For Newcomers To Mastodon - You Don't Need An App

One of the really great things about Mastodon is it runs perfectly well in a web browser both on a computer and mobile device.

That's right! No need to download any app. No Play Store or Apple Store.

Just go to joinmastodon.org/, pick a server and get going.

Some people like the apps, and there are plenty of good apps, but many users, maybe most, simply use a web browser. Highly recommend Firefox, DDG, or Vivaldi.

Maybe it would ease the onboarding process if instead of "choose a server" we say "choose a comunity".

@ninguem I keep on saying this too, but apparently that has been tried is even more confusing though I'm not sure why, they have a reason but it has slipped through my grey cells

Thing is, choosing a server is kind of a necessary part of actually being decentralized.

Get that it is a psychological hurdle, but it turns out to be a necessary one if you want to be part of a distributed network.

That said, if people want a good safe recommendation that is not the main mastodon.social instance (which is also fine BTW) just pick @stux mstdn.social. You can't go wrong this well run EU based instance.

We are not denying that, agreed choosing a server needs to be done, I just think people would understand better if they were choosing a community. Yes choosing a community would actually be choosing a server but people much prefer joining communities than servers, they understand what those are, no one would have to give long explanations about what they are.

If you prefer one, though, on mobile there's several available on eg. F-Droid. I've tried Tusky, it's fine.

"pick a server and get going." This step is daunting for new non-tech users. I wish the devs paid more attention to this.

If people feel this way just go to:

mstdn.social/about

...and click Create Account

(And yes, the recommendation of @stux mstdn.social is intentional)

I'm about as technophobic as it's possible to and still own a laptop and a smartphone. I avoid apps like the plague. Yet it was easy to sign up to Mastodon. Browser-based websites all the way for me.

Mastodon Migration reshared this.

okay but the app is much better. The web app is not as smooth of performance. I've tried both, I initially used the PWA then switched to the tusky because the native UI is just better.
