Benvenuta Social Web Foundation
Il lancio della social web foundation è un passo entusiasmante per sviluppare ulteriormente il fediverso – in un momento in cui sembrava che si stesse fermando!
È stata lanciata la Social Web Foundation. Questa organizzazione no-profit si occupa di creare connessioni tra le piattaforme sociali con ActivityPub ed è stata co-fondata da da Evan Prodromou (uno dei creatori di activitypub @evan@cosocial.ca), Mallory Knodel (@ohmallory@socialwebfoundation.org) e Tom Coates (@tomcoates@me.dm).
L'obiettivo della fondazione è quello di educare il pubblico e i politici sul social web, migliorare ed estendere il protocollo ActivityPub e costruire strumenti per rendere il social web più facile da usare. “Con questo programma, la Social Web Foundation può catalizzare una maggiore crescita del Fediverso, migliorando al contempo l'esperienza e la sicurezza degli utenti”, afferma Prodromou. “Il nostro obiettivo è sbloccare gli utenti, gli sviluppatori e le comunità in modo che possano ottenere il massimo dalla loro esperienza nel social web”.
Sono passati quasi sei anni da quando abbiamo lanciato la nostra istanza mastodon.uno, che ora conta oltre 73.000 utenti registrati. Abbiamo iniziato perché ci piace l'idea di un social network distribuito basato su standard aperti, senza proprietari, senza capitalismo di sorveglianza e senza tracciamento o profilazione degli utenti.
Ci siamo uniti al Fediverso per la prima volta nel 2019, come la prima associazione che permetteva di pubblicare su un microblogging (Mastodon.uno), foto (pixelfed.uno), video (Peertube.uno) e pubblicazione messaggi long-form che implementassero il protocollo ActivityPub (noblogo.org) un sito che gestivamo dal 2007 e che abbiamo migrato su WriteFreely. Quando abbiamo gestito noi stessi le istanze sapevamo già che con actyvitypub avevamo un protocollo moderno in grado di trasformare Internet stesso, con i suoi migliaia di siti indipendenti, in una rete sociale.
Già allora sapevamo quanto questo nuovo protocollo fosse promettente per il web aperto. Sul fediverso si vede un elenco cronologico dei post delle persone che si seguono. Tutto qui. Non ci sono algoritmi o miliardari che promuovono i post in base alla loro popolarità o viralità, o se qualcuno ha pagato per promuoverli.
Gli utenti di ogni piattaforma possono seguire i loro amici o le persone interessanti su qualsiasi altra piattaforma della rete – apprezzando, commentando, condividendo e postando insieme.
Il Fediverso ci ricorda i primi tempi del Web. Siamo in competizione contro i silos e gli interessi aziendali, utilizzando uno standard aperto basato sul W3C e una soluzione distribuita. È fantastico che le aziende di social network sostengano il Fediverso e la Social Web Foundation, in modo da poter tornare ad avere una piazza libera da algoritmi e dal controllo delle aziende.
Dal 2019 le nostre istanze sono state utilizzate da oltre 100.000 persone e organizzazioni che si sono iscritte ai nostri servizi decentralizzati. E da allora abbiamo continuato a sostenere ed evolvere con il Fediverso.
In qualità di gestori di lunga data del Fediverso, i nostri obiettivi si allineano perfettamente con quelli della Fondazione e il suo lavoro sarà prezioso per realizzare pienamente il sogno di un social web veramente aperto.
Tra i suoi primi progetti, la Social Web Foundation riunirà Write.as, Ghost, WordPress e altri per risolvere i problemi relativi ai contenuti long-form e al tipo di articolo nel Fediverso. Con questo lavoro, ci auguriamo di vedere una presentazione più coerente dei contenuti long-form e una solida compatibilità multipiattaforma quando piattaforme come Ghost si uniranno al Fediverso.
È estremamente emozionante vedere un'organizzazione formale senza scopo di lucro prendere forma e affrontare la sfida di migliorare il Fediverse. Nonostante l'importanza del lancio di questa organizzazione, Evan vuole mettere le cose in chiaro: l'SWF non intende essere un'autorità centrale.
“Il Fediverso è troppo grande e troppo vario perché qualcuno possa pretendere di parlare a nome del Fediverso. Non è quello che vogliamo fare o chi vogliamo essere”, spiega, ‘Potremmo fare cose con cui le persone della rete non sono d'accordo, come incoraggiare le organizzazioni dei media a unirsi alla rete, ma quello che vogliamo fare è aiutare la missione di far crescere e migliorare il Fediverso nel tempo’.
Ci auguriamo che la continua collaborazione con la Social Web Foundation aiutino il Fediverso a crescere e a diventare il social che abbiamo sempre sognato: quello in cui ognuno può controllare con chi interagire e come, senza i capricci delle piattaforme di social media centralizzate di un tempo.

Launch of Social Web Foundation
Leaders of the open social networking movement have formed the Social Web Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to making connections between social platforms with the open standard protocol ActivityPub.The “social web”, also called the “Fediverse”, is a network of independent social platforms connected with the open standard protocol ActivityPub. Users on any platform can follow their friends, family, influencers, or brands on any other participating network.
ActivityPub was standardized by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 2018. It has attracted over 100 software implementations, tens of thousands of supporting web sites, and tens of millions of users.
Advocates of this increased platform choice say it will bring more individual control, more innovation, and a healthier social media experience. But there is work to do: journalism, activism, and the public square remain in a state of uncertain dissonance and privacy, safety and agency remain important concerns for anyone participating in a social network.
Leadership
The founding team of SWF merges knowledge of the Fediverse with a user-centric mindset.
- Evan Prodromou, current editor of the ActivityPub specification and author of the book “ActivityPub: Programming for the Social Web” from O’Reilly Media, is Research Director.
- Mallory Knodel, previously CTO of the Center for Democracy and Technology and human rights and internet standards researcher, will act as Executive Director.
- Tom Coates, product designer and entrepreneur, will serve as the organization’s Product Director.
Mallory Knodel (@ohmallory@socialwebfoundation.org) says, “To fight inequality, participate in democracy, build an equitable society and economy, we can’t rely on a few corporate-owned, profit-driven spaces. The Social Web Foundation is our best chance to establish the conditions in which the new social media operates with zero harm.”

The foundation’s program will concentrate on:
- educating general and targeted audiences about the social web
- informing policy-makers about issues on the social web
- enhancing and extending the ActivityPub protocol
- building tools and plumbing to make the social web easier and more engaging to use
“With this program, The Social Web Foundation can catalyze more growth on the Fediverse while improving user experience and safety,” says founder Prodromou (@evanprodromou@socialwebfoundation.org). “Our goal is to unblock users, developers and communities so they can get the most out of their social web experience.”
