Durante un viaggio non pianificato in Danimarca esploro un supermercato locale mentre il mio compagno di viaggio è impegnato altrove a fare non so cosa.
Bello l'arredo tutto in legno, ma a colpire è l'atmosfera: la gente indugia a chiacchierare, senza la tipica fretta di chi vuole solo sbrigare la spesa il più velocemente possibile.
In particolare mi attaccano bottone due bambini in momenti diversi, ma entrambi sono appassionati di Star Trek e mi fanno domande varie. Io penso "ragazzo mio, è il tuo giorno fortunato" e faccio la loro gioia conversando fluentemente di storie e personaggi.
Ricordo anche di aver pensato "e bravi i genitori che gli fanno vedere roba buona".
C'è però anche un elemento di disturbo, perché un commesso a una certa si fa troppo vicino e mi allunga le mani addosso, proprio mentre sto nerdando con uno dei bambini!
Mi distraggo dalla conversazione giusto il tempo di falciarlo con gli occhi, spingerlo via e dirgli che "le tette non si toccano!".
In un'area del supermercato ci sono anche gadget della Formula 1, tipo action figure dei piloti e Lego giganti. Considero di comprarmi il Lego di Nico Hülkenberg perché un underdog fa sempre simpatia, anche quando guadagna milioni già di suo.
In un'altra area trovo invece un letto a disposizione dei clienti (!). Mi ci accomodo e sonnecchio finché non mi raggiunge finalmente il mio compagno di viaggio, che a questo punto acquista un volto definito ed è quello del mio compagno irl.
Andiamo alla cassa, paghiamo e poi ci avviamo alla nostra sistemazione per la notte: un ampio locale vuoto e non riscaldato a disposizione dei viaggiatori zaino in spalla come noi. Prepariamo i nostri giacigli, così come i numerosi altri ospiti, e penso "ah ok, riscaldamento a calore umano" e prego che basti a non patire il freddo notturno.
C'è un televisore appeso alla parete e, senza dire niente e non si sa nemmeno come, siamo noi a far partire un film. Nessuno si lamenta, c'è chi guarda con noi e chi si fa i fatti suoi.

He's right of course, political leadership has been replaced by briefing (and flying kites in the media) with little attempt to shift the dial of politics in the UK back in a more European social democratic direction...

I think what has infuriated #Labour’s core vote so much is that all it really hates are creatures you might put in a cauldron - bats, newts and toads.
Many would like to see taxes levied at the very rich, tech companies and polluting oil giants and windfall taxes remain on energy companies.
But instead things are worse with this government than when Lord Mandleson was ‘intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich’…because they don’t want to properly tax them.
This notion of perpetual growth that #Labour think they can summon up, is what they think will save them from having to have a confrontation with the very rich. It’s not only timid, it’s reckless and economically unsound.
But the #TechBros they seem delighted to hop into bed with…that’s just plain insanity. They think we cannot see what is happening in the US. Why would we want to create a digital utopia for authoritarianism to pick up and thrive on?

The question that keeps nagging at me is the amount of economic control that UK govts are currently allowed to exert, particularly with regard to any global economic levers that might be brought to bear on a govt that didn't toe an orthodox neoliberal line.
If Thatcher and Blair were responsible for effectively selling the UK to foreign capital, then what power does our govt have?
Its an interesting Q.; but my feeling is there is a difference between what we might call 'actual' room to manoeuvre & the constrained possibilities that are faced on UK Govt.s by their adherence to a line of logic that seeks to advantage financial services - once again its all about whose opinion hey give most credence to
Yes, I'm not suggesting that our current govt is anything but conventional in their economically-liberal and pro-City choices, but even if they weren't then how much control could they realistically wield in a global economy?
....I'm not making excuses for the govt so much as trying to understand what options an anti-neoliberal govt would have if one were elected.
Well, for all the ideology, bond traders are often pretty pragmatic, so my feeling is certainly than they would ideally like, but more than the orthodox consensus holds, but where on that continuum actual freedom to (political economically) manoeuvre is, is an issue for political leadership & subtle strategising which for the most part seem beyond out current political class

Some people I talk to look at me with suspicion, almost disgust, when I say I enjoy coming to the supplier's warehouse to pick up hardware and devices.
You see activity, life, people bustling about to make sure we can get everything we need.
And, to this day, they have always been incredibly kind and extremely helpful.
Sometimes, much of the real world is far from our monitors.
