RE: mastodon.social/@_elena/115943…

Good morning Fedi friends!

Thank you to all the people who participated in my poll. I plan to write a blog post early next week about all the problematic aspects of #WSocial. And I grabbed a URL that makes for a perfect shortlink / redirect to the article.

Given the massive media coverage here in France, I strongly believe it's not wise to stay silent and wish W Social away.

Quick note: I'll be offline most of the day at a child's birthday party.

Have a great day! And yay Minnesota!

Dear Fedi friends,

I'm pretty fired up exposing the ridiculousness of #WSocial, a new social network purported to be a European alternative to X that launched at Davos (yikes).

The French press devoted many articles to it (meanwhile: crickets about the Fediverse).

Before I go full steam ahead grabbing domain names and creating a web site that shows the weaknesses of W / suggests to check out the Fediverse instead, I want to put it to you: should I do it?

Great work!

Presumably, like #EuroSky, it is a long way from launch.

So we need to leverage the noise/hype to get journalists and others to try #Mastodon out of curiosity and find something already mature and established.

I think German media is not covering this. But is it an official platform by the EU or a random cash grab?
in reply to barning

@barning half-baked attempt by a Swedish non-profit filled with rich people who launched it at Davos

where did you see/ear "massive media coverage here in France"? I’m listening to France Info everyday for at least 30 minutes, and didn’t ear about W even once.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

if they all talk about it once, it’s probably just because they all copy/paste AFP news, without much actual journalism.

This is why I try to get just one big relevant source and not read/listen to it too much.

Did some media talk about W multiple times?

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Sounds good! Oh and @Anders_S had some insight about the company / companies behind it after some thorough research. I’m sure you can ask him about it

@MediaActivist Good shout. With venture capital funded startups you only have power at one point in their lifecycle: at the very start when they haven’t scaled yet and don’t yet have network effects. If you can kill their growth curve then, you can kill the startup. If, however, you “give them the benefit of the doubt” so they can use their initial cash injection to scale and achieve network effects, they’re set. They become another Facebook, X, etc. And they remain.

I go into more detail in my older talks, e.g., this one from six years ago: Ethical Technology or Feudalism?

@aral This looks great, thanks - I have it opened ready to watch later!

@aral Fantastic. Just last Wednesday I facilitated a workshop where I claimed that much of what we use now would've been considered "malware" back in the day. Perhaps predictably, I love the points on journalism as clickbait too (I've just included that quote from Axel Springer's lawyer in my website section on "Why Media Activism?"!) Thank you!

@MediaActivist Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I wish it wasn’t still relevant. But I realised at about that time that talking about this – while important – isn’t enough. Folks would clap me in one breath and the person from Google in the next. Fingers crossed the Small Web will have an impact. Even if it doesn’t, at least it’ll exist.
in reply to Aral Balkan

@aral Yes it can be a refuge if not an alternative. And wow, people can applaud good tech talks but really ought to pick a side!
in reply to Jay Baker

@MediaActivist Sadly, folks applaud anyone who speaks confidently. I even started telling people during my talks that they shouldn’t just accept what I’m saying because I say it confidently and maybe with a modicum of charisma but think about what I’m saying and what the next person is going to be saying and think critically about all of it, but… 🤷‍♂️
in reply to Aral Balkan

@aral @MediaActivist you’re such an eloquent speaker Aral (content + form), it’s hard to fight the urge to applaud you. We are so lucky to have you here on the Fediverse advocating for all these worthy causes 💖
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Until it does not materialize inside the institutions, I don't think it's relevant.
This thing seems pretty much unknown, no real information about the organization, the company, the business model.

Just a name and some ugly video @ Davos.

They're hoping / begging EU politicians to *move* from X.
European Commission already has blog/video instances and they don't use them.

The W target is some #bluesky european users who both understand the need of decentralization and are enthusiast to give to someone a copy of their documents and migrate.
