Bernie Sanders becomes first US senator to say Israel committing genocide in Gaza

[about f---ing time!]

Joseph Gedeon in Washington
Wed 17 Sep 2025 18.18 EDT

“We, as Americans, must end our complicity in the slaughter of the Palestinian people,” he wrote. “Having named it a genocide, we must use every ounce of our leverage to demand an immediate ceasefire, a massive surge of humanitarian aid facilitated by the UN, and initial steps to provide Palestinians with a state of their own.”

He now joins a small but growing list of House members including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, as well as Vermont representative Becca Balint, who also called it a genocide earlier in the day.

“Today, I believe the Israeli government is committing a genocide against the Palestinian people,” Balint wrote in an op-ed in the Courier. “As the granddaughter of a man murdered in the Holocaust, it is not easy for me to say that.”

Palestine reshared this.

in reply to Peter Link

Why is the truth so difficult to say?

What Israel is doing to Palestinians is genocide.

in reply to lemmylump

Killing any and all Muslims has been fully justified since 9/11. All 1.3 billion of them are enemy combatants.

And no, before you ask, this doesn't apply in reverse to white Western Christians. It's actually racist of you to suggest it would.

in reply to Peter Link

About fucking time, too. It was a running joke that he had an autocorrect function in his brain that changed every instance of "Israel" to "Netanyahu" and deleted every mention of the word genocide.

Good on him for finally showing the courage to speak directly and honestly about the worst genocide since the most famous one, though.

Now if only he could realize that a two state solution is a nonstarter. Israel has shown that they don't exempt the territories of foreign nations any more than the occupied Palestinian territories.

The only way to achieve anything resembling lasting peace is to dismantle the Israeli apartheid regime and replace it with an ACTUALLY democratic nation that doesn't inherently discriminate based on ethnicity, religion, and ancestry.

the worst genocide since the most famous one

... Really? Worse than Rwanda? Cambodia? It's enough that it's very very bad, you don't have to go flaunting your historical ignorance.

in reply to silasmariner

Yes, worse than both of those.

I'm not at all ignorant about either, but you might be ignorant of the sheer scale and longevity of the one Israel has been continually committing since 1948.

in reply to Viking_Hippie

Ok. Wow. I'm in the wrong channel for this. I apologise. This was not the place for the conversation. Removed.

said atrocities have only recently graduated to fit the definition of genocide

No, they have only recently worsened enough and become publicly verifiable enough that people are admitting what's been true for a century.

There's a reason people weren't making those claims until the last couple of years

And that reason is that the media and governments of all western nations were implicitly trusting the Hasbara lies and gaslighting most other people to do so too.

That the lies only recently stopped working doesn't mean that they only recently started being lies.

in reply to silasmariner

There’s a reason people weren’t making those claims until the last couple of years

Plenty of people correctly said it was a genocide since 1948, so I'm not sure what you mean here.

in reply to craftymansamcf

Ditto.

I don't disagree with the points I made, but they were made insensitively in an inappropriate space, and I am removing them

technically incorrect sense when referring to forced displacement

Forced displacement and ethnic cleansing isn't genocide??

That bar was not met until recently.

Performing genocide denial and erasing the Nakba to show why genocide has only just occurred is weird.

technically incorrect sense when referring to forced displacement

Again, best to remove this

You said the bar for genocide has only just been reached in 2025.... erasing the Nakba that started in 1947.

Worse than Rwanda? Cambodia?

We're looking at hundreds of thousands of casualties, virtually the entire population of the Gaza strip, dead within the next two years.

That said, the civil war in Sudan is potentially worse by raw numbers, as they've got a large population.

In terms of percentages, it's a race to the bottom between these two modern day genocides.

in reply to UnderpantsWeevil

Because after all, if someone else can just come along and remove something I said, surely I should be permitted the same capability

Sadly he didn't. He is tailing the movement right now but he is trying to get in front of it to be able to steer it to more peaceful ways. He even starts the speech condemning Hamas and asserting "Israel's [sic] right to defend itself". I think it's pretty obvious what he is trying to do and why no one should believe that he cares one bit for the palestinians.

Also gaza isn't even the worst genocide going on right now, the same tactics are used in South Sudan on an even larger scale.

in reply to Viking_Hippie

Now if only he could realize that a two state solution is a nonstarter.

i hope you like waiting because that's all you're going to get from him.

in reply to eldavi

I know.

I've long since given up on him ever getting there, but that doesn't mean that I can't express that it would be better if he did 🤷

in reply to Peter Link

About damn time! Even worse is that it is only him - thus far.
in reply to Peter Link

Fuck him , after all this time this is how he starts his op-ed :

"Hamas, a terrorist organization, began this war with its brutal attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 innocent people and took 250 hostages. Israel, as any other country, had a right to defend itself from Hamas"

he is complicit in genocide

in reply to gecko

Wow Bernie Sanders claims all 373 active duty IDF Nazis killed were innocent people.

Fuck Bernie Sanders.

in reply to gecko

Trying to pass off on duty IDF soldiers as innocent civilians is absolutely disgusting.
in reply to BrainInABox

Also lumping in deaths from Israeli bombs in that figure (re: Hannibal directive)
in reply to gecko

History began on October 7th. Hamas was mean to Israel for no reason. They're all just psychotic monsters who need to be wiped off the face of the earth

But the Israelis went a little too far. So I'm writing them a letter asking someone to apologize.

in reply to Peter Link

It's good that he calls it what it is. Starting with Okt. 7 is ridiculous, but I take it.
