We've been receiving a lot of requests for us to answer this crucial question, and we are delighted to attempt to provide you with the information you need as to whether you can read braille with your clit.

First of all, it is important to establish parameters on the scope of this question. It is in fact two questions: can you read braille with your clitoris, and does this impact reading speed?

For the purpose of answering this question, we will assume that the OP means the clitoral glans. The glans is the only part of the clitoris which sticks out. The rest of it is beneath the skin of the vulva. Here's what the whole organ looks like; the glans is at the top.

OP is quite correct in their understanding that the glans of the clitoris has 10,000 nerve endings. The 8,000 nerve endings figure is a myth based on cow clitorises (more on this here: masto.ai/@vagina_museum/109478…)

Braille, for those of you who do not know this, is a tactile writing system consisting of raised characters which is usually read by the fingers. However, if a braille reader does not have fingers, they can read using other parts of the body, often the toes or the lips.

In this regard, it would be perfectly possible to read braille with the clitoral glans, as braille does not inherently require fingers to read. However, there is a major caveat to this.

The first problem with reading braille using your clitoral glans is one of distraction by becoming immediately very turned on. The clitoris is made from erectile tissue. When you're aroused, it becomes erect, and applies pressure to itself, the vagina and the urethra. Rubbing the glans can provoke this response. It would therefore make reading difficult, although not impossible if you set your mind to it.

The other hurdle is that the skin of the clitoral glans is very delicate. Meanwhile, braille is inherently bumpy. And usually printed on embossed paper or refreshable displays. Neither of which would be incredibly comfortable to rub on your clit. It would likely very quickly cause irritation and pain if you were attempting to read a braille text using your clitoral glans.

However, this is not insurmountable. With sufficient lube and printing to a softer material, you might be able to do it.

Assuming sufficient lubrication, a softer material, and the grit and determination to read on through the horny, we turn to the second part of the question. Would the concentration of nerve endings in the clitoral glans increase reading speed?

And the answer is absolutely fucking not.

OP assumes that using multiple fingers for braille reading increases reading speed. While this is true, it is only indirectly true. It's not a case of more fingers = more letters. Multiple fingers are used to read braille to perform tasks such as holding place and supporting the primary reading finger. It's not like more fingers takes in more letters at once.

The thing about fingers is you have loads of them and can waggle them around freely. This freedom to waggle is simply not available to the clitoral glans. It's held in place by a suspensory ligament, and its position is smushed between the mons pubis and the labia majora. It's also protected by a hood, which in many people covers the entire glans. The clitoral glans is simply not positioned in such a way as to facilitate swift, speedy braille reading.

Now, it is possible that someone who has had metoidioplasty, a gender-affirming surgery which cuts the suspensory ligament to release more of the clitoral body outside of the body, may have a faster braille reading speed with the organ but it would probably still be slower than reading with the fingers on account of all the other issues pertaining to reading braille with the clitoral glans.

So there you have it. Could you read braille with your clitoral glans? Maybe, if all circumstances are perfectly met. Should you? We'll leave that up to you. Please let us know if you try it, we're a Vagina Museum, we collect these sorts of stories.

If you enjoyed this thread, you may be thrilled to know that we have a book club! This month, to tie in with our Menopause exhibition, we're reading thriller "The Change" by Kirsten Miller. Sadly, no #Cliterature books are yet available in clit-readable braille formats. vaginamuseum.co.uk/events/even…

Would the clitoris have to be aroused to be able to read, or could it read while not aroused? Would there be a difference in ability between aroused and not-aroused?
in reply to bjb

@bjb A very good question - when aroused, it might come out from under the hood a little more, which would provide more surface area to read with. However, distraction remains an issue.

@singingnala This reminds me of when someone tried using voiceover on their Ipad with their penis on a teamtalk server years ago. Wish I could say I was making that up, but nope

I’m surprise you don’t mention the work of Henry Head about the nerve division.

In this paper ( zenodo.org/records/1431636 ) write in 1908, Head speak about the sensibility of the glans penis (chapter IV, section 5, page 69) and he conclued : “we believe that the glans penis is an organ endowed
with protopathic and deep sensibility only. “ 1/2

I love absolutely everything about this. A question nobody in the history of humanity might have thought of. And an answer that is super well informed, takes a quite ridiculous question serious, gives all the information over could need (even thinks of trans perspectives) and is funny on top. Whoever wrote this: you are great and made my day 😀 thank you very much
