I hate that Google is locking down app distribution, but the argument that you should be allowed to put "whatever software you want" on your computing device does not apply to letting other unaffiliated organizations automate the distribution of user-submitted applications.
Think "downloading a build from the project's GitHub repo" VS "running 'npm install' to get builds of things from a company trying to profit from gamifying random people distributing other people's work."

We could absolutely have the good without the bad here, but the company who makes the operating system makes so much money from the bad option that they really, really want to prevent other organizations from doing so as well. To the point that they're willing to make actual sideloading extremely distasteful in order to do so.

It's all about externalities being paid for by those who cause them.
"Efficiency" layoffs are a feature, not a bug. If you can still achieve the same results with 10% less staff, that's typically rewarded in a capitalist environment.
The irony here is that these are most certainly layoffs in anticipation of an economic downturn, masked as "efficiency" layoffs with AI as the magic efficiency provider.
