How to Boost Traffic Using Flipboardā€™s Popular Topics

[Share and spread the love] ::

Traffic is imperative!

To keep your readers interested, you have to think outside the box. Keeping up with the trends requires using imagination and all the tools available.
22017188
Flipboard is no different. You must create content that resonates with the platformā€™s engaged audience to stay on top of emerging trends.

By optimizing your magazines, utilizing all of what the app has to offer, and engaging with the platform, you will help drive traffic to your website.

A Good Place to Start

Did you know that Flipboard is an excellent research tool and a place for inspiration? Take advantage of the platformā€™s features to hone in on your target market and uncover new audiences.

As a publisher or content creator, you are endlessly looking for interesting angles for your articles. Finding a Niche on Flipboard is important to keep your readers interested. Your success sometimes depends on the sub-topics you choose.

In this article, I am sharing some of Flipboardā€™s sections for content inspiration.

Content Curation Tips for Engagement

Log in to your account to find trending topics in the ā€œFor Youā€, ā€œ10 for Todayā€, ā€œFlipboard Picksā€ and other popular Flipboard sections. These are some of the places to find ideas for your articles or to boost the visibility of your magazines.

  1. Reflip some of these featured articles in your magazines daily. This will signal the algorithm that your magazine has value.
  2. Find popular content by looking at the number of ā€œAddsā€, the ā€˜Commentsā€ and ā€œLikesā€. That gives you an idea of content popularity. Create more content around articles that drive lots of traffic. Double down on successful topics and continue curating similar material.
  3. Add some of these articles to your most popular magazines. Use a blend of your blog and the community posts. This will help position your content as an authority in your niche.
  4. As you become a resource, your readers will visit your magazine for updates and may come back often.
  5. Flipboard highlights certain articles as ā€œRecommendedā€ or ā€œPopular Now,ā€ which signals trending content.

Finding the Right Topics to Build a Magazine.

Here are a few tips to identify topics on Flipboard that align with audience interests.

  1. The ā€œFor Youā€ Section
This section is the first thing you see on your Flipboard tiles as you open the app. The ā€œFor Youā€ is a personalized feed based on your interests. Popular topics from people you follow will show up here, Readers read this section first to keep up-to-date. Flip through to find the latest trends tailored to your preferences. I rely on many articles here for my magazine curation.

A screenshot of Flipboardā€™s ā€œCommunityā€ SectionFlipboardā€™s Community Section
2. The Discover Section
Explore Flipboardā€™s ā€œDiscoverā€ section. This is the most important starting point to find topics that are popular in your category. Look at the attached image to get a sense of what topics are currently trending. The numbers under each topic give you a gauge of what readersā€™ reading habits are. Once you make a selection, the algorithm will build a convenient magazine with a mix of popular articles, blogs, and magazines. Add this ā€œSmart Magazineā€ to your home screen for easy access. Take some time to explore this category. Make notes of the articles that are getting a lot of engagement.
A screenshot of Flipboardā€™s Exploreā€ featureFlipboardā€™s Explore Feature
3. Read Group Magazines
Follow users and group magazines that have a high number of followers and engagement. These are great sources of inspiration for your future blog posts and magazines. Adding articles featured in these magazines or groups may help build your visibility. Here are magazines by popular users:

The Culinary Journey by Food, Drink, Life

šŸ«¶ The Culinary Journey: The best trending recipes

Art, architecture & photos | @shannybasar

4. Follow Flipboardā€™s ā€œCommunityā€ Magazine.
Flipboard highlights a collection of magazines that focus on trending topics. This section features articles that are widely read and shared. Content by top influencers and experts is showcased. Explore these collections to gain inspiration and insights from thought leaders.

5. Monitor The Fediverse
Flipboard is working to integrate with the Fediverse. Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, PeerTube, and more are goldmines of information. Especially as more publishers federate. This content might resonate on Flipboard as well. The use of hashtags related to your niche also helps to discover important conversations. I follow hashtags about topics I add to Flipboard, like art, photography, and travel. If your account is federated or not, use it to find topic ideas.

Hereā€™s a magazine where I gather my Fediverse inspiration:

Conversation On The Fediverse EDU

6. Use The ā€œSearchā€ Feature
Use Flipboardā€™s search feature: to find topics. Type in broad terms like ā€œtechnology,ā€ ā€œtravel,ā€ or ā€œAIā€ to see the latest content and related stories.

The search results will highlight the most popular stories. Youā€™ll have an idea of what is currently trending.

7. Curated Sections
Flipboard editors curate magazines, like News, Technology, Travel, Business, and more. These categories highlight trending and viral stories that are getting the most attention.

You can check these sections by navigating to the ā€œExploreā€ tab and selecting a category that interests you. Access this in the 4 squares on the bottom of your screen on mobile and to the right of your profile picture on desktop. Following these hubs can provide consistent insight into whatā€™s gaining traction.

They are trending magazines and stories. Flipboard often features sought-after issues on its home screen. Top influencers and topic experts curate popular content thatā€™s read or shared. Follow ā€œMagsWeLoveā€, ā€œFlipboard Picksā€ and others to get some insights.

Look at the number of followers or articles in these magazines to gauge how well a topic performs best.
A Screenshot of Flipboardā€™s Curated SectionsFlipboardā€™s Featured Magazines
8. Monitor Popular Publishers
Find top publishers or creators on Flipboard that focus on your areas of interest. Publications like TechCrunch, Wired, Forbes, or National Geographic often create content around trending topics. Check their Flipboard presence to track whatā€™s being discussed and shared.

Trending Topic Ideas:

To find content ideas that boost traffic on Flipboard, and align with current popular topics and trends that resonate with your audience. Here are just a few suggestions:

  • AI
  • Sustainability and Eco-Living
  • Health and Wellness
  • Tech Innovations
  • Finance and Investments
  • Remote Work Lifestyle
  • Entertainment
  • Travel

Donā€™t forget to:

  • Flip and engage regularly.
  • Consistency is key: The more you flip, the more exposure you gain on the platform.
  • Flip 5ā€“10 articles a day to stay active and increase the chances of being featured in Flipboardā€™s algorithms.
  • Join groups and collaborate.

Happy Flipping!

ICYMI! @mike's Dot Social interview with @jay.bsky.team came out earlier this week. They discussed the early days of Bluesky, innovating on social identity, and the benefits of an open social graph. "That right of free connection and communication is something that I think we've really lost in the world where there's just a few large companies that allow or deny interoperability, depending on how it serves their business interests," Graber said.

The #fediverse / #mastodon has been flooded with #FlipBoard bots as they so 'kindly' embraced #activitypub (and they still refuse to mark them as bots).

Most of these organizations will have no idea they're here (some have actual Mastodon account that block 'their' FlipBoard version..). And even if, they have no way of interacting.

Here's how to get rid of all this anti-social clutter (mastodon):

- Click on a XXX@flipboard.com username
- Click on the 3 dots.
- Select 'block domain'

Seems a little hyped, no? How many of these publications have even heard of Flipboard, let alone Mastodon?

Flipboardā€™s just a middleman platformā€”it doesnā€™t bring a publicationā€™s team, and doubtful even their attention, and certainly not their engagement, to Mastodon. It just brings snippets of content to lure you to #Flipboard (if youā€™re not careful what you click on).

I think Iā€™ll just hold out for the publications and their staff to join #Mastodon in an official capacity.

Not partnering with trillion-dollar, people-farming, human-rights-eroding, and democracy-destroying surveillance capitalists like Meta should be the lowest of low bars when it comes to organisations that purport to work on ethical technology but, clearly, even that bar is just too fucking high for some.

How to Use Flipboard Magazine Formats to Boost Traffic

Share and spread the love

The Three Types of Flipboard Magazines. (Group Magazine By World Wide Schooling)
By collecting information in a Flipboard magazine, your media takes on another dimension. Readers explore and enjoy content in a beautiful and engaging format.

Your publication begins with a Flipboard magazine.

In this article, I will share the three magazine formats that will take your publication to the next level. I will also share best practices for creating and sharing each one.

The RSS Feed Magazine:

By adding an RSS feed to a Flipboard you aggregate content directly from your blog(s) into a magazine. If you have this function in your Flipboard account, add your RSS feed to drive traffic to your blog. I have attached a screenshot to see how itā€™s done. This function is only available on desktops.
Adding an RSS feed to a Flipboard magazineAdding an RSS Feed to A Flipboard Magazine

Benefits

  1. Automated aggregation makes it easy to add sizable amounts of content to Flipboard magazines. There is no need to micromanage the account. Large publishers benefit from this function.
  2. You can also add many RSS feeds and categorize them by topic. The curation process is simplified even further.
  3. Flipboard adds content the minute it is published keeping the magazines always fresh. New content gets seen, and it helps get traffic to your publication.

Negatives

  1. Itā€™s not available for smaller publishers. You will have to curate your content by hand.
  2. Content from RSS feeds may feel automated and impersonal. A human touch is always needed to make a magazine personal and engaging. Like journalism, you want to feel that thereā€™s an author behind the article.
  3. More hands-on work for curators and curators that donā€™t have the RSS feature. You can hire a VA to assist with the process. Many users work with assistants from all over the world. You can find out more here in this blogger group.

Best Practices:

  1. Plan your magazines according to your topics and add the RSS feeds accordingly.
  2. Make sure your RSS feed runs smoothly. Keep it updated and active. Be mindful to check and fix your feed if it does not work. Donā€™t let automation take over.
  3. Make sure your content is reliable and factual. You want to build trust among your readers.
  4. Simplify your articles, donā€™t have too many ads or distractors. Some readers prefer to read the whole blog to get the full experience rather than switch to it. ā€œReader Viewā€.
  5. Donā€™t saturate your magazines with too many feeds. Keep things simple and easy for your readers. You want them to return.
  6. Check your RSS feed to exclude irrelevant content that may not be valuable to your readers. Try to keep the magazine focus.
  7. Introduce new RSS feeds to keep the magazine fresh and relevant.
  8. Adjust your feeds based on what performs well with your audience. You may want to replace underperforming feeds or focus more on popular sources.

Rinse and repeat. Automated is practical, but be mindful to monitor. Flipboard is all about quality and readership. Once you gain followers keep them interested with your amazing curation.

Single Curator Magazine

This is the magazine that you curate with a blend of mixed media. Make this one all yours. Besides articles and blog posts, add photos, and notes. Take advantage of Flipboardā€™s curation tools for a more interactive experience.
Creating A Flipboard Magazine for Your ContentCreating A Flipboard Magazine for Your Content

Benefits

  1. You have full creative control of your magazine. Incorporate various media like YouTube videos, podcasts, and Fediverse posts.
  2. Magazines are portable and easy to share on your blog, your newsletters, in the Fediverse, or social media posts.
  3. You can also add other peopleā€™s articles for a more varied experience.

As you curate magazines, you get a deep understanding of your audienceā€™s wants and needs. Armed with this knowledge, you can provide followers with what they want to read.

Negatives

  1. Flipboard requires a commitment and it can be very time-consuming. But once you get stuck in you become addicted and enjoy the process.
  2. Links may become disabled after some time and it can be a lengthy process to ā€œcleanā€ them out. I tend to put these links in the back of my magazines or eliminate them while sitting in front of my favorite TV show.
  3. Images may not appear on some flips. Be mindful of the amount of UTM links you are using in your articles.

Best Practices

  1. Do share your magazines outside of Flipboard, especially if you donā€™t have a following. Put them on your blog, and emails, and add a FlipIt icon to your publication.
  2. Do you add niched content to keep your audience engaged? Your readers may not want to read your whole blog. They might only be interested in a specific part of it. So curate with this in mind. If you have a travel blog segmented into countries. I might follow that one that has information on Argentina, for example.
  3. Build your Flipboard Brand Identity. Position yourself as a thought leader. Curate high-quality content to enhance your brandā€™s reputation. Control your narrative to align with your brandā€™s values.
  4. When you curate your content you can be selective as to what goes into a magazine. Filtering out irrelevant content. Always think of your audienceā€™s experience.

The best part of curating magazines is that you can share your interests, and passions and make it all yours. Each one of your magazines is a personal journey. Like eating Keto? Enjoy cycling? Like-minded people will find you and want to connect.

Community Magazines

Flipboard has a robust community that helps reach a wider undiscovered audience. One of the best ways to grow your profile is to leverage the Flipboard community. Do this by joining group magazines or starting your own. These topical magazines are run by users wanting to build their community. Generally, they are willing to include you.
Creating A Flipboard Group MagazineCreating A Flipboard Group Magazine

Benefits

  1. Community magazines help grow your profile. Your content is likely to be shown and shared by others in the community.
  2. Itā€™s a great networking opportunity. The Flipboard community is warm and inviting and usually eager to share. You can build partnerships and friendships. Over the years I have enjoyed meeting many people all over the world.
  3. Everyone knows how hard it is to grow your Flipboard following. You have a chance to do this by collaborating.

Negatives

  1. Some community magazines are saturated with content. Monitoring relevant information is hard for busy curators. Extra-large magazines can be overwhelming. Thatā€™s why the selection process is critical.
  2. Some collaborators may not understand magazine etiquette. You do have to be very specific when inviting contributors to your magazines.

Best Practices

  1. Join a magazine run by a high-profile Flipboard user and you will gain lots of visibility. Your content will be seen. This magazine is likely to trigger the Flipboard algorithm.
  2. Establish your authority by sharing your content. I always learn from your flips and enjoy reflipping.
  3. Set rules for your magazines to avoid flips that are irrelevant. Encourage everyone to stay on topicā€”post guidelines in the ā€œNotesā€ option for imagery, content, and magazine etiquette.
  4. Reach out to the Flipboard User Group to find collaborators for your magazines.

By sharing to a Flipboard community magazine, you share your knowledge and build valuable connections.

All this and, donā€™t forget toā€¦

Monitor Analytics: Use Flipboardā€™s analytics tools or Google Analytics to monitor performance.

Keep those Magazines Fresh: Regularly update your magazines with new content to keep them active and relevant.

Happy Flipping!

I started using the @Flipboard app a few days ago. I could find a profile of the Aeon Magazine (aeon.co) and the Psyche Magazine (psyche.co), digital magazines I usually like.

After a few likes and articles I've read, I've liked some suggestions I've received so far. I don't know what their algorithm is, but I like the interface and to get some reading suggestions based on my preferences. I could also easily find other digital media I didn't know about.

This is something I believe we could do better in apps like Mastodon and the like, but it seems that just the idea of an algorithm is daunting, I suppose due to the abuse of other platforms whose main goal is to profit via people's addiction to the screen.

A well-designed and transparent machine learning algorithm could be used to show us some potential benefits we can have, not only the harm several of us know and want to keep at bay.

P. S. it became a thread 1/

I opened #Mastodon and suddenly Iā€™m reading posts about the Apple event from #Threads, #Flipboard, Microdotblog, #Medium, and even Mastodon ā˜ŗļø. All in one place! The #Fediverse and the #ActivityPub protocol are mind-blowing. What a time to be alive!

Behold the magic of the fediverse! In the Flipboard app, you can now follow these cybersecurity experts and journalists from the Mastodon community:

I just found out I can follow WordPress.com blogs on Flipboard if they're connected to the fediverse!!

Great video by @vladcampos@mastodon.social!

I agree that #Flipboard is one of the unique players in the #Fediverse. I also see them as a potential central hub for news & a contender to #Google News & #Apple News.

šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ Flipboard is significantly improving our Fediverse experience šŸ“ŗ youtu.be/41q5LBXJlGc via @vladcampos@flipboard.com

Random unrelated note: I noticed that @Flipboard has not yet activated #ActivityPub for their main account on Flipboard: flipboard.com/@flipboard

I believe tech oriented news outlets & opine sites have activated #ActivityPub on their #Threads account.

Examples include:

šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @theinformation
šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @postopinions
šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @techcrunch

The more ā€œtraditionalā€ news outlets use #Flipboard (who unlike Threads does not throttle political news). Examples include:

šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @bloomberg
šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @KyivIndependent
šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @time
šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @politico
šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ @quartz
