News and Politics are two of the most followed and read topics on Flipboard, and with the U.S. election just a few weeks away, we have a new feature to help you keep up with the day’s leading stories.
Now you can follow people from social networks in the fediverse, like Mastodon and Threads, so you can get your daily dose of news and political commentary from journalists and experts, alongside content from your favorite publishers.
Here’s a look at some of the people you can follow on Flipboard:
- Joseph Biden, President of the United States
- Ian Bremmer, political scientist and founder of Eurasia Group
- George Conway, conservative legal expert and co-founder of The Lincoln Project
- David French, legal expert and New York Times columnist
- Katie Harbath, public policy expert and CEO of Anchor Change
- Steve Herman, Voice of America’s chief national correspondent
- Molly Jong-Fast, host of the podcast Fast Politics and journalist at Vanity Fair
- Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States
- Joy Reid, host of The Reidout on MSNBC
- Olivia Troye, American national security expert
Here’s how you can find and follow them on Flipboard:
- Explore — Select the Search icon in the bottom navigation and check out the new Fediverse tab for a list of people to follow that post about a wide range of topics, including news and politics. Swipe left to the News tab for more accounts to follow, plus you’ll find editorial features and publishers to follow too.
- Search — Select the Search icon and type in the name or handle of the account you’d like to follow. You will see results in the new Fediverse Accounts section in All, Social and Profiles tabs.
Once you’ve followed accounts from Threads, Mastodon or other platforms in the fediverse, you will see their new posts in the Fediverse Activity carousel in your For You feed. If there is a profile that you never want to miss a post from, add their profile to the top of your Home carousel so you can easily keep up on their social sharing. (Note: The Fediverse Activity carousel will only update when there is a new post from a followed account.)
If your Flipboard account is already federated, you’ve got a few more features to enjoy:
For one, in addition to being able to follow accounts from the fediverse, you’ll also be able to comment on and like their posts. Having a federated account fully opens up your Flipboard experience and enables you to seamlessly interact with people across the fediverse.
And while you’ve been able to see your fediverse activity in your Flipboard notifications panel, now you’ll be able to follow and interact with people directly from this experience, making it easier to build connections. For example, if someone follows your profile in the fediverse, you can follow them back from Flipboard — it’s all interconnected.
These features are only available via the latest versions of Flipboard’s iOS and Android apps. And if you’re not federated on Flipboard but all this news is making you wish you were, you can request to federate your account here.
We hope you find new people to follow and inspiring content to explore. Also, be sure to follow The News Desk and The Politics Desk (if you aren’t already) for curated stories from Flipboard’s editors.
Thanks for keeping up with all the Flipboard and fediverse news through our blog. You can download the Flipboard app in the App Store and Google Play Store for free. Personalize it for the stories you’re interested in and curate your favorite articles, videos and podcasts into your own Flipboard Magazines.

Instagram and Threads moderation is out of control
"On Threads, the topic of “Threads Moderation Failures” is trending. Some users complain their accounts are being deleted or restricted for linking to articles with controversial topics. Meta is currently banning and restricting users on a hair trigger."

Instagram and Threads moderation is out of control
Instagram and Threads users are complaining about poor moderation that’s deleting accounts and posts. Instagram head Adam Mosseri says he’s “looking into it.”Umar Shakir (The Verge)
More precisely, this is an initiative by @evanprodromou , @ohmallory and @tomcoates .
On their website, they're bragging about "industry support" (sic) by, and "advisors" (sic) from, #Meta and others.
Once again, this makes it clear that some people still allow that "industry" to live as their reference and benchmark in their heads.
Implicitly devaluing what can and should be created without interference by that "industry", and making it seem as if such "support" or "advice" is necessary for some kind of weird "validation" by the adults™. Their footer (see screenshot) merely lists their own Fediverse account - plus their accounts on #X (yes) and #Threads.
It's only a question of time when a few of these "advisors" will be proudly announced as new members "serving" on the team.

Brutal lessons of 1984 #nuclear bomb drama #Threads

"One of the most terrifying programmes ever shown on British television, Threads is the nuclear #apocalypse drama-documentary that continues to haunt people’s nightmares 40 years on. Ahead of a rare new showing on the BBC, here’s a look at how the drama still has the potential to terrify people.
"First broadcast on 23 September 1984, anyone who tuned in to BBC Two on that Sunday evening would experience a bleak and unforgettable depiction of a massive nuclear bomb attack on a British city and its aftermath.
"It was a nightmare scenario that was all too plausible in an era of heightened tension between the West and the then Soviet Union.
"Rarely seen on television since its first broadcast, it's being shown again on BBC Four and iPlayer on 9 October."

Having my $HOME
on #NFS, I'm sometimes annoyed by lots of applications "freezing" when there's some issue with the NFS server. I just decided I'll try to prevent this in #Xmoji.
Now, how to do that? Nonblocking mode (which I use for sockets etc) doesn't do anything for regular files, they're always "ready to read/write". Still, actually reading or writing might block your thread. Then there's #POSIX #aio. From what I found, this has issues in real implementations, e.g. #FreeBSD uses kernel workers for implementing it, which are limited, and also doesn't even allow it on NFS by default, because it could cause deadlocks. Looking at the #Linux side, there seems to be some platform-specific async I/O implementation in the kernel, but #glibc implements the POSIX aio entirely in userspace... 🤯
Ok, screw all that. I'll do the simple thing and use worker #threads for file I/O calls, should be somewhat easy as I already have a "threadpool" in #poser. I just started doing that in my "filewatcher" in case it needs to use stat()

When using stat() for watching a file and poser's threadpool is running, do the stat() call on a worker thread to prevent stalling the main thread on possible I/O issues.GitHub

My theory is that the whole purpose behind Threads is to mine all this text and sentiment analysis to train Llama - Meta’s own LLM.
Facebook is passé, Instagram is all about photos & videos with little text. The posts & comments on Threads are a goldmine when it comes to real time data to train a LLM.
And yes I’m on here but only to promote the *real* Fediverse & other FOSS projects. Feel free to take that 🤖

My fellow chickens:
If we do NOT allow the fox to sit down with us and help us draw up the blueprints for our upcoming coop renovation, then can we really claim to be a welcoming and inclusive community?
Shame on anyone who wants to outright exclude the fox. Especially since the fox has some great ideas for how we can make this place useful and accessible for all our canine and lupine brethren. I thought we were champions for diversity!
(unfortunately I am not at liberty to disclose how much of this chicken feed was provided by the fox)
“As months go by, incidents where Threads consistently failed to uphold its understood promise of a better-moderated Twitter-like platform have added up. Today, for many non-white, non-straight, non-male users, it is a repulsive social media experience, where their voices are silenced and where hate speech offenders who target them go unpunished.”
