It's not your imagination: the internet suuuucks now. The good news is: we are not prisoners to the depraved foolishness of early 21st century policymakers.
You cannot vote with your wallet. Or rather, you *can*, but you will lose that vote. Wallet-votes always go to the people with the thickest wallets, and statistically, that is not you.

Cory Doctorow sells his new novel, Sherrilyn Kenyon re-ups at St. Martin’s, HMH explores the life of Alma Mahler, and more in this week's notable book deals.
My latest novel is "Picks and Shovels," a historical technothriller set in the Weird Era of the PC, about Ponzi schemes, techbros, and the dawn of enshittification:
My next nonfiction book is "Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It," out from MCD/Farrar, Straus and Giroux on October 7:
My ebooks and audiobooks (from Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, Beacon, Verso and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

oh wow with Lina Khan in Brooklyn - that should be a fantastic conversation, perhaps aggravating af but here we are - wish I could be there. Will the library stream that?
It's very much an and/and rather than either/or for me. Seek systemic change, but at the same time minimize the power you give to your adversaries. Every $ I don't give to Amazon is a $ they can't use against us. And if I give it to a local bookstore instead, it'll help keep them alive until after the revolution.
But completely agree this is about power, and depends on what power you have. Not about morality and using it as a stick to beat other 'less virtuous' people with.
Reminds me of something: > These ideas need billionaire funding because, in themselves, the're an invitation to do nothing. "Vote with your wallet" isn't inspiring in itself, and it only gets worse when you understand that it's being bankrolled by people, whose wallets are many thousands if not millions times thicker than the average ones.
