The web is full of shit but we mostly don't see it cause nobody we know links to it. Obscurity protects us. Anybody can post anything but there's no algo making sure that we see something that upsets us when we open a browser. There's no economic incentive for engagement. We don't need mods scouring the web making sure it won't upset anyone.

Similarly, the fedi can do free speech better than corporate platforms because there's no pressure to chase profit here. That's the trade-off. #SocialWeb

mamday reshared this.

so you are arguing, that moderation isn’t that important on e.g. Mastodon? I tend to agree, but then I have never been attacked on any platform. Lots of people here seem to have different experiences (even on here) and thus different opinions on moderation.

@jraedisch

I am arguing that on fedi, moderation only focus on tagging and spamming hashtags. where one user pushes content on others. outside of that, we should let people post anything that's otherwise legal. if somebody horrible shows up here to spew crap, don't defederate. be as open as the rest of the open Internet. unless they bother people directly or host a server with such users and don't stop them from bothering people. I want all manner of convos and I think we can handle it well.

I would maybe want to sprinkle some search filters in there, like some common conception of “safe surfing”, erring on the side of caution and easy to deactivate.

It seems more probable to me though that we will keep having different open platforms. E.g. Mastodon will be for the (superficially😬) super cautious, Nostr for the reckless, BlueSky for the hip,… .

@jraedisch

I want one social web tho. safe surfing is good but that shouldn't be about the network content or mods but the search engine you choose imo.

in reply to william.maggos

if you want one open network (again: me too) there will probably be a default “safe” engine which the majority will use.
(Are you for opt-in or opt-out of your content being indexable by different search engines? If your answer is opt-out (like mine) that again might not be fediversish.)
in reply to Jasper

yes, opt-out. most use a safe search engine while the network is united and everybody feels they can say whatever they want as long as they aren't being an asshole seems like a great future.

sometimes important things will be said or discovered by people that mostly say things better left unsaid. I want those posts to be able to go viral too.
