
They felt they were being "used as leverage" in internal discussions about a new enterprise-wide agreement with Microsoft, and that despite interest from "grass-roots" IT staff, the higher echelons were not interested in backing an open-source alternative.16
The project remains an important case study in the challenges of introducing grassroots open-source initiatives into a large, politically sensitive, and highly bureaucratic public sector organization
