I apologize for making this off-topic comment, but I'd like to share my thoughts on long threads in general. I'm sorry for taking your time, @pluralistic. I don't know if there's a particular advantage to limiting the length of posts to 500 characters, except to make it more similar to Twitter. However, I find that shorter posts are less practical for screen readers, and at least for me, they're much more difficult to read than longer messages.

As I listen to your posts in a linear fashion, I always get the information about your name and the timestamp, which I could deactivate by default, but that would make it impossible for me to understand if someone else is commenting or if the original author is still writing. So, I prefer to have some overhead information, but having to hear your name every 500 characters makes it relatively more fatiguing and repetitive to read.

I'm sure there are people who find threads preferable, but I just wanted to let you know my experience. I understand that some users may prefer shorter posts, but as someone who relies on screen readers, I find that longer posts are easier to follow and understand.

Additionally, I'd like to mention that it's very easy to change the maximum character number on your Mastodon instance. That's why I included @LaQuadrature, as the owner of the instance, who may be able to change the character limit in just a few minutes.
(For those interested in customizing their Mastodon instance, I'd like to share a helpful resource: write.as/sweetmeat/customize-m… This guide provides a step-by-step tutorial on how to change the post character limit, which can be useful for instance administrators who want to give their users more flexibility in their posting.)

I hope this message isn't bothering you, and I appreciate your time. Thank you for your great work, and I look forward to continuing to follow your posts. I just thought it was worth sharing my perspective as a user who relies on screen readers, and I hope it can be taken into consideration when deciding on post length limits.

Thank you so much for the article, and especially for providing a link to your blog. I really appreciate the effort you put into sharing with the community. What I really love about Mastodon is that it allows me to discover interesting writers like you, who share unique perspectives and insights that I might not have come across otherwise.

I also wanted to apologize if my previous comment felt like a criticism or a negative remark. That was not my intention at all. I simply wanted to share my personal experience, without meaning to generalize or criticize your approach.

I am grateful for the link to your article, which was incredibly helpful to me. It made me discover the function of using lists in a new way.

I think that's one of the things I love most about Mastodon - the ability to connect with others, share ideas, and learn from each other's experiences.
I'm looking forward to reading more of your posts and learning from your insights.

@debby Thanks! No offense taken - I'm sorry that the least-worst way of threading (which is by no means a good way of doing it!) is incompatible with screen-readers.

im fairly certain that chumby was a barcamp san diego sponsor one year too, and that was another amazingly dumb stumble on my part to not invest in that relationship

@APTiger @LaQuadrature Merci pour l'info ! Je vois que vous avez trouvé une façon plus facile pour gérer la longueur des messages. C'est très utile !
