Hello all Chirp group admins!

Unfortuntely Chirp groups host Chirp.social is officially shutting down. If you're running a Chirp group, now is the moment to move your members to another group platform on the Fediverse.

The maintainer of Chirp recommends moving to Guppe, which is the most popular Fediverse group host. Another option is Friendica which lets you have group-specific moderators.

More info about using Fediverse groups in a guide at:

@expert

The software hasn't been maintained in a while, I'm guessing the developer just didn't have the time? It's a lot of work to take on a project like this.

If someone else wants to continue the project that would be possible as it's free open source software, but so far no one has stepped forward so I'm guessing the developer decided closing it was the only option left.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

damn, I had [at]privacymatters[at]chirp.social group, does that mean it's going to die and will not work anymore?

Yes. When the Chirp server shuts down your group will disappear. But if you set up a similar group on Guppe or Friendica you can ask your members to follow that new group instead.

These group systems (Guppe, Friendica, Chirp) all work in a similar manner, though Guppe relies entirely on server moderators rather than group moderators.

daaamn, is it possible to move it somehow to another group provider from Chirp?
in reply to This account is inactive!

@expert There is no migration option. You will have to create the group first and then post to the old group a couple of times to let people know that they must follow the new group.

If someone spams a Guppe group you can report it as spam to your own server's moderator and also the moderator on the spammer's server (there's an option for sending to both on the report form). It's treated in the same way as spam on an ordinary non-group post.

BUT if you want a group-specific moderator you can use Friendica instead. That allows several mods per group.

@phanjam @jonobie

For what it's worth, there are the top 50 most active groups listed at a.gup.pe. Also, if anyone on your server is following a group it will show up in ordinary searches as an account.

I'm trying to help the situation by listing as many active groups as I can at @FediFollows and fedi.directory/tag/guppe/ (plus these groups are listed in specific categories that can be browsed along with non-group accounts at fedi.directory).

@jonobie my concern with guppe is the discoverability of its groups is quite poor. Mastodon really should have an organic groups feature of its own...

@hello

Hey there! Thanks for the reply, didn't know about you 😀

Do you have a page about the project, or a source code page, or is it just the sign-up page for the moment?

in reply to Fedi.Tips

good morning.
All we have at the moment is our main about page, plus a help page. It's hopefully enough for people to get going.
in reply to FediGroups Admin

@hello

Okay! Just out of interest, is the software FOSS or closed source? Can people host their own FediGroups instances?

in reply to Fedi.Tips

Sorry, I missed this message yesterday. 😞

To be honest, there's been no thought given to opening it up or FOSS. That's not to say, never. The focus to date has been on getting a functional and stable service. It's early days.

With the demise of Chirp and guppe not working on many server types, the focus was on producing a more widely supported service.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

Now that you bring it up, I've had friendica in the back of my mind for a bit now but could never really explore it because I didn't find how to without creating an account.

Are there ways you know of to explore friendica without an account or to use any of my existing fediverse accounts to browse an instance?

in reply to Scraft161

@Scraft161

The only way I know is to sign up on an instance and try it out. Sorry 😦

But you only need the moderators to be on Friendica. The members of the group can be on Mastodon etc, they don't need to be on Friendica.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

That honestly kind of sucks for me then, I've been able to see a lot of the different platforms and browse things anonymously, but friendica wants to mimic Facebook a little too close there and I don't feel like making an account just to see if it's something that might interest me.

I guess the closest to the group thing might then be lemmy/kbin communities which show up as groups in mastodon.

in reply to Scraft161

The "group" label on Mastodon is something different. It doesn't work the same way as Chirp or Guppe or Friendica, and it shows up for many different kinds of situations (such as PeerTube channels though not PeerTube accounts).

We really need some new words for groups to distinguish between these different types 😁

@Scraft161

I tried out #friendica for a #group. I may have not been diving deep enough into the many options, but from the mastodon webinterface, I can't read the posts of the group. I guess, the posts are retooted to members also on mastodon, but their aggregation is not visible unless you at least visit friendica.

Guppe seems fast and smooth. It has no way to enhance the group description though (unless you set up your own server and alter the code I guess; it is open source).

in reply to Tornuggla

@Tornuggla @Scraft161

If you're a mod on a Friendica group, you have to log in on your Friendica account. It uses a Friendica server as the method of distributing posts to the group, whereas Guppe uses a.gup.pe (or another Guppe server if someone sets one up).

Visibility of posts on a Mastodon server would depend on whether someone on that server has followed that group.

in reply to Scraft161

There is a way to see a Friendica node's public timeline (a.k.a. the Local Community as it is called). Just access https://node.tld/community (where node.tld is the instance - or node - address; e.g. libranet.de/community is my node's local community). However, bear in mind two things:

  • Friendica is really customizable on the user side and there are a lot of filtering options. So don't be put off by the default aspect of the node (instance) you're on.
  • Content might be a bit scarce on many nodes. We're not many people around these places. But hey, I am here. I saw your comment, I replied to you, you can do that as well with everyone you follow on Mastodon already.

Bear in mind Fedigroups is very new, they're just testing and don't have any source available AFAIK.

@Fedi.Tips can you see my DMs? 😁 I previously sent you a list with all the Friendica groups that I follow back when you were on the other instance, but I haven't heard from you since.
