No, but I've heard the Invisibles mentioned before being one of someone's favorite comics. I've been wanting to check it out. So, I don't know what they are, but the idea of a reality suit is like a scuba suit or a space suit. In order for something to interact with this or any reality or dimension, you need something that will enable you to do that. If you ever try to take your suit off without doing it the proper way, you immediately cease to exist in this reality. Your suit will, not you.
Sorry for the long reply.
Your definition of this is almost 1 to 1 an explanation of a fiction suit, actually. The only major difference is word choice; specifically choosing reality over fiction. Very interesting that you came to basically the same idea on your own, and I've got a strong feeling that you'll really dig Invisibles if you ever make the time.
And thank you for the long response! You could have just said "nah" and left it at that, so I appreciate knowing you put a little of yourself on it instead. Hope you're having a good one, stranger 😀

There is a difference between what the powers that be allow and what we personally think is okay.
And the person I replied to apparently thinks genocide is okay as long as it hits the right people.
I don't disagree (and I didn't write anything disagreeing with that).
What I added was that we still on average admire nations build on genocide or immoral individuals just because of their wealth and status achieved (& how long lasting & persistent it is).
I never said that a bunch of us don't disagree with genociding anyone. There are always voices like this through the history.
(Tho on that note, not that it's relevant, about the person you replied to - I don't like when ppl use the word 'genocide' for a political party/military group & not something broader, like ethnicity.)
I know you can't just detain people arbitrarily in a free country, but it sucks that they're probably just going to flee back to Israel now that they've learned the lesson that they're not untouchable outside of Israel and the US.
Reminder that the IDF has published guidelines for its troops on how to evade getting arrested by an ICC member state while traveling abroad, which is definitely something a very moral and humane military does.

just because the words "what about..." are used, doesn't make an argument a whataboutism.
a whataboutism deflects from an argument or aims to derail an argument.
what the previous user did was ask for further argumentation about a directly related topic; it's a continuation, not a deflection.
so it's not fallacious, buta legitimate question:
you've banned some propaganda channels (argument is closed at this point), will you now also ban other, similar channels (new, related argument)?
since the previous argument has concluded, because yt has already enforced their views, wether right or wrong, the follow-up question is perfectly legitimate.

Personally, I wouldn't want to live in a country that is committing a genocide - I would leave. At least some people who choose to live in Israel are ok with illegal settlements, bombing children, etc. They self-selected and that is why they are there - some even left the countries where they were born to become settlers. 1st. Only some Christian denominations are fanatically pro Trump.
2nd. They are faithful, of many ethnicities. Jews are an ethnoreligious group, and in fact, while most faiths welcome converts, Judaism makes you jump through loops. Jews don't like to welcome the non ethnically pure. This if you look at the many branches, especially the Yiddish, with their predominance of fair skin, light eyes, blonde or redhead, is very ironic, as the amount of Yiddish women who have jumped beds through history to turn Levantine populations into almost nordic, is staggering, and thus highly hypocritical.
Being a Mastodon Moderator
Being a Mastodon Moderator
People ask me what it’s like to be a moderator. Our discussions reveal that a lot of what we do is a mystery. So, I’m gonna lay it out for you. Specifically about the unique fediverse moderation model, mutual aid, and mental health.
What Fediverse Moderation Looks Like
Centralized networks like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter create rules that please executives and shareholders. Those decision makers don’t have to be ethical—and they rarely are. They obey money. Big money. And big money is never on the side of the people. Big money gets rid of fact checkers, amplifies malicious bigotry, and platforms nazis.
The fediverse is decentralized. That means there isn’t one server for all accounts and it’s not run by one company. It’s a network of servers (or instances), each self-owned/operated. Sometimes that’s one person, but most often is a small team. And each team makes its own rules for moderation. They all communicate symbiotically to create the single social network.
There’s a common theme to the rules. While not universal, the majority of instances focus on ethics and inclusivity. Those who don’t get blocked through a process called “defederation.” This is a global block between instances. It means no one on the blocked server can interact with anyone from the server who moderated it.
This makes the entire fediverse community stronger. At a local level, on our server, we have a process that seems to serve us well.
What Mas.to Moderation Looks Like
There are three moderators on our team and about 185,000 accounts. About 12,000 of those are active monthly. But they’re able to interact with an estimated 12 million total fediverse accounts. So…we have our hands full. But it’s manageable. Our queue is never very long. The baseline process works like this:
- Someone reports a post or an account
- The report shows up in our queue
- One of us reviews the report and either resolves (dismisses) or moderates
- If we moderate, the account receives an email notification with an appeal option
- If they appeal, we see that in our queue with their plea
- One of us reviews the appeal and either accepts or rejects
We also have a house rule that no one can act on an appeal for their own moderation. It’s a good way to keep each other in check. Especially because sometimes we don’t agree. This is okay. We just talk it out together and try to make the best call.
There’s an array of moderation options we use:
- Delete one or more posts
- Limit the account (only their followers will see their account)
- Suspend the account
- Send a warning
- Freeze the account (lock them out)
- Force posts to be flagged as sensitive (blurred)
There are five key things to know about the process…
It’s Hard
No decision is easy, and many decisions aren’t binary. There’s lots of gray area, even with explicit rules. We often receive reports that don’t violate those rules. It’s simply someone saying they don’t like what another person said. We aren’t argument referees, but people expect us to be. If that argument becomes harassment or discrimination, it’s time for intervention. But even that isn’t always straightforward. We Get Some Things Wrong
We’ll sometimes debate for days on a single report. We always do our best to make the right call. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens. We Get Most Things Right
We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see. Things we can’t ever unsee. We’re Targets of Both Love and Hate
We get lots of love, but we get spit on a lot. Some people lose their minds when they’re moderated. They’ll publicly shame us or call for uprisings against us. Quite literally. I’ve even been known to vent about it because it gets exhausting.Moderation Doesn’t End in the Queue
Some moderation is urgent or the severity requires additional action. We report all CSAM content to legal agencies in relevant countries. And with posts containing violent threats. We do our best to track the location of the offender. Then we report IPs/emails to domain registrars and web hosts. It’s also important to note that we don’t moderate reports of ourselves, which actually happens. As of this writing, I’ve been reported five times. All were (objectively) resolved without moderation.
One challenging topic is mutual aid (community economic support).
Mutual Aid
First off, I believe in mutual aid. I don’t trust wealthy people or government systems to inherently take care of people. We need to take care of each other. Good, healthy mutual aid is a beautiful thing. This is the way.
But moderating mutual aid is a conundrum. The posts are from either people in need or scammers, and it’s not always easy to tell which one it is. We want to protect our Mastodon community from the latter. So we have to make judgment calls.
Sometimes it’s obvious, but most of the time we have to do some sleuthing. We analyze the account and related IP addresses. We conduct reverse image searches and research online profiles. It’s detective work.
I’d like to say we always get this right. We don’t. And it breaks our hearts if we make a mistake on this one. But we try to get it right. We really do.
Because we care, all of this has an impact on our mental health. Some negative, some positive.
Negative Impact on Mental Health
Content warning: I don’t details about traumatic content. But I do mention some topics that may be triggering.Much of what we do is routine. But things can get bad, mentally. We take breaks when needed, knowing the others have our back. I’m grateful for this. Because I have definitely needed it.
There are two usual suspects that push the envelope:
- Traumatic content
- Being personally-targeted by people we’ve moderated
Traumatic Content
This section is difficult to discuss. I’ve tried to represent moderators as a whole in the rest of this article. But I’m going to personalize this section. Even though other moderators have shared similar sentiments, I don’t want to speak for anyone else on this.I’ve seen some things. Really, really, really unimaginable things. Things I never wanted to see in my life that are now in my brain. And I’ve brought almost all of them to therapy.
People get reported for obvious things: slurs, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. It’s painful to repeatedly see those words. Even when they’re not directed at me, I hate seeing them. It reminds me of the hate that exists in the world. It muddies the waters while trying to find strength to have even a sliver of optimism about the state of the world. I find myself saying “fuck you, asshole” while moderating these posts.
But there are other reports that stand out. You know these people exist in the world, but when you see them first hand it’s horrifying. CSAM in particular. But also violent threats, especially when used with discrimination.
The words and sentiments alone are hard to moderate. But often there are images. And try as I might, I am unable to shake them.
Targeted Attacks on Moderators
We’re volunteers trying to keep everyone safe, not monsters. And, yet, we get targeted. Sometimes personally. That’s not okay.I’m certain every moderator has a story. Mine is that some people targeted my family. I discovered that some nazis found a photo of my kids from one of my lectures. They posted it to some repugnant forum, engaging in a racist, homophobic, bigoted hate fest.
They got my kids involved. My kids! Why? Because I dared delete a post filled with the same types of attacks against someone of color on Mastodon.
Positive Impact on Mental Health
The upside is that moderation gives me some control.Watching a fascist autocracy unfold before your eyes is terrifying. Everything is collapsing on a massive scale in myriad ways. It’s enough to make a person feel helpless.
While it’s not monumental, I do get to curb some of that fascism through moderation. I get to push buttons with labels that read “delete post” and “suspend.” When some ignorant sociopath is harassing people, I get to wave a magic wand and make them disappear. At least from our corner of Mastodon.
That’s empowering. And meaningful. It does make a difference because I get to silence them. I can’t begin to describe how good that feels. Just a little tiny bit of justice.
We also once helped someone who posted a cry for help. He was talking about ending his life. Someone reported his post to see if we could help, and we did. Every once in a while I check on his account. He’s still there, posting cool stuff. I like to think we played a role in that.
Conclusion
So that’s a firehose of information, but it’s only part of the story. If you read this far, you deserve a cookie. If I could invite you over for one straight out of the oven (I make a mean vegan cookie) I would. For now, keep reporting the bad people and we’ll do the rest. Thanks for taking the time to go on this journey with me.

My mastodon account is on a kind of small instance, and I'd love to be able to report posts directly to the originating instance, without also reporting it to "my" admin. I just don't wasn't then to waste their time locally blocking a clear spam account, that should (and usually will be) removed by the originating instance in a couple hours.

I am afraid, that removal of spam account does not necessarily federate to another instance. On Mastodon activities federate mainly to instances an account, which made/edited/deleted the post, is followed from. (Or an instance can subscribe to relay, which exchanges all activities between all participating instances).
Report always landing to your admin may be something good in light of this...

a remote and uninhabited island located 400 miles from HonoluluMokumanamana sits at the boundary between "'pō,' the darkness, and 'au,' the light." When a Native Hawaiian dies, their soul travels up near Mokumanamana, and after meeting their ancestors there, they potentially get to advance into the great beyond with them in the dark waters west of the island.
okey-doke.
So, uninhabited (at this point means not viable for habitation) and it's a religious site that probably no one goes on a pilgrimage to? Fuckit.
edit: so the people using the downvote button as a disagree button:
What's the problem? If we are going to do this space shit we need places to drop the litter, what's wrong with this place? Is it just because it's Musk and Trump? I'm no fan of either but wouldn't it be better to have this SpaceX trash out in the Pacific instead of off the coast of South Texas where millions of US and Mexican citizens live?
What the fuck? They are literally dumping this shit in the Gulf of Mexico RIGHT NOW.
Why is this shitty little island out in the middle of nowhere a problem?!
Yeah, that's what I'm worried about.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THIS SHITTY LITTLE ISLAND?
And then someone posts the article on here and someone types out a defense “yeah but it’s a garage, its uninhabitable” and then later “WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THIS SHITTY LITTLE ISLAND?” …. You’re getting this right?
Cool. Who's garage do we shit in then?
Because if we're going to shit in a garage we need a garage to shit in. So is that garage in South Texas or out in The Pacific?
basically, no one has stated why this place is not a good place but the Gulf of Mexico is what we're using now so... just keep using it?
You are the first person to articulate WHY you don't want it there, no one else has bothered.
What's the deal with this patch of ocean? Is it special in some other way than NIMBY cloaked in religion?

we should call those laws like that.
wait who doesn't think that america is a Christian nation
Christianity is literally intertwined with like every visible level of the american government

Russian Photographer Gets 16 Years For Sharing Public Soviet Bunker Data
In Vladimir Putin’s Russia, sharing details of publications openly sold in bookstores can result in a 16-year prison sentence.
This has been the fate of Grigory Skvortsov, a 35-year-old photographer and musician from Perm.
Skvortsov was one of thousands across Russia who purchased the 2021 publication Secret Soviet Bunkers by historian Dmitry Yurkov. The book reproduced scores of once secret diagrams of Soviet installations that had recently been declassified.
Some supplementary scans were made available with the book, which Skvortsov purchased. He later shared some of those documents with an unnamed American journalist.
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia has drastically expanded the scope of what can be deemed a "state secret."
In letters to friends, Skvortsov says the Russian authorities opened the case against him in order to hide their own failures in not noticing potentially sensitive information was being freely sold and passed around online.
“I did not have access to state secrets and had no malicious intent," the photographer wrote from detention. “The data was not protected by the state.... These facts are being ignored by the prosecution and the courts, who are treating the case formally, clearly out of fear of repression from the FSB."

if you want to provide an actual argument, better provide the whole argument, instead of basically just saying "you're wrong lol"
what causes it instead?
I know why you got downvoted, but you are right, it's not about tourists, it's about the USA immigrants (the so called expats), since the goverment made changes to privately benefit from all the airbnb shit, we have people earning in dollars, that pay 0 taxes to México and of course the market tries to squeeze out their dollars, rising prices and changing the environment to appeal to those migrants, leaving out and even kicking out the nationals.
People are right to be angry about it, but they are aiming to the wrong part, this was allowed (and boosted) by the past and present administration (even when they were warned about it) to fill their own pockets even if it meant stepping on their own people.
The people in power allow the rich to become richer on the backs of the poor.
“I’m not the problem!” Says the rich man, “it’s those immigrants, whose money I’m taking, who are the problem. Fight amongst yourselves”
This is how demand works. If the population of an area want a Starbucks, they get a Starbucks. I’ve lived in many areas that were cool until they became “cool,” if you catch my meaning. Prices went up and I had to leave. It’s tempting to blame the people who came in and were willing to spend money. But while trying to find the root cause of the problem, they quickly become… Not the problem.
I’d say few people go into a new area and think, gosh I want to make this different. They went there because they wanted to be there. If a Starbucks pops up, they aren’t exactly upset, but they probably could live without it.
The problem is the people who own these places. Those people aren’t the ones protesting. And if you want to think of it from a purely ownership standpoint, the people protesting have no right to complain what the people who own the land want to do with it.
I have no idea what the solution is beyond rent control and price caps. Those two things will keep costs down regardless of tourism, discouraging landowners from changing the area to suit the demand of tourism.
Additionally, preventing foreign companies from establishing their businesses in the region would preserve the local culture. However, as previously mentioned, it is the individuals who own this land—both in a literal and a political sense—who are facilitating this occurrence.

This is not the Israeli military and it's not Hamas, we're told very reliably. It's fighting gangs or fighting families who are trying to get food, and this is born out of desperation for food because they are all starving.
Gunshot wounds like that could also be results from these fights between Palestinians.

Yes, it hurts discoverability. How can you have a community without people?
I'd like to ask it the other way around: How many people would it need until you'd say "Yep, that's a community alright."?
Depends on the search engine you use. I started giving Kagi a try and it has options to increase visibility of fediverse content in your searches.
I'd guess it's a mix of fediverse being a poor fit for ad-oriented SEO and relatively low adoption.

As Urdu is an RTL language, I also want to know if any other contribution is required on the code/styles side, or just completing the translation will finish the job

Hertz Still Can't Keep Track Of Cars, Threatens Reader Who Returned Vehicle On Time - View from the Wing
It seemed like Hertz really got this under control, after bringing in Palantir to help track its rental fleet. So it was pretty jarring to me that a reader recently received the scariest letter than anyone who frequents this blog can get.Gary Leff (View from the Wing)
I've had from Hertz is they just told me to fuck off and didn't give me my reserved vehicle.
And here I thought they just didn't like me... WTF kind of business is this lol

I think it's generally a brilliant solution but there are a couple of problems here:
- The scanner seems to flag fucking everything and charge for minor damage where a human would probably flag it as wear.
- No one is allowed to correct the scanner:
Perturbed by the apparent mistake, the user tried to speak to employees and managers at the Hertz counter, but none were able to help, and all "pointed fingers at the 'AI scanner.'" They were told to contact customer support — but even that proved futile after representatives claimed they "can’t do anything."
Sounds to me like they're just trying to replace those employees. That's why they won't let them interfere.

I'm not sure how you can make the points you make, and still call it a "generally brilliant solution"
The entire point of this system - like anything a giant company like Hertz does - is not to be fair to the customer. The point is to screw the customer over to make money.
Not allowing human employees to challenge the incorrect AI decision is very intentional, because it defers your complaint to a later time when you have to phone customer support.
This means you no longer have the persuasion power of being there in person at the time of the assessment, with the car still there too, and means you have to muster the time and effort to call customer services - which they are hoping you won't bother doing. Even if you do call, CS hold all the cards at that point and can easily swerve you over the phone.
It's all part of the business strategy.
I'm not sure how you can make the points you make, and still call it a "generally brilliant solution"
Because the technology itself is not the problem, it's the application. Not complicated.
Do you hold everything to such a standard?
Stop lights are meant to direct traffic. If someone runs a red light, is the technology not working as it should?
The technology here, using computer vision to automatically flag potential damage, needed to be implemented alongside human supervision - an employee should be able to walk by the car, see that the flagged damage doesn't actually exist, and override the algorithm.
The technology itself isn't bad, it's how hertz is using it that is.
I believe the unfortunate miscommunication here is that when @Ulrich@feddit.org said the solution was brilliant, they were referring to the technology as the "solution", and others are referring to the implementation as a whole as the "solution"
The stop light analogy would require the stop light be doing something wrong not the human element doing something wrong because.
There is no human element to this implantation, it is the technology itself malfunctioning. There was no damage but the system thinks there is damage.
There is no human element to this implantation
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. That's the problem.
There is no human element to this implantation, it is the technology itself malfunctioning. There was no damage but the system thinks there is damage.
Let's make sure we're building up from the same foundation. My assumptions are:
1. Algorithms will make mistakes.
2. There's an acceptable level of error for all algorithms.
3. If an algorithm is making too many mistakes, that can be mitigated with human supervision and overrides.
Let me know if you disagree with any of these assumptions.
In this case, the lack of human override discussed in assumption 3 is, itself, a human-made decision that I am claiming is an error in implementing this technology. That is the human element. As management, you can either go on a snipe hunt trying to find an algorithm that is perfect, or you can make sure that trained employees can verify and correct the algorithm when needed. Instead hertz management chose option 3 - run an imperfect algorithm with absolutely 0 employee oversight. THAT is where they fucked up. THAT is where the human element screwed a potentially useful technology.
I work with machine learning algorithms. You will not, ever, find a practical machine learning algorithm that gets something right 100% of the time and is never wrong. But we don't say "the technology is malfunctioning" when it gets something wrong, otherwise there's a ton of invisible technology that we all rely on in our day to day lives that is "malfunctioning".
Stop light analogy is completely unequivocal
You’re admitting the technology is in fact flawed if you think it needed to be implemented with supervision. An uno reverse is, every set of traffic lights needs a traffic controller to stop drivers running red lights. Unequivocal, right?
Just stop because you’re wrong, lol
You’re admitting the technology is in fact flawed if you think it needed to be implemented with supervision.
You're absolutely right. The technology isn't perfect if it needs to be implemented with supervision, but it can be good enough to have a role in everyday society.
Great examples are self checkout lanes, where there's always an employee watching, and speed cameras, which always have an officer reviewing and signing off on tickets.
An uno reverse is, every set of traffic lights needs a traffic controller to stop drivers running red lights.
Traffic lights are meant to direct traffic. Yet you don't expect them to prevent folks from running red lights. Folks don't expect them to, because that's not their role in their implementation - they are meant to be used alongside folks who will enforce traffic laws, and, maybe in fact, traffic controllers. This is arguably an example of an implementation done right.
This technology is meant to flag car damage. If there was a correct implementation, I would be able to say "folks don't expect them to be perfect, because that's not their role in their implementation - they are meant to be used alongside employees trained to verify damage exists, who can correct the algorithm if needed", but the implementation in this case is sadly bad.
At the end of the day, you will never have a "perfect" computer vision algorithm. But you can have many "good enough" ones, depending on how they're implemented.
The US lacks even the most basic consumer protections it seems.
In Australia, companies still try to give you the run around, but I am extremely confident this wouldn't fly here. Even though I'm not a lawyer.
If you literally can't get a hold of them, they're breaking Australian Consumer Law, that's a slam dunk to charge back the card and dare them to take you to your state's relevant tribunal that hears cases like this. It costs either like $70 to file, you can represent yourself easily, and if you're low-income, it's literally free.
They don't want to waste money on fighting you. If you're confident you're clearly in the right, it's very easy to get a company to back down.
This is a great time to remind everyone to take photos before and after getting a rental car, because otherwise it's your word against them.
You are spot on here. AI is great for sensitivity (noticing potential issues), but terrible for specivity (giving many false positives).
The issue is how AI is used, not the AI itself. They don't have a human in the checking process. They should use AI scanner to check the car. If it's fine, then you have saved the employee from manually checking, which is a time-consuming process and prone to error.
If the AI spots something, then get an employee to look at the issues highlighted. If it's just a water drop or other false positive, then it should be a one click 'ignore', and the customer goes on their way without charge. If it is genuine, then show the evidence to the customer and discuss charges in person. Company still saves time over a manual check and has much improved accuracy and evidence collection.
They are being greedy by trying to eliminate the employee altogether. This probably doesn't actually save any money, if anything it costs more in dealing with complaints, not to mention the loss of sales due to building a poor image.

I will bring this up again like I did my last post concerning Hertz.
While I was in Albuquerque, NM getting off the Amtrak train, I reserved our rental car from their website and went to the nonexistent address with no phone number or anything. After half an hour we called another Hertz and they basically told us to piss off and call the location we booked the car. I have few brands that I boycott and now they will be Nestle products (and sub companies) and Hertz.

That's a tall order. And just to be clear, not saying we should just give up against those numbers. It's not an all-or-nothing situation.

I'm interested in examples of when name-brand is worse quality, but yes, name-brand isn't always objectively better, and is often produced in the same facility.
As usual, it depends, so don't knee-jerk to all one or the other, if it matters to you, compare the packaging (it'll say where it was produced, so you can guess when it's the same product).

I used Avis in a different state for a short car rental and they sent me a hefty bill for some kind of damage below the vehicle a couple months after returning it.
I refused to pay and will refuse to use them ever again. Your mileage may vary.
I rent through Costco and try to pick Alamo when possible. Avis is decent but they often share a line with Budget which can take forever.
I’m not a loyalty member of any brand for reference.
The term AI itself is a shifting of goalposts. What was AI 50 years ago* is now AGI, so we can call this shit AI though it's nothing of the sort. And everybody's falling for the hype: governments, militaries, police forces, care providers, hospitals... not to speak of the insane amounts of energy & resources this wastes, and other highly problematic, erm, problems. What a fucking disaster.
If it wasn't for those huge caveats I'd be all for it. Use it for what it can do (which isn't all that much), research it. But don't fall for the shit some tech bro envisions for us.
* tbf fucking around with that term probably isn't a new thing either, and science itself is divided on how to define it.
Agreed. But most people have neither the time nor capacity to track all of these specifics, so popular discussions of AI-related technologies inevitably break down into a mud pit of people talking past each other about various different topics.
Which, if you think about it, is true of most public discussions about any complex topic. It almost invariably devolves into a miscommunication or a discussion about semantics.
People have the capacity to track genres and whatnot, what's so different about this?
I think people could understand if explained probably, but unfortunately journalists rarely dive deeply enough to do that. It really doesn't need to get too involved:
- machine learning - tell an algorithm what it's allowed to change and what a "good" output is and it'll handle the rest to find the best solution
- Bayesian networks - probability of an event given a previous event; this is the underpinnings of LLMs
- LLM - similar to Bayesian networks, but with a lot more data
And so on. If people can associate a technology with common applications, it'll work a lot more like genres and people will start to intuit limitations of various technologies.
What's different is that most people will see it as "tech stuff" and mentally file it in a drawer with spare extension cords and adapters. They don't care to deeply study or catalog things. Nerds care about that, and most people here, including me, are nerds, but most people are not nerds and consider learning to be a form of torture.
People writ-large don't care about proper genre labels either, they just kinda pick a vibe and guess off of it. Look at all the -core suffixed aesthetic names that cropped up in the last decade.
What was AI 50 years ago is now AGI,
You’re not wrong, but that’s also a bit misleading. “AI” is all-encompassing while terms like AGI and ASI are subsets. From the 1950s onward AI was expected to evolve quickly as computing evolved, that never happened. Instead, AI mostly topped out with decision trees, like those used for AI in videogames. ML pried the field back open, but not in the ways we expected.
AGI and ASI were coined in the early 2000s to set apart the goal of human-level intelligence from other kinds of AI like videogame AI. This is a natural result of the field advancing in unexpected, divergent directions. It’s not meant to move the goal post, but to clarify future goals against past progress.
It is entirely possible that we develop multiple approaches to AGI that necessitate new terminology to differentiate them. It’s the nature of all evolution, including technology and language.
The current situation is a bubble based on an over hyped extension of the cloud compute boom. Nearly a trillion dollars of capital expenditure over the past 5 years from major tech companies chasing down this white whale and filling up new data centers with Nvidia GPUs. With revenue caping out at maybe 45 billion annually across all of them for “AI” products and services, and that’s before even talking about ongoing operation costs such as power for the data centers, wages for people working on them, or the wages of people working to develop services to run on them.
None of this is making any fucking profit, and every attempt to find new revenue ether increases their costs even more or falls flat on its face the moment it is actually shipped. No one wants to call it out at higher levels because NVIDIA is holding up the whole fucking stock market right now, and them crashing out because everyone stoped buying new GPUs will hurt everyone else’s growth narrative.
what do you think is driving the image recognition take that comes from the computer vision hardware?
it's an LLM.

Too many people these days don't use or have access to credit cards for services like this. Many people I know only use bank debit cards, or worse, use the debit preloaded cash cards issued by their employers' payroll service provider.
Credit cards motivate banks to help you, because if you won't pay, and the business doesn't pay, the bank has to take the hit.
Debit cards will work as well if your bank values it's reputation - but not all banks do.
And I would not trust a preloaded card provider to assist. You are neither their business partner nor their customer and that puts your interests at the bottom of a very long list. You have to hope some law is on your side or that your issue is so trivial that resolving it is more cost effective then dealing with you.
I don't understand how this works out badly for the person using a debit card. You pay for the vehicle and if they try to make you pay more you ask for proof and if you don't get it you walk away.
Or do they require a collateral fee when renting?
It's about who's lawyers you can rally to your defense in a dispute.
With a credit card you're spending the bank's money. If you can convince the bank you're in the right, it's you and the bank's lawyers recovering the bank's money.
As a debit card user, the banks will support your legal rights, because it's good business for your clients to prosper. While the bank's lawyers won't go to bat for you, many will be willing to give you quasi-legal and quasi-financial tidbits or point you in the right direction.
As the bank's client's employee, you're basically on your own. Good luck.
it's because with credit cards they can check the credit limit, then be sure that the card can pay the insurance deductible in case of crash
instead with debit i can rent a car, close or deativate the card, crash/total the rental car and then avoid paying any extra fee
most rentals don't rent with debit cards because they want to be sure, and who accepts debit:
- they preauthorize thousands of dollars instead of hundreds
- they only rent the lowest end of the available cars
I paid a $300 deposit to reserve a moving company in five days.
The associate on the phone told me to read the terms carefully online
I said sure and skimmed it. Then paid the emailed invoice. I shopped around and found a rate 40% cheaper.
So I called the next day. 20 hours later. Spoke to the same associate and she said no refund because it's within 7 days of the appointment.
I wasn't having it. Yes it's in the terms. Don't care. She knew the booking was not refundable and said read the terms instead of fucking telling me that on our phone call.
I called her right the fuck out. We spoke on the phone. I didn't self service online.
I told her I saw the terms and I don't care. I called 20 hours after our previous call and she knew the deposit was not refundable. That's shady as fuck.
I demanded a refund. She pointed to terms.
I said I was going to issue a charge back and blast them online in every platform I could find.
She spoke to the owner and I got my refund.
Oh, so Hertz has gotten wise to... every online platform that exists: Outsourcing all responsibility for their user-hostile bullshit to some vague "system" that cannot be held accountable.
I'm so sorry but the advertised cost has doubled because... Computer says so! No, sir, there's nothing I can do, sir, you see it's the system.
And you can't go anywhere else, because everyone else is doing it (or soon will be) too!
just wait till they start denying health insurance with it

Oh, this is a thing. It's called an accountability sink.
There is a really interesting book called the unaccountability machine by Rory Sutherland (if my memory is working). Worth a read
I get why they'd use something like this to save money and time but, is suspect that correct use would include a human check before charging people.
We need to start pushing for laws on this kind of thing. Automated checks are fine if you, as the company, trust they won't have too many false negatives. If you aren't checking for false positives, though, you should be heavily fined for each false report. $25,000 per false report sounds like a good place to start. Hopefully that would be large enough to not just be the cost of doing business.
Hertz has also called the cops on their customers for a variety of asinine reasons.
I steer clear of them and Enterprise (Enterprise has been working the whole shaft for ICE).

You don't pay for files and still download them that's piracy.
I guess they make it easy because, they hope when they treat their customers with respect, the customers return the favor with paying for the service.
But in deathspiral-capitalism I get that people are not paying for anything anymore.
"In a world full of thieves, the only real sin is to get caught."
Main differences : it does not need credentials (attached to browser session), and no additional software required.
Just the web extension. And bugs.

I'm done with Pixels. The first one was amazing. But the quality has been going gradually downhill for both the main series and the A series phones.
I love how they just make things worse indiscriminately now. Like you'd expect that if a company turns evil, they make things worse for profit, but google often doesn't even care about that and makes everything worse randomly.
The clearest example I have is the maps app, which used to let you tap once to clear the search and directions bars off the screen. They removed that in one update for absolutely no fucking reason, so now a third+ of the screen is blocked at all times. If that space displayed ads or something at least I'd get that they were making an app shittier for profit, but nowadays more often than not everything just seems to be shitty because they don't give a fuck anymore.
Due to the risk of battery fires, Google said that devices with more than 400 charge cycles could see their capacity and charging speed drastically reduced.
Apparently they design phones that'll last just over a year before self-igniting.
Does 400 charge cycles really amount to just over a year of use for most people? I’m assuming one cycle means a full power cycle, not just a top up.
For reference (and I understand it’s a bit apples to oranges) I’ve had my iPhone 15 since Dec 2023 and charge it every night and it’s currently showing 125 charge cycles.
Oh well they were forced to acknowledge a problem that needed a fix and what they did was they asked Gemini how do we fix this which Gemini had zero problems at all, not even an inconvenience, in giving them it's fix so that's what they went with without a single further thought employed in the matter
They really liked it when the response started with it's super easy

I just got rid of my Pixel 6a because it had one of the bad batteries. Tip to anyone taking advantage of the trade in rebate, DO NOT get the $150 Google Store credit and be like me thinking you can use it on the Google Fi Store to purchase a new Pixel. The $150 store credit is only towards the purchase of a Pixel phone via the Google Store. Take the $100 cash rebate option instead because it tells you once you choose either option, you cannot change it.
My hope was to get the Pixel 9a on my account for $249 (activation discount) on my account and then use the $150 store credit... nope.
It's all well and good being oh so principled like you're making yourself out to be, but phones are expensive, and the above user is being completely rational for wanting to settle on a Pixel 9a for $250, especially when the other OEMs have plenty of their own problems.
Get off your moral high horse.
I too don't understand why you would be responsible for THEM breaking the screen.
Imagine your mechanic breaks a part while changing your oil then says you're responsible for the cost of it.
If the carmaker has a recall on the airbags, and the dealer breaks the instrument cluster in the process of replacing the airbag assembly, you're goddamn right I'm not paying for the instrument cluster. I don't care if the car is ten years old. It's a recall, which means it's bad design and always was. That is 100% on the mechanic, the manufacturer, and the engineer that designed the instrument cluster to break if the airbag is replaced.
They can fuck right off with that shit
Didn't HMD make a couple of those too?
Yes, the HMD Skyline has an easily removable backplate and battery.
Samsung locks the bootloader, even for carrier unlocked versions traight from samsung's website. (At least for those sold in the US, not sure about other places)
If you don't intend to use a custom RON like Lineage OS, you wouldn't notice a difference. But if you do, then it might be a dealbreaker. As for the Xcover series in particularx the specs are worse for the amount you're paying. Camera is worse, SoC is slower, assuming if you are conparing the price of a brand new mainstream S or A series phones to a brand new Xcover series. But if you don't care about worse specs for the swappable battery, then sure, go ahead. I personally wouldn't get the Xcover series, doesn't seem like a good deal, the screen is LCD and I'm way too used to OLED/AMOLED of the more mainstream phones.
The EU will require all smartphones to have replaceable batteries by 2027
The decision could have a global impact.Cecily Mauran (Mashable)
That's for "easily replaceable" batteries, not necessarily swappable, as in pop off the cover and insert new battery.
The new Fairphone 6, for example, requires a screw driver to open up the phone, and that would meet the legal requirements of the EU law.
The battery of my Pixel 6 started to bloat and leak last week. I contacted support. After a bit of back and forth where they asked me to provide proof of purchase and pictures of the phone, they sent me a brand new Pixel 6 and told me to just recycle the old one.
I reported the issue on Tuesday, received the new phone on Friday. That's not bad support for a 4 year old device that's long out of warranty. I fully expected them to tell me to go F my self.
Old? I have a 7a and i just bought it from Google…

Shit. I guess that is old in phone years
Next you'll be saying people born in the eighties are old
I think, but 100% on this, that not all 6a's were affected.
Patch it to the latest update. If you get a notification about your battery then it's probably fucked.
Oh, was it $452? They didn't email a confirmation and I forgot to screenshot it.
Can someone screenshot it? That would be great.
People in this thread mentions setting the phone to only charge to 80%, it will hell extend battery life.
Settings -> Battery -> Charging Optimization
I put my IMEI in and it said I was eligible. But then it gets stuck in an infinite loop of support links with no option out (at least when I selected to get a replacement battery). Edit: I got free of the loop, but the nearest place to take my phone into to get the battery replaced is 100 miles away!
I think I'm just going to get a new phone and move on. Not a Pixel though. Fuck this noise. My wife had a Pixel 5a and the motherboard fried itself after a couple of years. Google sent her a Pixel 6a replacement about 2 months later (long after we'd found her a non-Pixel replacement). So I upgraded to that replacement for in a 4a. But now this battery/fire bullshit? I'm done with their shitty products and their shitty support!
I have owned 3 pixels.
5a - bricked randomly
8 - screen failed within 6 months
6a - stuck in a bootloop, gave up on fixing it just before the battery issue made headlines
I gave them a fair shake. Never again.
Before the pixel existed I owned a Google Nexus ~~5~~ 4 which was manufactured by LG and to date that was the worst phone I've ever owned. I guess my point is it doesn't matter who is manufacturing the hardware; if Google is involved it's gonna be junk.
Edit: it was a 4 not a 5 but either way it was such an awful experience I've never bought another piece of Google hardware since
I had a Nexus 5 (also LG) and it was the best I'd had for years. Ran lineageOS on it (maybe it was CyanogenMod still I can't remember) but that thing was the shit.
I left it on top of my car once and ended up destroying it. Swapped the modem into an EU model (the modem and GPS module survived, all other components failed) and had basically a brand new phone afterwards.
The Nexus 4 was a great phone in my opinion.
Had it rooted and everything for about 6 years.
The 8 had known screen issues, and they were fixed even out of warranty. After six months it would have been within warranty, so you definitely should have been able to get that fixed. I know, I had to have mine replaced too.
I've had a 4, 6, and 8. No issues. But I know that if I do have hardware issues, Google will address them like these screen and battery issues.
Cool. I'm not going to do that another three times when I can spend less money on phones that don't break.
Not to mention Google doesn't do stores where I live.
I went to the nearest Google stor
A "Google Store" doesn't even exist in my country lol
Honestly, I got the 6a because it was going to be supported for a long time compared to other phones. This rubs me the wrong way.
That took me about a week to get my money.
Got a fairphone now instead 😎
Considering it is a Google phone their long term support is still crap compared to things like Fairphone or even iPhone.
But it sucks that this happens and I hope they contact you for a trade in. Rules are also changing so all phones need to have a minimum lifespan of 5 years or so
Considering it is a Google phone their long term support is still crap compared to things like Fairphone or even iPhone.
At least it beats Samsung, I'm not buying any product from them ever again
Oh shit I didn't hear about the 6a also being fucked.
I lost my 4a to their shenanigans, couldn't get it repaired and have now a Xcover 6 pro which I bought refurbished.
Best modern phone: swappable battery, headphone jack, long software support, micro sd
I got an extra 30% battery life after switching to GrapheneOS. I'm guessing whatever is saving my battery, would also bring down the load on the system.
I did notice my phone heats up much less after switching to GrapheneOS.
I've been runnnng GrapheneOS with charge capped at 80%. Phone has not emulated thermite.
I haven't found any discussion about the battery issues at GrapheneOS yet.
Yep. It's the capacity.
Anyone can cap the charging speed by using a garbage $2 700mA charger from 2008.
I have no recommendations for versions. Depends in your case.
Although I'll mention that some people don't like that Pixel by default doesn't include the bottom menu on the screen, and uses other swiping features on the screen to do the same thing.
However in your system settings you can change the UI to gave the navigation menu at the bottom of the screen similar to Samsung.

Easily, because the Bible is filled with vile shit. Because it's made up bullshit that let's you argue every side of every point because it's a amalgam of garbage written by idiots with the occasional line of wisdom sprinkled in.

Remember that Discover is self-banked (unlike Visa/Mastercard that banks sign up with). This means that every credit line needs to be backed by... well ... A bank.
Bigger banks mean more credit opportunities, better interest rates (etc. etc). Deeper credit lines.
How hard can you throw?
Amex gift cards. Cashapp uses Block(Square) for their payment processing, which is easier to use because you can transfer funds to that from your bank.
You can in Japan apparently. They have a system where you can go to convenience store and pay by scanning a code
You can also sorta use zelle, but the technical integration is not great. It's a very manual process as it is
Ultimately, the problem is we let two companies dominate commerce itself. We just need to let the governmet do payment processing, and require compatibility

Discover and Diners Club merged a few years ago btw. Discover also has an alliance with JCB.
So Discover network is actually really, really big.
In Italy, there's a debit card circuit called PagoBancomat.
Italy also has a digital-only payment system called Satispay. Denmark and Finland have MobilePay (which is way better than Satispay). Sweden has Swish.
Your country may have something similar, look it up. And then you can always pay with PayPal by connecting your bank account directly, with no cards involved (at least in Europe).

Ledger Crypto Wallet - Security for DeFi & Web3
Secure your crypto assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Monero, and more. Give yourself peace of mind by knowing that your cryptocurrencies are safeLedger
How is an even more niche process that involves having to go to an exchange to buy crypto then safe guard it and it being a taxable event when buying goods with it in some countries a solution?
People are wanting a mainstream alternative that the companies that they buy from use, and if the companies don't care to use it then it doesn't matter for the average person.
Even people actually into crypto are less interested in spending it because it exposes their balance if they aren't using coin mixers or monero which can make them a target. Not to mention most just see it as stock they hope goes to the moon as opposed to going through the cumbersome process of buying for the purpose of spending it like a depreciating asset.

Unfortunately crypto is already complicated as is. And as the other user said bitcoin isn't the best choice. Monero would be as close to the overall goal as it is possible.
Now using monero would be more anonymous than credit/debit cards making it a better option - but not many vendors support it, and cash is just simpler than any other option.
In Canada, I'd like to see Interac develop into one. Hopefully more prominence wouldn't ruin it
Edit:
Following several aborted merger attempts which were either blocked by the Competition Bureau or by some of the co-owners between 2008 and 2013, Interac and Acxsys were combined into a single for-profit organization, Interac Corporation, on 1 February 2018.
Never mind. It would be inevitable.

I'm not saying there is illegal content. Read my comment.
I'm saying the possibility of there being illegal content only exists if they allow the reintroduction of those titles. They'd need trust in the store moderation, in the lack of bad faith actors, in a lot of things.
And it would be an absolutely stupid business decision for them.
I am NOT condoning what they did, nor what they are doing. I am explaining, from their business perspective, why allowing potentially illegal content back on the platform is a non-argument and you cannot convince them otherwise.
I'm saying the possibility of there being illegal content only exists if they allow the reintroduction of those titles.
Again, no. If there were illegal content before then it's already breaking the rules. If you're breaking rules once, why would adding more rules change anything?
They'd need trust in the store moderation, in the lack of bad faith actors, in a lot of things.
What? Yeah, the store moderators have to enforce the rules. I don't know what this has to do with anything. Illegal or just banned, they have to be removed by the moderators. What difference does it make? This doesn't make any sense. Adding more rules doesn't magically remove the content. Moderators still have to do it. If they weren't doing it for illegal content, why would they do it for only banned but legal content?
The reason they did it is because they were pressured by a weird group who has a lot of influence. It wasn't because they were worried about illegal content, which is obvious because that's not the rule they applied. If the rule was "you're not allowed to sell illegal content" (which is obviously always true) then it'd be fine. Instead they made a rule for not allowing specific types of legal content.
You're not great at risk assessment, are you?
They have a risky move, which in 1/10000 cases leads to an illegal game being paid for through their payment platform.
And they have a safe move, where this never happens. Literally.
If the expected risk is positive in case 1, they will opt for case 2.
You must at least be able to understand this simple logic, right? If not, then I'm afraid this conversation is over because you're not even remotely trying to understand their logic, and you're just looking for a reason to be mad. Your irrationality makes me nauseous.

Maybe it’s just because I’m so focused on my own issues as a US citizen… But how the hell did some Australian Christofascist group get this powerful? Like, the RIAA and MPAA combined couldn’t get the United States government to make this much movement on “objectionable content” (piracy at the time, and also now, and all of the time between then and now), but even the crypto fascists of yesterday year couldn’t get this much traction. Probably because people like Frank Zappa and Fred Rogers came forth to criticize the ridiculousness and the consequences of such a position and search policies.

Companies tend to multiply received responses to represent the total number of people who were to lazy to complain, so Visa and MasterCard saw 1,000 emails as 10,000,000 in their risk averse actions.
Now 4chan is pissed and have started their own mass email and phonecall campaign, so we shall see where this goes...

Visa also have a fairly well documented history of kowtowing to Christian groups. The CEO of their Asian division is a right-wing religious fanatic who hates, well he's a religious fanatic so you know what he hates, but it's basically everything and everybody.
They don't like Japanese anime very much as well, probably because they think it's all pornography (anime does tend to have that bent, but it's not all pornography).
The thing is on their website they claim not to make moral judgements about purchasers, they claim to authorise anything that isn't actually illegal, so they should be totally fine with pornography and anime. If they are going to be right-wing religious fundamentalists at least they could be honest about it on their website.

Yeah there doesn't seem to be any alternatives in my country other than cash which doesn't work for online purchases.
Apparently there is a complicated thing I can do where I have to go to the post office and then I can send money directly to a company. But that's really inconvenient (it's like a 30-second walk from my house, I'm not doing that) and I don't think steam accepts that payment method anyway. In fact I've never heard of anyone except that payment method so I don't really understand why it exists.

What's even the argument here? Steam already has parental control options, age gates, and content filters... if you don't want your kids seeing that shit on steam, then, like, don't let em?
...meanwhile, let's just continue shoving blatant gambling down minors' throats in the form of lootboxes.
And the reason sexual things had to be filtered was that they are harmful and skew kids' perception of healthy sexuality.
Gambling wasn't considered healthy even where and when marrying a toddler was normal. After all, a traumatized person with unhealthy sexuality does generally understand they are traumatized, a person taught that addiction is normal - not.
This group isn't interested in protecting children they're just interested in pushing their own beliefs on everybody else. The easiest way they can do that is to pretend that they're interested in children. Which I'm sure some of them are, but not in the capacity that anyone wants them to be.
It's a classic right-wing tactic. Because nobody wants to be against a law that protects children.
Which I'm sure some of them are, but not in the capacity that anyone wants them to be.
I laughed, then I cried :_(
People like them used to go after books, now games.

That's their goal for sure, what I mean is how are they pretending to justify it?
There's usually some on-paper benevolent veneer to wrap their hateful bullshit up with.
For example, they hate trans people, but they don't campaign on that out loud - they justify that hated under the guise of shit like protecting bathrooms.
But this is fucking Steam - access to that bathroom is already under lock and key behind an armed guard. They can't just pull the "think of the children!" card when the children already have a myriad of protections.
...or maybe they can, considering what just happened. We live in stupid times.

An alternative to PayPal, called WERO is currently in it's rollout process in Germany, Belgium and France. In October the next step will be activated, allowing payments in e-commerce. Later down the road, you'll be able to pay in real shops. Luxembourg and Netherlands are to join in next. More and more banks start to adopt WERO.
I urge everyone to use WERO as much as you can. It's flying a bit under the radar at the moment and this must be a success. Hopefully more EU members will join soon.
Sounds great, but as with so many of these projects, they sound overly complicated for the masses. Wero is already a thing and it's straight forward. Even that is too complicated for many people, but it's gaining traction at least.

I'm sorry, but that is just a blatant misunderstanding of how economics work. It wouldn't combat blatant consumerism, it would literally destroy the economy. Not to be replaced by something better, but just destroy it. There would be no reason to invest in literally anything, including people, no reason to repair your house or feed the poor, because the money it would cost, would be worth more tomorrow.
Why would I buy a car, or bike, or proper nutritional food, if I could save that money for tomorrow, and buy more? Only tomorrow it's the same thing, so I'll live like shit until the next day, then the next day, and then the next....
The only people who would have any quality of life, would be the rich cunts. They'd live like the do now, because they don't actually need more money.
Deflation is never a good thing, I'm saying this as a socialist.
They're not misunderstanding; you're using Keynesian economics. "The economy" as described today is rich people's wealth, not the wellbeing of the poor.
If people saved instead of building up credit scores, it would be much easier to strike. We don't need to be forced to invest somehow or become even poorer (which is what actually happened). You'll repair your house because you need a house and buy food because you need food. You're more likely to participate in mutual aid with savings than with credit.
I would be for a state owned chain, does not have to be completely decentralized, it's just good tech that can make the payment processors of today obselete.
Basically require each bank to run nodes, while letting the central bank of the country hold the keys to mint new coins.
I mean one could also have verifying nodes run independent.
The tech is there, doesn't have to mean use anarchy moneys, it just means an overhaul of our ways of transferring value around.
“The internet has no borders. Women and girls everywhere are impacted by male violence against women and misogyny in general which we believed these games perpetuated,” she said.

Governments and some religious nutjobs.
They only pretend to care about children. It is about power and control. Always has been, always will.
"Face backlash" = about 160,000 people signed a petition saying they disagreed with it, then went about their daily lives and totally, 100% without a doubt continued using their Visa or Mastercard credit cards.
They don't care, there are no alternatives. They can do whatever they want.

Billionaire Peter Thiel backing first privately developed US uranium enrichment facility in Paducah
A California-based company with ties to billionaire investor and Trump ally Peter Thiel announced plans Friday to build America’s first U.S.-owned, privately developed facility to enrich uranium in far western Kentucky. In an email sent to WKMS, General Matter said that the company intends to make a “historic investment in American nuclear infrastructure” by restoring a shuttered facility in Paducah. The gaseous diffusion plant in McCracken County, which ceased operations in 2013, was built by the U.S. government in the 1950s to bolster national defense efforts – and later to generate fuel for nuclear power plants.
Oh wow, good to see California and Kentucky working so closely together these days on so many important things.

Why do all y'all jump to nukes with this story!? He clearly wants more power for his AI schemes. No conspiracy, the motivation is simple.
U235 enrichment:
Power plant: 3-5%.
Weapons grade: 90%+
Even a bugfuck administration like Trump's isn't going to allow private enterprise to produce weapons-grade fissile material without serious fucking oversight and total control over every step. Why would any government give up their most powerful weapons?
On top of that, it takes hella tech to assemble a thermonuclear weapon. Every government that has a solid intelligence apparatus tracks the tools, scientists and materials involved. An atom bomb is not a hydrogen bomb, not by an order of magnitude, and you can't exactly hide the means for rolling your own Little Boy.
Not trying to bag on you OP, just feel like I'm taking crazy pills when we think a billionaire could get access to nukes.
Ever read Clancy's The Sum of all Fears? Even having obfuscated some facts, building a nuke is simply impossible without every intelligence agency on Earth knowing about it.
Terrorists dropping a "fizzle" on the Super Bowl required many narrative acrobatics. 1,532 things had to go wrong for them to slip that through. And it still fizzled.
Are we still talking about nuclear?
