It looks like the Govt.'s strategy to reduce violence against women & girls will focus not just on victims & perpetrators but also on supporting attempts to shift attitudes among young (school age) males (not least of all due to the rising abuse in teenage relationships).
While some of this may take the form of support for parents, its not yet clear how such interventions will work (or whether they *will* work).
But at least the focus looks right!

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •The government continues to kick young males in the teeth. Guilty until proven innocent is the only interpretation one can make.
This will also serve to increase the resentment among males against the government and against women.
I would personally refuse _any_ "education" or programs that has as its starting point that I'm violent against women. That is an insult.
The only way to do this without kicking the men who are down already, is to help the ones who have been convicted by "training" them, or by imprisoning them, and leave the rest of the male population in peace.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
The problem there is that is a reactive strategy that only deals with the violence after the fact; for many the issue is prevention - what will be interesting is to see what form such prevention takes; as you say it could just end up demonising young men, which would not be helpful, but if it was supportive that might be different.
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Prevention is inherently troublesome. It is currently used to build out the surveillance state, all in the name of prevention.
The only sound and ethical way to do this, is to inform people about sound values, regardless of gender.
Let's say schools had to teach some kind of "social orientation". Students, regardless of gender and color, will there be taught that violence is wrong.
I would have no complaints about that.
It is the unethical and one-sided argumentation that only men are to blame, and that (implied) only men can commit crimes that drives polarization.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
Hmmm.... well, I'm not sure in violence against women, blaming the victim works too well either - but yes I would agree, a general focus on why violence is wrong would be a good approach. The problem with underplaying prevention is your putting the cost of 'freedom' onto the victims & in the UK female victims are pretty badly served already by the justice system (which is also an argument for better responsive systems too, I accept)
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •I disagree. I put the cost on the criminal and the police. If the court administered severe and crushing penalties on violence, and imprisoned criminals for a long time, the phenomenon would quickly become less and less common.
Another completely ethical way, could be to teach self-defense to everyone who is interested.
A third way could be to distribute SOS alarms, to everyone, cost free.
So the main problem here, is the state. The state is failing its obligation, and since it has the monopoly on violence, and taxes, it can never have any right to cease that and put the burden on men, or women.
It is responsible, and it has failed. This is of course no news to libertarians, but for more state-positive people, it must be admitted as a small chink in the armor of the argumentation that the state is what solves these types of problems. At least based on how it has been done in the UK up until now.
Com to think of it... another libertarian solution is to make guns legal for self defense, and to implement concealed carry. This also has a very calming effect on criminals, since all of a sudden, they risk death, and not just "nothing" and tumbleweed from the state.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
sadly, the UK data show pretty clearly that in terms of inter-personal violence within existing relationships (which is where much violence against women takes place) sentencing as a disincentive/deterrent has at best only marginal impact.... which is why here the focus is shifting to prevention.
However, we agree on the over-arching responsibility lying with the state, where we differ, I guess would be how the state exercises that responsibility (or doesn't)
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Ahh, but I think you misunderstood me here. If the wife beaters are jailed for a year or more, eventually, the wife beaters will be gone and the women will be unbeaten. If your wife beating neighbour gets 5 years in prison, you will for sure think before you beat your own wife.
As a more extreme version of this, and the results, look no further than El Salvador. They throw criminals into prison for a long time, and as a result they have reduced gun death with 90% in a few years. This is a proven method.
If you're a wife beater, go to prison for 5 years, and I will promise you that there will be less wife beaters in the UK.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
But only after the wives have been beaten... and this suggests that the violence is part of a rational calculation; the problem is it seldom is by the time it gets tho that post.... hence the interests in an earlier intervention to shape potential aggressors normative position & practice
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •But that intervention is impossible except through indoctrination, and 24/7 surveillance. Crimes happen, that's a fact of life, and can never be used to justify 24/7 and authoritarianism.
Some wives will be beaten, but if, over time, the men are jailed for a long time, then over time, the problem will be solved.
If wives also are allowed guns and to defend themselves, violent men might be shot as well, further reducing the nr of criminals. So with long jail terms, self defense, and guns, I think the problem would go away in a few years time.
Add to that, learning about laws and how to behave at home and at school, and I think we've done the best we can, while respecting people right to privacy, and not singling out one gender as being evil.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
But I think your last paragraph is exactly what will end up being deployed... in a more direct way than currently.
