🚨 Trump has signed NSPM-7, a national security directive that dramatically expands federal powers against what it calls “domestic terrorism.” It orders a national strategy to “disrupt” individuals or groups “that foment political violence,” including “before they result in violent political acts.”
Here’s what to know:
1. NSPM-7 directs the entire national security apparatus – DOJ, FBI, Treasury, IRS, DHS – with little public transparency or congressional oversight. It retools the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces to pursue not only violent plots but also activities it lumps under “civil disorder,” sweeping protest into the counterterrorism framework.
2. Treasury is ordered to map and disrupt funding streams, and the IRS must revoke tax-exempt status from nonprofits deemed to support political violence.
3. For the first time, the Attorney General is authorized to recommend domestic groups for terrorist designation – a power historically used only against foreign organizations.
4. NSPM-7 defines “indicators” of extremism to include anti-capitalism, anti-Christianity, and “hostility” toward traditional views on family or “morality.”
5. By targeting beliefs and protest activity, the directive positions dissent itself as a potential crime.
