I had to say goodbye to my closest companion today.
Riley entered my life in 2008. I still remember that day. I found her on Craigslist, paid a $60 "rehoming fee", and she sat on my lap as I drove home with my new puppy. I was young and broke, living alone, and could barely afford my bills. It was an irresponsible decision to get a dog at that point in life, but I'm so glad that I was able to make it work.
She was a mix of two retrievers: Her mother was a chocolate lab and her father was a golden retriever. Somehow all of their puppies were black.
I had some experience with dogs before her, but I did not know about the amount of affection that retrievers are capable of. As I was getting to know her, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she loved hugs so much, she even initiated them! Literally the sweetest dog I've ever met.
She was very smart. I was able to teach her most of her tricks in like ~10 mins each, while heating up frozen pizzas or whatever cheap garbage I ate back then.
She was the most consistent part of my bumpy path in life. She has been with me through tough breakups, my parents' deaths, career changes, and many other ups and downs that come with adulthood.
She's also the oldest retriever I've ever met. She would have been 17 years old next week.
We were together until her last breath. With my hand on her chest, I felt her final heartbeat.
And I will remember her until mine.
Riley was such a good girl.
JD Vance refers to Sen. Alex Padilla as 'José Padilla' in remarks blasting Democrats during L.A. visit
José Padilla was convicted on charges of supporting al Qaeda after he was initially accused of planning a "dirty bomb" attack in the U.S. He was eventually sentenced to 21 years in prison.
JD Vance bashed Democrats at the state, local and national levels Friday during his visit to Los Angeles, accusing top California officials of encouraging violent protesters and Sen. Alex Padilla, whom he referred to as "José Padilla," of engaging in "political theater."
“I was hoping José Padilla would be here to ask a question. But, unfortunately, I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn’t the theater, and that’s all it is,” Vance said. “It’s pure political theater. These guys show up. They want to be captured on camera doing something.”
Vance's comments referred to an incident last week in which federal law enforcement agents handcuffed Padilla after he interrupted a news conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Padilla was forcibly removed from the event but not arrested.

The United Kingdom government has just published draft legislation seeking to “reform” key disability-related aspects of its complex social security system. While the government claims its moves “will protect the most vulnerable,” in reality its plans to cut £4.5 billion in disability-linked benefits by 2030 will have a devastating impact on people’s rights. The government’s own analysis shows that up to 800,000 people will no longer be eligible to receive PIP and that the changes could lead to 200,000 more people (50,000 of them children) in poverty by 2030. Organizations working on social security and disability rights, including Citizens Advice, the Disability Charities Consortium, and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, have warned of the poverty the cuts will create.
Where will cuts to sickness and disability benefits fall hardest?

Sandy got a bath today! I do not expect her to be this white and clean the next time I see her lol
She got crazy zoomies after her bath, rolled in the dirt, and ran around the round pen for a few minutes before she wore herself out. She had a great time and lots of people really liked seeing her enjoying herself like that lol. This pic was taken a few hours later after she dried completely and I did her braids and brushed her.
She got really spicy when I tried to clean one of her back hooves and almost kicked me in the head. I gave her a lil smack on the butt (not hard at all) and yelled at her and she stopped misbehaving and let me clean her hoof. I think she might have a little bit of arthritis in that leg and that's what had her so uncomfortable until I was able to get her foot held and supported properly. If she continues to show that discomfort, I'll get some horse arthritis gel to try out.

GrapheneOS vs LineageOS vs iodéOS
GrapheneOS vs LineageOS vs iodéOS
According to Comparison of Android-based Operating Systems, GrapheneOS seems to be better than LineageOS and iodéOS in every aspect.
I'm wondering if there is any downside of GrapheneOS. What am I giving up for using GrapheneOS instead of LineageOS and iodéOS (besides GrapheneOS only support pixel)?
In terms of privacy, security, customizability and functionality, which OS would you recommend and on what device would you recommend using it?
Answered questions
- Does LineageOS supports muti profile like GrapheneOS (I thought all AOSP supports multiprofile feature)
- yes lineageos.org/Introducing-the-…
- Does LineageOS supports full device encryption using some open source app? (like veracrypt)
- @https://lemmy.world/u/who@feddit.org Yes, full-device encryption is built in to Android these days.
- Can LineageOS supports Sandboxed Google Play with some tweaks?
- no
Some questions
- If there is backdoor planted in pixel (which in my opinion is very likely), then I guess the “risk of an adversary gaining physical access to the phone” is quite equal for both of OS?
- lemmy.world/u/upstroke4448@lem… - It is highly unlikely there is a backdoor in the Pixel. It’s just not worth the risk for Google. Not only are the phones highly scrutinized by experts but Google has a million other legal ways to get info off your phone for 99% of users who use the stock OS.
- @benjaminoakes lemmy.world/u/benjaminoakes (how do I @ another user in lemmy???) and I qoute "Graphene is likely to run into issues soon. They were relying on the AOSP source tree including Pixel-specific files. Google isn’t releasing those anymore, so GrapheneOS would have to reverse engineer or extract the needed files somehow."
- should I be concerned about this issue? Will it affect my experience in the next 5 years ? (I usually update my device in 5 year cycle)
thanks a million

GrapheneOS is better in principle, but it requires that you (directly or indirectly) give money to Google and depend on Google-controlled hardware, both of which are dealbreakers for some people.
GrapheneOS also depends on hardware support files from Google, which are no longer readily available, making its future unclear.
LineageOS supports a greater variety of devices. The privacy/hardening features aren't as strong as GrapheneOS, but many people find it good enough when:
- Google Play Services are not installed
- Commercial apps are not installed (open-source apps from F-Droid are the usual alternative)
- There is little risk of an adversary gaining physical access to the phone
ManyThanks!
I still have a few questions:
- Does LineageOS supports muti profile like GrapheneOS (I thought all AOSP supports multiprofile feature)
- Can LineageOS supports Sandboxed Google Play with some tweaks?
- Does LineageOS supports full device encryption using some open source app? (like veracrypt on windows)
- If there is backdoor planted in pixel (which in my opinion is very likely), then I guess the “risk of an adversary gaining physical access to the phone” is quite equal for both of OS?
- I don't know, but according to this page, it seems there is some kind of profile support. I assume it's part of the Android Open Source Project.
- (Good thing I noticed that you edited your comment to insert this question.) I am not aware of an effective Google Play sandbox from any OS other than GrapheneOS. It doesn't affect me either way, since I don't use Google services.
- Storage encryption is built in to Android these days. I don't remember whether the latest version does it with file-based encryption or full-device encryption. (Both have been used in the past.)
- It depends on who your adversary is. For example, a Google employee or a government might have remote access to a back door planted in a Pixel, but not to your boot loader. On the other hand, a TSA employee might be able to pwn your phone if granted physical access, but unable to do anything remotely. Pixels are generally more resistant to to physical access attacks because they allow user-supplied keys and boot loader re-locking, but there are companies that sell tools aiming to bypass even these protections, so I wouldn't bet my life on them.

BBC pulls Gaza medics documentary due to impartiality concerns - BBC News
The [documentary] production company's founder, Ben de Pear, said earlier this week the BBC had "utterly failed" and that journalists were "being stymied and silenced".BBC News understands the decision to shelve the documentary was taken on Thursday, following public comments by De Pear at the Sheffield Documentary Festival, and another of the film's directors, journalist Ramita Navai, who appeared on Radio 4's Today discussing the war in Gaza.
Navai told the programme Israel had "become a rogue state that's committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing and mass murdering Palestinians". Israel has denied accusations of war crimes and genocide in Gaza.
TLDR: BBC refuses to run documentary about doctors in Gaza they comissioned because someone involved it is says Israel is committing ethnic cleansing. I think this is one of the most obvious examples on how biased the BBC is towards this situation.

Happy 2nd Birthday Ani.Social! (+ PieFed announcement)
Happy 2nd birthday! o(≧∇≦o)
It's June 21 which means Ani.Social turns another year older! Thanks to everyone who has stuck around and to all the newcomers this month! Unfortunately, I never really tracked our stats but the last birthday post mentioned that we were just a bit under 1000 users and now we're at 1600 with 180+ active users per month! But this is a federated platform, so we have users from all over the Fediverse participating in our communities!
I partially started Ani.Social as a kind of personal research project. Learning about the Fediverse as a practical approach toward a democratic social media is really interesting. For the past four years of my life, I have also been generally obsessed with thinking about and consuming Japanese media more analytically and theoretically. So combining that and the Fediverse, Ani.Social was born!
It's been really interesting to learn about how different people consume this so-called "Japanese media" and what kinds of discourse are produced, especially from people who willingly spend time on alternative spaces like the Fediverse.
With that said...
PieFed announcement!
For the past month, I have been testing PieFed, another Reddit-like Fediverse platform. I think it has a lot of potential and its been receiving a lot of development efforts from the Lemmy community lately. Compared to Lemmy, it's both ahead and behind depending on which areas you look. What I particularly like about PieFed is how experimental it is, and that's sort of what I need to further my research.
Right now, PieFed has flairs, spoilers, polls, topics, feeds (like multireddits), better mod and reporting tools.
You can test the future Piefed instance at pt.nyaa.social/. The tentative instance domain is Nyaa.Social and will likely share themes with Ani.Social but hopefully it'll be broader than just "anime and its related industries".
I would like to know what other people think, and what kind of ideas we can explore in Nyaa.Social. I don't think it should simply be "an alternative to Lemmy" or "an alternative to Ani.Social." It's a great opportunity to do things differently, and see what works and what doesn't.
There's no official launch date for the new PieFed instance but the earliest you can expect it is July 7. In the meantime, I would like to gather as much feedback on what kind of platform this new instance could be.
Here are a few screenshots of what the place looks like at the moment:
I should mention that Ani.Social is not going anywhere! It will continue to run and it will still be my top priority to make it a stable and easy experience for everybody even after the PieFed instance launches.
Thanks again mods, posters, commenters, donors, lurkers, and everyone else! If you have questions, feel free to ask! Enjoy the summer season! (\^o\^)/

Dual Boot dilemma
Hello there,
I just want to buy a new gaming system, laptop, because I want to be mobile. There is only one game I cant give up that is league of legends. So I'm searching a manufactor, which can handle dual boot perfectly. I mean everytime I boot into windows and want to reboot into linux again, so my entry is gone (refind, systems and grub). Maybe there is a brand which separate two OS Hardware wise or has a BIOS espacially for such a case?

A woman tried to call her mom in Iran. A robotic voice answered the phone
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — When Ellie, a British-Iranian living in the United Kingdom, tried to call her mother in Tehran, a robotic female voice answered instead.“Alo? Alo?” the voice said, then asked in English: “Who is calling?” A few seconds passed.
“I can’t heard you,” the voice continued, its English imperfect. “Who you want to speak with? I’m Alyssia. Do you remember me? I think I don’t know who are you.”
Ellie, 44, is one of nine Iranians living abroad — including in the U.K and U.S. — who said they have gotten strange, robotic voices when they attempted to call their loved ones in Iran since Israel launched airstrikes on the country a week ago.
They told their stories to The Associated Press on the condition they remain anonymous or that only their first names or initials be used out of fear of endangering their families.
Five experts with whom the AP shared recordings said it could be low-tech artificial intelligence, a chatbot or a pre-recorded message to which calls from abroad were diverted.
It remains unclear who is behind the operation, though four of the experts believed it was likely to be the Iranian government while the fifth saw Israel as more likely.

‘Martyrdom or Bust:’ Texas Man Caught Plotting Terror Attack Through Roblox Chats
Full text to avoid paywall:
The FBI has accused a Texas man, James Wesley Burger, of planning an Islamic State-style terrorist attack on a Christian music festival and talking about it on Roblox. The feds caught Burger after another Roblox user overheard his conversations about martyrdom and murder and tipped them off. The feds said that when they searched Burger’s phone they found a list of searches that included “ginger isis member” and “are suicide attacks haram in islam.”
According to charging documents, a Roblox player contacted federal authorities after seeing another player called “Crazz3pain” talking about killing people. Screenshots from the server and included in the charging documents show Roblox avatars with beards dressed in Keffiyehs talking about dealing a “greivoius [sic] wound upon followers of the cross.”
“The witness observed the user of Crazz3pain state they were willing, as reported by the Witness, to ‘kill Shia Musilms at their mosque,” court records said. “Crazz3pain and another Roblox user[…]continued to make violent statements so the witness left the game.”
The witness stayed off of Roblox for two days and when they returned they saw Crazz3pain say something else that worried them, according to the court filing. “The Witness observed Crazz3pain tell Roblox User 1 to check their message on Discord,” the charging document said. “Roblox User 1 replied on Roblox to Crazz3pain, they should delete the photograph of firearms within the unknown Discord chat, ‘in case it was flagged as suspicious…the firearms should be kept hidden.”
According to the witness, Crazz3pain kept talking about their desire to commit “martyrdom” at a Christian event and that he wanted to “bring humiliation to worshippers of the cross.” The Witness allegedly asked Crazz3pain if the attack would happen at a church service and Crazz3pain told them it would happen at a concert.
Someone asked Crazz3pain when it would happen. “‘It will be months…Shawwal…April,’” Crazz3pain said. Shawwal is the month after Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. The conversations the witness shared with the FBI happened on January 21 and 23, 2025.
Roblox gave authorities Crazz3pain’s email address, name, physical address, and IP address and it all pointed back to James Wesley Burger. The FBI searched Burger’s home on February 28 and discovered that someone in his family had put on a keylogger on the laptop he used to play Roblox and that they’d captured a lot of what he’d been typing while playing the game. They turned over the records to the feds.
“The safety of our community is among our highest priorities. In this case, we moved swiftly to assist law enforcement’s investigation before any real-world harm could occur and investigated and took action in accordance with our policies. We have a robust set of proactive and preventative safety measures designed to help swiftly detect and remove content that violates our policies," a spokesperson for Roblox told 404 Media. "Our Community Standards explicitly prohibit any content or behavior that depicts, supports, glorifies, or promotes terrorist or extremist organizations in any way. We have dedicated teams focused on proactively identifying and swiftly removing such content, as well as supporting requests from and providing assistance to law enforcement. We also work closely with other platforms and in close collaboration with safety organizations to keep content that violates our policies off our platform, and will continue to diligently enforce our policies.”
Burger’s plan to kill Christians was allegedly captured by the keylogger. “I’ve come to conclude it will befall the 12 of Shawwal aa/And it will be a music festival /Attracting bounties of Christians s/In’shaa’allah we will attain martyrdom /And deal a grevious [sic] wound upon the followers of the Cross /Pray for me and enjoin yourself to martyrdom,” he allegedly typed in Roblox, according to court records.
The FBI then interviewed Burger in his living room and he admitted he used the Crazz3pain account to play Roblox. The feds asked him about his alleged plan to kill Christians at a concert. Burger said it was, at the time, “mostly a heightened emotional response,” according to the court records.
Burger also said that the details “became exaggerated” but that the goal “hasn’t shifted a bit,” according to the court records. He said he wanted to “[G]et the hell out of the U.S.” And if he can’t, “then, martyrdom or bust.”
He said that his intention with the attack “is something that is meant to or will cause terror,” according to the charging document. When the FBI agent asked if he was a terrorist, Burger said, “I mean, yeah, yeah. By, by the sense and … by my very own definition, yes, I guess, you know, I would be a terrorist.”
When authorities searched his iPhone, they discovered two notes on the phone that described how to avoid leaving behind DNA and fingerprints at a crime scene. A third note appeared to be a note explaining the attack, meant to be read after it occured.
The list of previous searches on his iPhone included “Which month is april in islam,” “Festivals happening near me,” “are suicide attacks haram in islam,” “ginger isis member,” “lone wolf terrorists isis,” and “can tou kill a woman who foesnt[sic] wear hijab.”
Burger has been charged with making violent threats online and may spend time in a federal prison if convicted. This is not the first time something like this has happened on Roblox. The popular children’s game has been a popular spot for extremist behavior, including Nazis and religious terrorists, for years now. Last year, the DOJ accused a Syrian man living in Albanian of using Roblox to coordinate a group of American teenagers to disrupt public city council Zoom meetings.

The fact that they add bookmarks into my firefox and Manjaro bootscreen at start gave me a strange feeling... Specially because this happend after the bios bootscreen hack. And I know this is not related but it still gave me strange gut feeling and always follow your guts !
Happy EndeavourOS user !

They managed to differentiate Manjaro to it's own entry after all. It's Arch based too.

They had none to very little experience with anything Linux before, their previous win11 installs just over bloated and the copilot bullshit pushed them over. Both (indie/non-pop shooters) gamers btw.
This is the year of linux.

They tend to make sure stuff that gamers care about are up to date and working.
You'll likely need the newest kernels and software packages if you're running the latest gen of GPU and/or CPU, to get the most out of them, or even get them to work at all.

in reply to Danitos • • •Some of it, yeah.
All a distro is, really, is a preset. It comes with some package manager or other, along with a collection of pre-installed packages.
The reason one chooses one distro over another, is because it's closer to what you need. I could install arch, and spend a day setting it up exactly the way I like. Or, I could start with Endeavour, and get to essentially the same state in an hour.
I'm familiar enough with linux that I could strong-arm any install into doing whatever I need, but at times, to get from preset A to preset B, it's faster to just start over from a known preset that's closest to what I want.
Rolling releases typically mean the software available is recent, but that's only one aspect of what your starting point could look like.
"Gaming" distros are going to be a preset that contains a bunch of configurations, defaults and software, that gamers typically care about. That steam is usually already installed, is an example of one such thing. The same way my mention of GPU and CPU support is only an example.
Maybe instead of "They tend to make sure stuff that gamers care about are up to date and working" I should have phrased it "They tend to make sure things that gamers care about are easy to set up and supported, if not even ready to go, out of the box".

It took a little less than three years from when I first switched for him to follow.
My sister is also on linux, has been since she took my gaming laptop as her own, and she never felt a need to switch it back to windows.

in reply to MentalEdge • • •That’s actually similar to how I got one of my friends on it. I got a Framework 16 about a year ago and installed Linux on it with a very customized KDE DE and he seemed pretty interested in it whenever I brought it with me whenever we hung out. Offered him a hand in learning more about Linux, how to install, customization, different distributions, Steam Proton, etc. About 7-8 months after and he has a Framework 13 with Fedora Linux.
My other friends are just stuck on the gaming side of things sadly. The games that I dropped when I made the switch I really didn’t care a whole lot about anyways. Not the case with my other friends though.
However, I have my brother and my parents using it for their laptops as they don’t need it for anything else but a web browser and an office suite and over the last year or so there have been no complaints!

We can also get the Steam OS on different hardwares, just like the Lenovo Legion Go S

back then, the argument was about "venda casada" (no idea how to translate this). its when you buy something and you are forced to buy something else on their terms to make it work. they ruled that manufacturers can't force you to buy a windows license from them when you are already paying for a computer from them.
instead of selling it without an os, many of them offered linux as an option and passed the savings on to the customer, not unlike some manufacturers are doing in the us nowadays. most people got it with the intention of reformatting the machines with pirated windows for free, but many tried it and stuck with linux. we got a lot of adoption for a while there.

Microsoft/Google would shit all over any retailer that dared to do that today.
That said, Bestbuy did have an OS2/Warp on the floor decades ago.
I think SteamOS will have a solid chance.
We need a distro that has a 0% chance to brick on a graphics driver update. That can flawlessly do a major release update without breaking things and can run GOG, Steam, Epic.

in reply to Tim_Bisley • • •Okay, well to balance that anecdotal information with some more, let me put some of those bad points listed in context with what my experience has been on Debian 12 Stable with an RTX 3090.
Somewhat true, but protonDB is so accurate that I think I have only had to trial and error 1 or 2 games ever. Downloading multiple proton versions isn't a big problem as they aren't too large, and I have only ever needed either the latest stable release, or the experimental release. As far as actual game compatibility goes, when I moved to Linux I looked up every game in my steam library in proton DB to see what I was working with. The result was that:
95 of my games ran natively on Linux. 31 of my games were rated platinum. 73 of my games were rated gold. 12 were rated silver. 3 were rated as bronze. 3 were noted as unplayable.
You have to add 1 repository for the drivers and then it upgrades when you upgrade as normal. This is like a 2 step process of editing a text file and then running one command. I have never had to use gamescope.
Performance on some games is better through proton and this is true even with my NVIDIA card. This is largely because where you lose performance on emulation, typically you are making up for it in leaps and bounds because Linux is not running 1000 telemetry processes and stuff in the background like Windows does. I have only played one game where the performance was noticeably worse. I don't use gamescope at all. As far as I'm aware DLSS/HDR work fine (running armored core VI on ultra graphics for example looks and runs great and the settings seem to be enabled). As I said before, I only ever had to trial and error 1 or 2 games.
Parts of this statement are just straight up not true. When installing the drivers, you also install the NVIDIA Settings application which does not contain all settings from the NVIDIA control panel, but a subset of them. RTX HDR in the desktop for example does work, but it is just dependent on the window manager. Here is another reddit thread stating as much. I assume the OP of the thread you linked doesn't really know what they are doing. If you want a windows-like experience you probably would be using plasma. Also I'm pretty sure lossless scaling has been a feature in protonGE since 2021, so if you really needed it for a game, you would just install that proton version and use its FSR feature there. I mean, this is stuff that comes back top link when I google for "Lossless scaling linux NVIDIA". The OP really doesn't seem too dedicated to looking up their problems.
My PS5 controller including its haptics work natively on debian. I didn't even have to install any drivers or software for it to work. I just plugged in and started playing. I think it just has to be wired for haptics, or whatever you are using for wireless needs to be capable of supporting the controller and its haptics.
So pretty much all of these issues seem to be related to the OP not really investigating their issues well, or not understanding where to go to change settings, or not understanding how their package manager works.

I have a massive library of various games, and three years in I haven't really come across any cases where I want to tear my hair out.
If ProtonDB says a game doesn't work, you're not gonna tweak your way to having it run. If it says it does, and it didn't run right away with no problems, you can usually just apply the fixes other users have found, and be off playing your game.
In fact things are often simpler than on windows, because all the fixes have been gathered on protondb. While on windows you have to google-fu your way to finding someone on reddit or the steam forums who has the exact same problem, and also figured out and posted the fix.

PS: been playing for years with NVIDIA drivers, including VR games, and sure it's not 100% perfect but neither Windows drivers are. It sure is enough for me to keep on playing (and working) without major issue though. Anyway, gotta play!

I installed openrazer to control my keyboard and the next time I loaded it up only the number keys worked.
I'm not sure what my next steps will be but I'm enjoying it other than this issue, it reminds me of the good old DOS days back when I was a kid.
