Here is some literal new shiny.

Our SPARC tokamak's donut-shaped vacuum vessel will hold a superhot plasma, the machine's fusion fuel. Here's how we got the first half of that vessel to our HQ in Devens, Massachusetts. This was a design, engineering, fabrication, and transportation feat.

Wait what? Logged into Teams, and to enter an accepted Teams meeting I suddenly need to verify that I'm not a robot??

I may not have gotten to dance but at least I looked good 🤭 #selfie

Here's an alt-text description of the image:

The image is a close-up, slightly angled portrait of a person looking directly at the camera. They have long, wavy dark brown hair that frames their face and extends past their shoulders. The person is wearing a dark blue button-up shirt that is partially unbuttoned, revealing a black bralette underneath. They have a small nose ring and a delicate black choker necklace. The background shows blurred elements of what appears to be an interior space, including a dark wood table and a partial view of a window. There is no text present in the image.

Hey friends! What are some examples of very well-run open source organizations/foundations? What makes them good? Doesn't have to be a non-profit.

Share counterexamples if you must, but I'm primarily seeking positive sentiment

I don't know a ton about them but I find the concept of @nivenly really compelling as a co-op developing open source apps. They make @pachli mastodon client among other things. I am a fan of co-ops in case you couldn't tell from my instance 😀
in reply to Eliot Lash

@Eliot_L @nivenly @pachli thanks everybody for agreeing on what not to bring up and also all the interesting pointers 😀 PSF is one I am acquainted with personally, also personally, and have experienced and supported the decades long push for diversity and inclusion. Very happy it grew into today's defiant stance even when sizable money is on the line.

Imagine believing in Intelligent Design… and then buying damn nose spray because your main air ducts like to close the moment you get sick or lie down.

Damn, you are sick? Guess you don't need that much oxygen! Prepare for your mouth to dry out and become a desert as you sleep.

in reply to Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

I think the intelligent design argument stems from the belief that God didn't make mistakes when making us.
I could argue that he didn't, he just didn't make us all at once, and he's still not done.

Not that I place much weight on my belief in him, however much I happen to, but it's a fun thought experiment.

ah yes, the "this would be so much more tolerable with only a few small tweaks to the design of my meat computer" phase of being ill. I know it well and wish you well

#JBPritzker, gov of #Illinois, has urged the #Trump admin to suspend its #immigration crackdown in his state from Friday to Sunday, to allow #children to “spend #Halloween weekend without #fear”.

In a letter addressed to #DHS Secy, #KristiNoem [dog killer], & the heads of #ICE & #CBP, Pritzker said federal agents were “ignoring their duty to protect the public & uphold the #constitution”…

Democrat #JBPritzker said such raids had “endangered the lives of innocent community members & #traumatized #children”.

Pritzker’s letter, which was obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times & Politico, came as a federal appeals court blocked an order which would have required a senior border patrol official to give daily briefings to a judge about #immigration sweeps in #Chicago.

@MakersHour Q1 Tell us a bit about yourself, an unusual creative fact or event in life maybe?

The name my parents chose for me can neither be spelt nor pronounced correctly by them. (Happens if you choose a foreign name and don't speak the language). I have two birthdays, one actual and one when I should have been born, they're almost 3 months apart. If you misspell my surname I have a famous artist for a name sake. I used to have an own pen for each writing project.

Crumbs, that is awkward.

I remember a contestant on a tv quiz show in the 80s who had to explain her name.
Her mum chose it but her dad, when he went to register it, didn't know how to spell it.
So she became 'Melony'.

It was something like that with my parents, too. My mother doesn't even get the first syllable right and couldn't care less.

I'm one of the few people who have to show their passport to their own mother.

Q1: @MakersHour
Tell us a bit about yourself, an unusual creative fact or event in life maybe?

A1: Hello, I am Alfred, maker, carer, caretaker, and miniaturist story teller.
When I was about 7 years old I ‘borrowed’ some aluminium sheet from Dad’s work stash. I did my first bit of metal cutting and panel beating to make a knight’s armour gauntlet because I had seen one in a book. It was fitted around a rubber washing up glove and included all the movable joints hinged on copper wire ‘rivets’. I wore it to school, and the teachers took it off me until home time as I wasn’t allowed to play with it during the breaks. While wearing it, I could play at having a robot hand.

Tonight’s soundtrack is: The Essential Status Quo – Volume 3.

A1 #makershour hi Ropey here. I'm fascinated by anatomical art and I love working with fabrics because of the different textures. Ropes, strings and threads are very important to me. Even the linguistics of it all. Unusual?... Well I'm currently carving a swede (which is why im late) and it's REALLY TOUGH.

Here's a description of the image:

The image depicts a group of five figures standing beside a large, boxy, pink vehicle on a rocky, wet landscape. The sky is overcast and gray, creating a subdued and slightly desolate atmosphere. The vehicle appears to be some sort of transport or cargo carrier, with a utilitarian design and visible panels and access points. The figures are all wearing similar bulky, gray suits with backpacks, suggesting they might be explorers or workers. Visible on the side of the vehicle in white lettering are the words "LSE" and "Militaria".
