In the USA, "the AI boom is fueling a frenzy of data centers that are competing with residential homes for capital, power, water, and even sonic space. The result is a housing market stuck in neutral, with the potential for higher bills on the horizon, and neighborhoods kept awake by the hum of chillers designed to keep machines-not people-cool."

There are so many hidden costs to AI.

any idea of where we might get a list of neighborhoods that are being targeted. Our community is being overrun with warehouses and I’m afraid we might be at target and want to sell soon anyway so wld love to find out-

The problem is national in one sense. The thread from a few weeks ago was started by individuals who live in small towns in different parts of the US. They were mentioning that fly by night companies things that were put together just recently we're making bids to construct data centers.

My guess is that this was shell corporation that existed expressly to get the rights which would subsequently be sold to another company like Amazon.

@BlueWaver22
Probably the most effective thing you can do is get several friends together to pepper York city Council and if you have a local paper or group chat or something and start talking about this on a regular basis.

Tell your city council that that you don't want your utility bills to double your water, air and acoustic environment, polluted, and property values to be destroyed.

Emphasize the last bit because cities are exquisitely sensitive to tax revenue

And secretive state agencies with no legislative oversight established under former GOP govs are approving them and helping them go forward which will put huge cost for energy and water onto taxes and every day citizens -of course

I mean it's not hidden is it
We all know about it
People outside of the affected places just don't seem to give a shit enough of the time :/

@noodlemaz I'd very much call it hidden as it is NOT knowledge in the public discourse (at least IMO)

I for one assumed most datacenters would be built far off-urban zoning.
(TBS I'm definitely not positively biased towards them either)

in reply to Gerry McGovern

These data centers must be charged a large surcharge to keep residents prices the same. They are billion dollar corporations!! Or just shut them down.

I am overjoyed to see a reporter who gets it. Economist do not see this. They are blind to it just kills me.. There’s only one economist even in the position to see this issue. All the rest of them as far as I know don’t even acknowledge that this situation exists. They don’t see it as a problem.

Definitely seeing it w Excel in WI. Rates have tripled, where those who still have electric coops have seen maybe 20-30% increase. And those coops feed off an Excel main line. Excel needs to be made into a user owned utility.

When the droughts worsen, who will be prioritized?

been out in Austin, Texas to protest the AI survillence contract with LiveView none of us want. They are trying to sneak it through regardless of the outright rejection of this.
