We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/germany-c…

Was wäre die Alternative? WhatsApp? Schrecklicher Gedanke.

App installieren
(Mail-) Account über nine.testrun.org/
erstellen. Kontakt über Scan des QRcodes verbinden fertig.
Total easy
in reply to Ulli

in reply to .beejay

@beejay

@URH1 @psc @signalapp

in reply to Schlüssellochkind 👁️

@fasnix @Tutanota i mean they should know that Germany de-signs that cause they are from Germany, yep? it's the only reason i pinged them (for them to know that country their in votes for law which is against them)

@hacknorris @fasnix We know about this, and are actively fighting against Chat Control. Thanks for your support!

Is there an email address one should send messages to?
That would be helpful.
in reply to Signal

in reply to Signal

if chat control happens, what’s the alternative?
Threema and 24/7 vpn? Sounds like we are going to be like china.
in reply to Gauff 🇪🇺

@gaufff @delta as for my understanding, all those apps will be blocked on app stores or they need to comply with the chat control law, so how would this help? Or am I wrong?
Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to Randy

@randy_ @gaufff the precise legal repercussions and steps how some chat control could be implemented, are guess work. It's a technical quagmire even if players collaborate which we are pretty sure signal and delta chat will not, and rather pull out if it comes to it. At the current moment it's about preventing chatcontrol wholesale because it is an exceptionally bad idea that does not help to protect children or get them out of abuse situations.

Germany has wanted total surveillance for years, especially the constellation CDU CSU.

Some German states already have Israeli Surveillance and Prediction software, now the awful gov under Merz wants to feed that.

Germany has a very embarrassing history with privacy in some moments of its history, and it is on track to repeating them.

Never again means now.

Without privacy there is no true democracy, and without privacy the fascists will win.

The new global standard for government is to sit on the fence until the bidding runs high enough.

well the only remaining messenger for me will be Threema then... but I pray it won't happen
in reply to Signal

idea: start remove encryption for specific users from the German government and post them online for everyone to see...

although this would need a fundamental change in Signal and it would no longer be the de-facto safe standard for secure communications nowadays.

Why did you publish this as a pdf file instead of a blog post?

in reply to Signal

in reply to Signal

The alternative would be the Session Messenger or the Briar messenger. Both of them are completely decentralized with no central servers and open source. Impossible to censor.
in reply to Signal

Still the same old hypocrisy from Signal as the supposed advocate of users and their privacy, even though in reality only the lock-in effect is important for its own business model.

in reply to Signal

Chat Control is evil.
Seriously how can someone even think it's a good idea?
in reply to Signal

the lobby keeps repeating its attempts to ignore peoples privacy and I dare say some particular parts of our government are corrupt enough to simply pave the way for such intrusion.
in reply to Signal

"We urge Germany to be wise and to stand firm in its principles. We cannot let history repeat itself, this time with bigger databases and much much more sensitive data." This is vital since the actual damages and bodily harm caused by invasive surveillance have yet to be fully understood. CBTA supports Signal in its endeavors to uphold private communications accessible. #privacy #surveillance #Germany #biometrics
in reply to Signal

We must absolutely put pressure on the government to prevent this from happening.
in reply to Signal

Sadly, liberal Germans have been forced to watch the Bavarian far-right party CSU's political plans get blocked by the German Federal Constitutional Court and the European Court of Justice for decades. This was already the case with data retention for telecommunications and the monitoring of IT devices via Trojan horses.
The Minister of Justice is against chat monitoring, but is unable to push her views through. The Chancellor is in favour of it.

Please don't disconnect us in that case but practice civil resistance by keeping a secure option running even if you need to defy an unjust "law" for it.
in reply to always tired

@project1enigma I don’t think that’s a sound strategy. Breaking the law, regardless of how “unjust” it is, could result in a hefty fine that would threaten Signal’s existence.

@signalapp

in reply to ilyess

Screw you statist. Use your braincells, can’t they just ignore that fine LMAO
in reply to zaire arcana

@soop They could ignore it, sure. Typically the government would then order all ISPs to block access to Signal. What does that get you?

@project1enigma @signalapp

in reply to ilyess

@ilyess @soop @project1enigma Some governments already do that. Signal reacted by providing a simple way for as many people as possible to spin up Signal TLS Proxies on unblocked IPs.
github.com/signalapp/Signal-TL…

Signal does its very best for years even facing regimes trying to block them. Them leaving the app store fronts in said regimes is a necessary evil to protect their organisation, but it absolutely does not stop anyone from using Signal (despite increased pressure).

in reply to Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@Natanox Yes, their proxy is amazing. VPNs and Tor are other methods to circumvent censorship. I see these workarounds as a last resort measure, though. Rather than spending time on this, we should pour our energy into keeping chat control from becoming law.

It's great that Signal has native support for a proxy, but how about email and cloud providers, or any entity that uses e2ee? Chat control could be the start of a dystopian era; I hope we don't get there.

I didn't know this was client-side scanning. How on earth is that legal under any European jurisdiction? It's like forcing everyone to send a copy of every email or letter to the government! I'd be surprised if this doesn't require changes in constitutions...
