Molly Burke's new memoir is out and, while I haven't read it, I will. Can't wait to see the blind community show their internalized ableism as they say this book should be tossed into the fire. hoopladigital.com/ebook/unseen… #Disability #Memoir
in reply to James Dean

@GamingWithEars She has pointed out how much she relies on her mom and others in the past. This is honestly the biggest reasons for the hate. It seems her skills need work, and the sighted community can get a fake perception of us from her. Some of us bust our asses off then to be compared to her is beyond frustrating. Some of us make our own success but will never have her privlege or opportunities sadly.
in reply to Keri Svendsen

@sapphireangel @GamingWithEars I'm very close to my family as well and after losing my job, yes, I'm relying on them as well.
I was asked the other day why I reply on my family so much and the answer is Who else would I reply on.
Other blind people? fair weather friends?
This might sound a bit harsh but the one thing I've seen in the western culture is that most people have a bad relationship with their families and while I don't think being very close to your family is all well and good and it does have it's downsides, most families that reply on each other will never leave each other in the cold.
I live far from my parents but yet I know I can make mistakes.
I know that I always have a home to go back to should something happen and My family is where they are because of hard work and sticking together even when times were hard.
So all this hate just comes from people who wish they had the same thing.
And at the end of the day, all I can do is have empathy for them.
in reply to Krishna Jariwala

I’ve noticed that western culture really doesn’t like community. Over here in the US, we tend to love individualism. So if someone could save money for example by moving in with their mom, that seen as a negative thing for some reason

in reply to Krishna Jariwala

@krishnajariwala @GamingWithEars I think there is a difference in relying on family when you need to, and having very little to no skills because you rely too much.
in reply to Keri Svendsen

@sapphireangel @krishnajariwala Well saying she has little to no skills is an assumption and nobody can say that with certainty without personally being around her for a period of time. Also, you do have to have good mobility skills to get a Guide Dog, of which she has now had four, so I don't think it's a valid assumption and we really should quit making those but we humans gonna keep humaning.
in reply to James Dean

@GamingWithEars @sapphireangel man, that's so true!
If you take a look at the people who are saying that she depends on her family to much are the same people that wish they were doing better in life.
Correct me if I'm wrong here but for someone who according to people, depends on her family to much, she's doing pretty well for herself.
She's also just moved in with her boyfriend so I don't know about you but if depending on my family a little more empowers me to have a better life such as that, I think we can all use this as food for thought.
in reply to Krishna Jariwala

@krishnajariwala @sapphireangel Yes, actually I think she's been moved in with him for a year or close to it by now. She posted a video around the time that she did. She has also lived on her own before.
in reply to James Dean

@GamingWithEars @krishnajariwala @sapphireangel I started reading her memoir, and ironically, her memoir actually answers at least 99.9% of these critiques without even trying to. You get to see a lot of things including, where she came from, which was not with a silver spoon in her mouth. She talks about losing jobs to ableism and more I haven’t read the whole thing yet, but at least check it out of the library. If you really hate her that much, checking it out of the library won’t be giving her any income of yours

It is so annoying that most news sites and many open source projects leaving X (Twitter) are moving to BSky instead of Mastodon 😒

@stefano how big is bsd.cafe's storage?

in reply to God Emperor of Mastodon

the media storage is around 130 GB, at the moment. I'm not at the computer now, otherwise I could tell you more about the size of the other parts
in reply to Stefano Marinelli

this seems... small? I was expecting north of TB. But this is good news.

Btw, have you documented publicly the design of bsd.cafe servers? Most people would simply attach aws s3.

in reply to God Emperor of Mastodon

only some details in the wiki, and a blog post on how to install mastodon (but it's a basic guide, not dividing in jails, etc)
Maybe I could post about how to use Mastodon with your own S3 storage (using SeaweedFS at the moment)
in reply to God Emperor of Mastodon

it does. I'm keeping in sync those media with a local Raspberry Pi 4, connected via VPN. Almost in real time.
I also have the ZFS backups of the entire dataset.
in reply to God Emperor of Mastodon

we have great technology, well hidden under all the commercial noise.
Having those media synced here also means I'm not downloading them from the original server, when using Mastodon. Which would be fine, but hey....this way is more fascinating 😂

DoD strips job protections from civilian employees, directs managers to fire with ‘speed and conviction’

The Defense Department is stripping away job protections from its civilian employees and directing managers to “act with speed and conviction” to fire employees performing “unsuccessfully.”

A new Sept. 30 memo titled “Separation of Employees with Unacceptable Performance,” which became public Tuesday, also warned that managers will be held accountable if they fail to remove poor performers.

Pentagon’s Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Anthony Tata, who signed the memo, suspended the department’s requirement that managers attempt to rehabilitate underperforming employees — clearing the way for supervisors to fire workers whose performance is deemed “unacceptable” more quickly.

“They are trying to cloak it in legalistic language and make it sound legitimate, but the reality is they’re stripping due process significantly and making it easier for arbitrary terminations, similar and functional to private sector employment,” Sean Timmons, managing partner at Tully Rinckey PLLC, told Federal News Network.

@MakersHour Q5 I collect stuff that could be making related (winches). What do you get carried away with collecting?

Schoolbags. If it wasn't for me and some others having such an extensive knowledge and an enthusiasm to collect we would have never been able to set up the schoolbag museum.

SO many people come find us because they miss their old bags.

Don't get me started or I'll still be talking tomorrow.

The bags in this 1987 commercial are what we're talking about: youtube.com/watch?v=M17WLYlku_…

in reply to MakersHourQuestions

school bags! Crumbs I loved buying new bags for school! I always managed to justify shy I needed a different bag and why a specific one was particularly important. They weren't expensive bags but even now too many bags. All work or utility. I don't do girly bags... but I need to carry meds and crochet and writing equipment and maybe a book and always my pterodactyl Swoop and his little buddy Cricket
in reply to MakersHourQuestions

It is! I could publish volumes with the stories people have told us about their bags. Our particular generation could grow very attached and especially the Scout bags (from the commercial) could really shape your identity and who was friend (fellow Scout kids of course) or foe (that lot with the [insert f-word here] Amigo bags). The phenomenon was even called the Scout vs. Amigo Wars in the media.

I myself got in the crossfire when I (Scout girl) made friends with Dani (Amigo girl).

The beauty of making a nix-only software is that you don't have to deal with ever-changing GitHub Actions, yaml, CI tests, etc.

If someone wants to use it - they will add the software as a flake input. If many people want, it might even get packaged in nixpkgs
