My Ubuntu Summit talk is up! Where I talk about:
1. How Desktop UX is effectively dead
2. Why I hate the term UX/UI with the heat of 1000 suns
3. How OSS can actually innovate in #ux

have we tried a bunch of icons arranged in a vaguely rectangular shape?
in reply to Coryndon Luxmoore

@luxmoore @codinghorror Nah, but seriously, I had the idea many years ago to (have someone) make a 3d desktop/file manager/ whatchammacllit. Should be easier (and more fun) to navigate, after all we’re built for 3d. Instead of folder structures you’d have storage “rooms”, or even memory palace-ish structures.

I have an interest in making experimental window managers for Linux, but I'm under the impression such a project is a significant undertaking in engineering effort. Is that generally correct? Is there a way forward for small time hobby experimentation, or is this sort of thing pretty much the exclusive territory of large organizations now days?

(apologies if the talk covers this, I don't have time to watch it at the moment)
in reply to aeva

@aeva Sorry, but I'm not really qualified to answer that as I haven't created a Linux Window manager.

tl;dr: the talk invites to do more UX because the past leaders have stopped innovating.
It does not talk about the technical details, but more about what it means to innovate and one powerful techniques that is fundamental to UX: learning loops.

Edit: BTW amazing talk. It's was worth watching for me 😁
