I'm only a few chapters into Bill McKibben's stupendous new book *Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization* and I already know it's going to change my outlook forever:

Not the noise pollution from boats, re Douglas Adams at the Yangtze river w/o a hydrophone.

Let me get this firmly crooked. We steam reform natural gas to get hydrogen (for NH3), throwing away heat (and CO2). Use petroleum to transport and process other materials, such as pesticides and herbicides, to grow corn. We boil the corn into a mash (throwing more heat away). Ferment it releasing carbon dioxide. Reboil & condense the alcohols off of it to probably be chemically dehydrated so it doesn't separate in the tank. This is supposed to be _good_ for the environment?

@DavidReed Well, it gets a bunch of energy added to the system by the crane that puts several tons of rocks in its hopper when it gets to the top of the hill. I was just making a little joke.
in reply to Cory Doctorow

Maybe that explanation would have distracted from the point of the essay, but it is super interesting. Did not occur to me that the truck could be a no-energy-added system, even if not perpetual motion.

The one thing I find problematic is from the blurb: »if we can keep accelerating the pace« — the problem here is, we can't, in the needed scale. Fortunately, there is a proven alternative to complement it.

imwo currently solar is much better than throwing money at a hole in the ground. Which is better than chasing the philosopher's stone. Fission is much worse and fusion is a pipe dream with almost all of fission's problems and more sticker shock.

On a related note, recently thanks to wind power, Alberta (Canada's Texas) has had "free power".

pipelineonline.ca/alberta-had-…

The wind was so strong and steady that wind turbines supplied all the energy needed. The entire province's electricity demands could be met by power producers who were willing to accept $0 for the power they put on the grid. (The article explains how that can happen.)

This is despite Alberta having a right-wing government that abruptly stopped approving renewable projects in 2023.

If we can get to a point where energy is cheap, and sometimes even free, it could have huge consequences.
