I suppose now is as good a time as any to talk about nuclear weapons.

First, let's talk about generalities.

Russia is losing a lot in Ukraine right now. They are burning through tanks, guns, etc., at an alarming rate. Worse, they are burning through enough Russian lives to have a large impact on the Russian population for a long time.

If Putin were ever going to use nukes, he would have done so already. While I cannot say for certain why he has not, you should know that there is a long…

A test was conducted at the height of the Cold War. The results of the test: if the president orders an all-out launch, only around 10% of the nuclear weapons would actually deploy.

Again, if you go look at what I described above, you will be able to see that the system is designed to produce results like this. This test result should surprise no one who understands how the launch commands work.

Anyway, I legitimately think Trump is crazy enough to order this.

Given that the military itself has been calling the current war “Operation Epstein Fury,” I think it is safe to say that if Trump gives the order, the number of nuclear weapons to actually deploy will be far below 10%.

I would not expect Donald Trump to understand ANY of the above, but this information is probably worth knowing.

It is a small comfort, I know, but hopefully, it is a comfort for you.

Iran war expands to dozen countries in 72 hours

Just 72 hours after the U.S. and Israel began bombing Iran, the war has already consumed nearly the entire Middle East, reached the gates of Europe...

The sheer geographic scope of the war is staggering — directly involving at least 11 countries, disrupting the global flow of oil and gas, and rattling markets worldwide.

Wow. Just got a dismissive, "everyone's doing 'AI' so we're gonna keep letting it enshittify our product" reply from a social media scheduler I've recommended in the past.

Needless to say, I won't be recommending them again. Ugh.

Hype for the Future 122D: Cumberland Gap

Introduction

In the modern context of the United States of America, the Cumberland Gap has traditionally been associated with Appalachian settlers and is situated at the western edge of the modern Commonwealth of Virginia, now traversed by United States Route 58 between the Ewing area of Virginia and Claiborne County, Tennessee. The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park also contains territory in Bell and Harlan Counties in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, largely within close proximity to the state line with Virginia and containing the City of Middlesboro in the area.

Historical Context

Largely associated with Dr. Thomas Walker, the Cumberland Gap has been a historically significant source of Appalachian pride and settlement, including, but not limited to, within the areas and general vicinities of the region. Many of the areas have been descended from settlers traversing the Appalachians previously via the Great Wagon Road; however, select additional groups may have pushed westward from the distinct Tidewater culture of the Commonwealth. Apart from Thomas Walker, Daniel Boone has also been identified as a significant historical figure in the general region before continuing to the northwest.

Supreme Court sides with Catholic parents against California on student gender notification — for now

The U.S. Supreme Court temporarily handed California a major loss related to the liberal state's scheme to advance the transgender agenda in public schools.

In a 6-3 ruling on Monday, the court reinstated a lower court order that blocked the California notification policies after the Thomas More Society filed a lawsuit at the behest of a group of Catholic parents.

'California built a wall of secrecy between parents and their own children, and the Supreme Court just tore it down.'

California state law prohibits rules requiring teachers and other school officials to notify parents if their children change their personal pronouns or gender expression at school.

The Thomas More Society issued a statement praising the temporary ruling.

"The Court found that California's secret transition regime likely violates parents' rights under both the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment and the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment," the statement reads.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta argued in favor of the California policies in 2023.

"By enacting policies that forcibly out students against their own wishes, school districts violate these fundamental protections and risk breaching their obligation to serve these and all students equally," he wrote.

"Research shows that protecting a transgender student's ability to make choices about how and when to inform others is critical to their well-being," reads a statement from Bonta's office, "as transgender students are exposed to high levels of harassment and mistreatment at school and in their communities when those environments are not supportive of their gender identity."

"No more can bureaucrats secretly facilitate a child's gender transition while shutting out parents," said Thomas More Society Executive Vice President Peter Breen.

"California built a wall of secrecy between parents and their own children, and the Supreme Court just tore it down," he added. "This groundbreaking ruling will protect parents' rights to raise their children as they see fit for years to come."

Pakidge Watch. It was supposed to arrive today. Auspost has revised that to tomorrow. And now another message telling me that the thing has arrived in Australia. As they told me three days ago that the thing was in Melbourne, this was a bit of a surprise.

In summary, the message I'm taking from this is that I don't know what's going on and neither do they.

"By conventional thinking, Donald Trump’s tariff strategy is a failure: he sidestepped Congress, chose a dubious legal rationale to do it, and now the tariffs have been struck down by the Supreme Court, putting his entire trade agenda at risk. But that’s only one way to look at it.

Looked at another way, Trump’s tariffs were a bold and creative way to kick-start his agenda in an ongoing era of congressional gridlock. Because of the arcane workings of the US legal system, it has taken an entire year for the Supreme Court to get around to striking them down. In that year, as they wound through court after appeal after oral argument, the tariffs have been in place, and they have been arguably one of the most transformational policies of Trump’s entire presidency.

To be clear, they have not been transformational in anything approaching the way that Trump actually intended them to be. The tariffs have not revived US manufacturing; in fact, all evidence suggests they have been the latest major blow to that ailing sector, which has shed thousands of jobs every month for nearly the entire past year.

Likewise, they may have reshaped the global economic order, but not in ways that have benefited the United States. Outrage over the tariffs — their confusing and arbitrary nature, their indiscriminate punishment of both allies and foes, their use as a tool of political meddling, and their igniting of a trade war with China that Trump had to swiftly and embarrassingly back down from — has, in no particular order: weakened US global standing and pushed key security partners away; hastened efforts at de-dollarization; frayed the global alliances that have helped underwrite US power
(...)
Why, then, would progressive elected officials ever emulate what Trump has done here, given how counterproductive it has been to both his domestic agenda and his foreign policy? Let us count the ways."
