PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

Thanks for letting us know, but I do wonder whether that kind of information should be posted to @signalapp and not on its president's personal account.
in reply to scy

@scy @signalapp This. I first checked the app account and found nothing, then I just happened to see Meredith's toot to learn the cause. This needs improvement.
in reply to Meredith Whittaker

Absolutely no offense meant, but maybe relying on Amazon (who are sort of antithetical to everything Signal stands for) for anything isn't the greatest of ideas?

Signal server component does depend on AWS components eg. Dynamodb as is documented here: blog.iriyanto.com/self-deploy-…

I was expecting status.signal.org/ to show some sort of indication of there being an issue but it just says everything is working. It was my first port of call when I saw messages weren't sending for me.

Downdetector seems to provide a more realistic picture.

@ebauche

@Mer__edith

It does now, at least for me.
I would've liked something showing up on the Signal mastodon account

in reply to Meredith Whittaker

"Some" people is quite the understatement ... I hope your admins can switch us all over to another AWS region so we can use Signal again. (Yes, I am one of the "some" people affected and yes, it is causing real problems for me)

@adbenitez @jwildeboer
Or use x chat 😂🤣😂
He promotes x chat now (objectively)

DeltaChat is good but the problem here is not the Signal..
Signal wasn't the only one that had problems today.. these things happen rarely..

Comment section is still Karen as fuck.

Down for some people, related to a major AWS outage - how do they come up with the conclusion that they are solely relying on AWS from just these two facts?
Good luck working on their first incident.

in reply to FifiSch

@FifiSch

"Current Infrastructure Costs (as of November 2023): Approximately $14 million dollars per year."

"Personnel costs are 19 million dollars per year"

"From 2025, Signal expects this amount to rise to as much as 50 million dollars annually"

aboutsignal.com/blog/what-does…

I don't know maybe it is time to reconsider where to throw your money at, a good chunk is ending in the big corps like #Amazon

@adbenitez are there calculations how DeltaChat with an average Chatmail server compares to Signal in terms of costs per user?

I'd love to have concrete numbers about that.

thanks for posting.

Related: why is this not showing on:
status.signal.org

i do not want to find this first thing on Social Media, also why is not @signalapp posting this as well?

in reply to Ivo Dujmović

@dujmovivo @signalapp Yep, the status page not showing the outage belongs in the category "You had ONE job!" What use is a status page that doesn't show the status correctly?
in reply to Timo Ollech

@dujmovivo @signalapp The app DID show a message after a while during the outage. But of course when the app cannot reach the servers it can't receive any message from them. That's why you have a status page that's independent from the actual service.
