According to httparchive.org/reports/page-w…, the median weight in KB for web page tech on desktop:

Over the last 14.5 years:

HTML
2010: 20KB;
mid 2024: 33KB;
Increase of 65%.

Images
2010: 229KB;
mid 2024: 1,062KB;
Increase of 464%.

JavaScript
2010: 89KB;
mid 2024: 640KB;
Increase of 719%.

Over the last 9 years:

Video
mid 2015: 173KB;
mid 2024: 3,872KB;
Increase of 2,238%.

I reckon that in the era of AI the JS gradient is gonna steepen significantly

So, a lot of the bandwidth people seem to want/need nowadays is due to a bloated web rather than a more useful web?

@nellie_m

Definitely makes sense if it's a two-way event, but if it's just a one-way tutorial though... ?

Is the proliferation of unnecessary one-way video tutorials connected to that faked, debunked study from years ago which claimed that videos get more engagement?

@nellie_m The profit motive makes it worse for sure, but I think it’s mostly a particularly easy to see example (if one knows how to look) of what happens when the basic human desire to connect in as full a sense as possible – mastodon.social/@urlyman/11302… – is decoupled from any awareness of the material effects of the manner of connection
