RE: mamot.fr/@pluralistic/11613098…

Policy in market capitalism is a matter of governance, not optimization or engineering which is how economists have been treating it.

The fact that Amazon's monopoly lets it control prices across the economy highlights the futility of trying to fix the Amazon problem by shopping elsewhere. A "boycott" isn't you *shopping really hard*, it's an organized movement with articulated demands, a theory of change, and a backbone of solidarity. "Conscious consumption" is a dead-end:

Anyone have recommendations for a web based accounting program, suitable for small business, that can be self-hosted?

On a related note... I would never recommend someone with a small business to do their own accounting unless they enjoy it. It is boring, doesn't add anything to the company, and unless it is too expensive, the _perfect_ task to pay someone for.

If you pay a company, they sometimes also have insurance and assume liability for errors, but not always, so caveat emptor.

Yes, I will be paying someone to do accounting. My old accountant is retiring and just switching to someone new.

I met with her this morning.

"Border Patrol agents left a partially blind refugee who spoke little English in the parking lot of a Buffalo coffee shop the night of Feb. 19 shortly before the man disappeared, according to security camera footage reviewed by The Washington Post. He was found dead five days later.

Nurul Amin Shah Alam, 56, was found dead Tuesday evening near an arena in downtown Buffalo, about five miles from where the federal agents had dropped him off after they picked him up from the county jail.

Relatives had spent days searching for Shah Alam, whom they described as in poor health. The circumstances surrounding the Rohingya refugee’s death prompted an outcry from Democratic officials, who called for further investigation.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents “released a blind father from custody and left him to find his way home alone,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said Thursday. “He never made it. New Yorkers deserve answers and accountability.”

Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan said Wednesday that Shah Alam’s death was “preventable” and “deeply disturbing.” The decision by CBP personnel to leave Shah Alam alone was “a dereliction of duty,” Ryan said."

If the rank and file in most nations in the region are cheering when Iranian missiles get through, that war is going to get just a wee bit bigger
in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Yes, I think so too. And I've seen a few vids with people cheering with Iran's bombs hit. I'll admit to being a bit surprised.

As of 2026-03-02, the state of the art in quantum decryption has cracked a:

  • 22-bit RSA key
  • 6-bit elliptic curve key

forklog.com/en/quantum-compute…

The IBM QC that cracked the 6-bit key uses 133 qubits.

Some new research suggests that RSA-2048 could be cracked with as "few" as 100,000 qubits.

newscientist.com/article/25164…

(Paywall-free)

Such a machine...is not feasible to build any time soon.

So when your CISO or a vendor starts going off about "post-quantum" security, feel free to use this to remind them that we still have SMB1 in some places and Telnet in others. Plenty of work to do around the house.

Somehow this window distorted full moon has a slice of lime, I didn't do anything to the photo except mildly curse the phone camera. But it's beautiful in the east in western Oregon, outside of the phone camera.

Maybe it's having a lime beverage before the sun goes down.

New Worlds vol. 8, no. 24 (June 1954)

This is pretty unusual, simply because it shows a naked, ugly foot. Do people have feet in science fiction? It's like that time when they showed X-wings over water, or lightsabres in a forest. Surely they do but it doesn't come up.

I know FCC regulation isn’t the sexiest topic in the world but I need y’all to watch this because we are on the cusp of having official state media controlled solely by Donald Trump and corporate media is ignoring it. This is how autocracy comes to power. youtube.com/shorts/Z8FwoNt9vxk…

So many questions. 1) How long has Nicole Kidman been around? 2) Why does the gorilla look so apologetic? 3) Why “whispering”? 4) What are those army guys doing? It's possible he's on some kind of field radio calling for backup but it's also possile he's just like "WTF?"
