Its clear, economics has an elitism problem in four (interacting) dimensions:
elite dominance: too many 'top economists' went to the same few universities;
editorial gatekeeping: key disciplinary journals are tightly controlled & submissions limited to those confirming the orthodoxy;
rising institutional concentration: the economics courses that feed the discipline are increasingly limited;
and the discipline has not escaped it Eurocentric foundations.

I really don't like the term meritocracy at all - coined as a critique, it has now become a social structure designator, and in the latter case misses so much of what is really going on I seldom if ever use the word
Also in Germany (or at least it used to be, when I was still occasionally visiting German universities)....
Sad to hear it. In Germany they at least have a derogatory term for when a professor is still at the desk where he wrote his PhD thesis: Hausberufung.
