Valuable commentary about Trump's decision to bomb Iran continues to unfold. With this posting, I'm going to begin a new thread of commentary on this topic, since the previous one had gotten long.

In a statement entitled "Bombing God's Love," Brian Kaylor calls on Bob Dylan as a witness that

"Dropping bombs on people doesn’t count as loving God."

Though Trump invoked the name of God several times after annoucing he had bombed Iran….

Oliver Markus Malloy also invokes the bible — but to characterize Putin, Trump, Netanyahu, and Musk as the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

And that sounds about right to me.

"Today we are at war, because we never learn.

Trump involving our troops in yet another Mideast War is the most Republican thing ever. The blood-thirsty GOP and the presidents they choose, have a sickening fixation with the Mideast, and mostly all that oil, and don’t care how many lives — Americans or otherwise — they have to incinerate to get it."

"Let’s not allow the typical reflexive impulse to stand with a president in times of war cloud our thinking now. This reckless behavior is just the latest effort of an immunized despot to follow his whims, consolidate power and feed his fragile ego."

Characterizing her uncle as "the worst person at the worst time," Trump's niece Mary Trump advises us not to look for deep or rational motives in Trump's decision to attack Iran. It's about his fragile ego:

"He is driven by the most primitive impulses that center almost solely around protecting his fragile ego from humiliation (about which he has a pathological terror) and himself from the reality that he is a complete fraud."

"Jewish tradition, like most other moral traditions, has some version of the idea of 'what goes around comes around.' In Hebrew, it’s, 'midah k'neged midah.' And you are creating a world in which these things will be more normalized, and sooner or later they're not just done to nameless, faceless Iranians who you don't know anything about and don't care about, but they get done to you, and that's the world that you're creating."

"Trump has no strategy. Not in Iran, and not anywhere else. ...

His primary motive is to make sure that, in any given encounter, he is 'winning.' This is the philosophy that determines his policy on Russia, on tariffs, on Harvard, or on deportations: not what’s good for America, but what’s good for Trump."

"The Iranians have already declared that they will close the Straits of Hormuz, through which a quarter of the world’s oil flows. Gas prices will skyrocket, just to start. The risk of jihadist terrorism has been massively increased, while Trump has dismantled many of the government’s protections against sabotage, cyberattacks and terrorism, or put people like this 22-year-old lawn mower [Thomas Fugate] in charge."

"The strikes mark the U.S.’s official direct entry into the war, though the U.S. has provided Israel with support in its bombings on Iran and has also helped provide defense for Israel. The attacks come after politicians and war mongers in the U.S. have called for war with Iran for decades."

"Trump, the isolationist president who vowed to avoid foreign wars, has walked slap bang into a trap prepared by Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu – a trap his smarter predecessors avoided. Netanyahu has constantly exaggerated the immediacy of the Iranian nuclear threat. His alarmist speeches on this subject go back 30 years."

"Once again, the US has gone to war in the Middle East on the back of a lie, on disputed, probably faulty intelligence purposefully distorted for political reasons. Once again, as in Iraq in 2003, the overall objectives of the war are unclear, uncertain and open to interpretation by friend and foe alike. Once again, there appears to be no 'exit strategy', no guardrails against escalation and no plan for what happens next."

"Netanyahu has practically made a career out of warning that Iran is years (or months) away from developing nukes. Over the past 30 years, he regularly issued some variation on this threat – and often wildly overestimated how close Iran was to having a bomb. …

And the people of the Middle East will pay the highest price for yet another reckless war built on a lie."

"In rejecting diplomacy and choosing war, not only in breach of international law but at the behest of a country pursuing annihilation in Gaza, the US has delivered a resounding blow to the architecture of global affairs. It has signalled that countries that negotiate (Iran) face stark consequences, which those which rush to own the bomb (North Korea) can avoid."
