Times were different then - no TV, state control of both radio and newsprint. My late dad (German Jew who survived) said no-one knew what was going on. Many Jewish people were strong supporters of Hilter. Hitler was already a totalitarian dictator by 1933. The Night of the Long Knives and Oath of Allegiance meant the army swore an oath of "unconditional obedience" to Hitler. The people could not do anything as it just crept up on them.

The Trumpists may still kill many million people for their project of turning the USA into the American Reich, but they will never gain full control in the way the Nazis did in the 1930s.
