What are Mastodon Lists and Why You Should Consider Using Them.

This thread is for new users and anyone who does not use Lists.

Lists are groupings of a subset of the accounts you follow. A List Feed is a feed comprised of just the accounts included in the List.

For example, the image below shows a the user's Lists. Clicking on any one will bring up a feed comprised of only the followed accounts in that List.

So, if these ☝️ were your Lists and you clicked on Astro, you'd see a feed composed of all the posts from people you have grouped into your Astro list. You can call this your Astro List Feed.

Why is this convenient? Well, once you follow lots of people, it is really helpful to be able to determine which subjects you are interested in at any given time. Lists organize the accounts you follow into topical feeds.

Why not take a few minutes now to get started with lists?

It's different than Twitter lists.

That is a common confusion. Mastodon lists are not public. They are just like sorting your follows into different folders.

Admittedly, it is some work if you want to go through your current follows and assgn them to lists. Found it to be kind of fun, but it does take some time. Then, if you get in the habit of assigning a new follow to a list (or lists) right when you follow them, it's really easy.

i guess I like Just scrolling timeline or Discover New Accounts. List seem to be for people who want to switch or prioritize topics. So like for work stuff. For me mastodon is more for politics etc.. I take it how it comes 🤷

@kielkontrovers

Understood. Spend most time on politics too, but also astronomy, climate, technology, miscellaneous stuff, and a few others. But, if you are only into one topic, then lists are probably overkill.

Thanks for your interest in the subject.

The best part of lists for me is, 'Hide these posts from home' timeline. If ticked on, accounts on the list will appear in lists and not in the main timeline. I put my news accounts in one list, flipboards, politics, certain topical accounts in their own list, etc.

@eljojo When that feature came along, it was a game changer for my timeline. It's much more purer. I see what my human accounts are saying, doing and sharing. Pretty much, if it is a bot or automated account, it is stuck in a list somewhere by topic. Plus, they are always there. Unless a new post from list members is created, the list just doesn't move. @mayintoronto

I know people are pushing, and hope it comes in the next big release, for hashtags to be saved to lists. I am sooooo waiting for that.

The only thing that bothers me about lists is, there is no way to turn boosts off and it appears they don't plan to change that.

Is there any hope that Lists support will ever come to the Mastodon app for iOS devices? That’s the only way I currently use Mastodon.

No idea. All these instructions are using web browser interface.

Mastodon's "Lists" and "Advanced web interface" are useful for monitoring multiple timelines on a single screen.

Yes, hashtags lists would be such a game changer.

I would love hashtag lists and list alerts, as well as see only content from accounts *not* on any list, collaborative lists, easily sharing lists...
