“workers won't show up if they don't get paid, and customers won't buy things that cost everything they have…Unless, of course, you are an academic publisher, in which case this is just how you do business.” @pluralistic
Amen. I don’t mind that my work as author, peer reviewer and Associate Editor for journals is pro-bono, but do mind that publishing companies charge exorbitant prices that restrict access to what we make for free. I’m shifting my work to open access journals. #PeerReview

@DavidReed
Friends don't let friends donate their labor to the profit margins of Elsevier or Windawi (aka Wiley), or, I would say, Springer; and I include the historically respected journals that those brands either acquired or currently manage.
Or, of course, the various bottom feeders.
I explain this to the editors as needed

I haven't come as far along as you, just part of the way.

@glc @DavidReed If only vocational awe could be used to burn scummy publishers, not their voluntolds.

It would probably require that everyone "optimized" by the publisher go build a better alternative or strike.

Getting the law lemurs in sundry legislative bodies to serve the masses' best interests and not the billionaire buddies would be nice too.
