Allowing some protective but revenue generating tariff rate, somewhere under 40% for EVs, would be a good compromise to open China to Canadian resource markets. Canada is one of the largest (8th) auto markets in the world. Failure to get any deals, or public talks, with companies and countries is innaction that doesn't help get US to submit to stable historical alliance.
It's worth noting that EV tariffs make some sense for the US because they're protecting domestic industry, they make zero sense for Canada which does not have its own domestic car industry. The rational thing for Canada would've been to invite Chinese companies like BYD to do manufacturing here.

Canada produces almost as much vehicles as it consumes. They are mostly foreign owned companies, but it's a sizeable employment base in Ontario and Quebec.
In an unjustified US trade war, threats of nationalizing plants is reasonable, and then selling them to Chinese makers with employment guarantees a win for entire sector and country. But a reasonable tariff/quota level as part of greater Chinese market access/long term supply contracts deal would be the balanced strategy.
The key is that Canada can produce vehicles from both American and Chinese companies. And if we did nationalize existing plants I don't see why we'd sell them to China. Just keep them under public ownership.
A new report from Dropsite News makes the claim that Meta is allegedly scraping a large amount of independent sites for content to train their AI. What’s worse is that this scraping operation appears to completely disregard robots.txt, a control list used to tell crawlers, search engines, and bots which parts of a site should be accessed, and which parts should be avoided. It’s worth mentioning that the efficacy of such lists depend on the consuming software to honor this, and not every piece of software does.
Meta Denies All Wrongdoing
Andy Stone, a communications representative for Meta, has gone on record by claiming that the list is bogus, and the story is incorrect. Unfortunately, the spread of Dropsite’s story is relatively small, and there haven’t been any other public statements about the list at this time. This makes it difficult to adequately critique the initial story, but the concept is nevertheless a wakeup call.
However, it’s worth acknowledging Meta’s ongoing efforts to scrape data from many different sources. This includes user data, vast amounts of published books, and independent websites not part of Meta’s sprawling online infrastructure. Given that the Fediverse is very much a public network, it’s not surprising to see instances getting caught in Meta’s net.
Purportedly Affected Instances
The FediPact account has dug in to the leaked PDF, and a considerable amount of Fediverse instances appear on the list. The document itself is 1,659 pages of URLs, so we were able to filter down a number of matches based on keywords. Please keep in mind that these only account for sites that use a platform’s name in the domain:

PeerTube: 46 matches
There are likely considerably more unique domain matches in the list for a variety of platforms. Admins are advised to review whether their own instances are documented there. Even if your instance’s domain isn’t on the list, consider whether your instance is federating with something on the list. Due to the way federation works, cached copies of posts from other parts of the network can still show up on an instance that’s been crawled.

Regardless of the accuracy of the Dropsite News article, there’s an open question as to what admins can do to protect their instances from being scraped. Due to the nature of the situation, there is likely no singular silver bullet to solve these problems, but there are a few different measures that admins can take:
Establish Community Terms of Service – Establish a Terms of Service for your instance that explicitly calls out scraping for the purposes of data collection and LLM training specifically. While it may have little to no effect on Meta’s own scraping efforts, it at least establishes precedence and a paper trail for your own server community’s expectations and consent.
Request Data Removal – Meta has a form buried within the Facebook Privacy Center that could be used to submit a formal complaint regarding instance data and posts being part of their AI training data. Whether or not Meta does anything is a matter of debate, but it’s nevertheless an option.
(EU-Only) Send a GDPR Form – Similar to the above step, but try to get the request in front of Meta’s GDPR representatives that have to deal with compliance.
Establish Blocking Measures Anyway: Even if private companies can still choose to disregard things like robots.txt and HTTP Headers such as X-Robots-Tag: noindex, you can still reduce the attack surface of your site from AI agents that do actually honor those things.
Set Up a Firewall: one popular software package that’s seeing a lot of recent adoption for blocking AI traffic is Anubis, which has configurable policies that you can adjust as needed to handle different kinds of traffic.
Use Zip Bombs: When all else fails, take measures into your own hands. On the server side, use an Nginx or Apache configuration to detect specific User Agents associated with AI, and serve them ever-expanding compressed archives to slow them down.
In all reality, fighting against AI scraping is still a relatively new problem that’s complicated by lack of clear regulation, and companies deciding to do whatever they want. The best we can do for our communities is to adopt protective measures and stay informed of new developments in the space.

Yea, me too, I got a cheap pro subscription and use it often. It is a fast way to find info for me. But I guess behind the scenes they are tracking us in the worst possible way.
The CEO also said in an interview that he would use Chrome to mine endless amounts of user data. As the dead internet becomes a problem, he wants to use Chrome itself to detect when it’s being used by a human and scrape all the data they produce. I instantly uninstalled the Perplexity app after seeing that.

You can find Lemmy posts on Mastodon, yeah, but only if it's been federated there.
In regards to Lemmy, there's two means of federation I'm aware of:
When a user of a Mastodon instance is following a Lemmy community, posts made to it are federated to their instance.
Any registered user on a Mastodon instance can enter the URL of a Lemmy post in their instance's search field to actively federate it in
You should then be able to find the post on Mastodon either over the community's profile, via potential hashtags used in it, or possible the author's profile if that got federated over too (idk if this happens automatically).
If the post was made by an Mbin user, then there's also the option to follow the user directly instead of the community the post was made in. Not sure if this also applies to Piefed, but definitely doesn't for Lemmy.
So it is possible if it has been federated to both. There are different reasons why that might happen, in this case it is because that thread's OP posted it on Mastodon but mentioned a Lemmy community.
Another reason why it might happen is that a Mastodon user is following a Lemmy community or user.

UK Asks People to Delete Emails In Order to Save Water During Drought
It’s a brutally hot August across the world, but especially in Europe where high temperatures have caused wildfires and droughts. In the UK, the water shortage is so bad that the government is urging citizens to help save water by deleting old emails. It really helps lighten the load on water hungry datacenters, you see.
The suggestion came in a press release posted on the British government’s website Tuesday after a meeting of its National Drought Group. The release gave an update on the status of the drought, which is bad. The Wye and Ely Ouse rivers are at their lowest ever recorded height and “five areas are officially in drought, with six more experiencing prolonged dry weather following the driest six months to July since 1976,” according to the release. It also listed a few tips to help people save on water. playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2… The tips included installing a rain butt to collect rainwater for gardening, fixing leaks the moment they happen, taking shorter showers, and getting rid of old data. “Delete old emails and pictures as data centres require vast amounts of water to cool their systems,” the press release suggested.
Datacenters suck up an incredible amount of water to keep their delicate equipment cool. The hotter it is, the more water it uses and a heatwave spikes the costs of doing business. But old emails lingering in cloud servers are a drop in the bucket for a data center compared to processing generative AI requests.
A U.S. A Government Accountability Office report from earlier this year estimated that 60 queries of an AI system consumed about a liter of water, or roughly 1.67 Olympic sized swimming pools for the 250,000,000 queries generated in the U.S. every day. The World Economic Forum has estimated that AI datacenters will consume up to 1.7 trillion gallons of water every year by 2027. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has disputed these estimates, saying that an average ChatGPT query uses “roughly one fifteenth of a teaspoon” of water.
Downing Street announced plans in January to “turbocharge AI” in the U.K. The plan includes billions of pounds earmarked for the construction of massive water-hungry datacenters, including a series of centers in Wales that will cost about $16 billion. The announcement about the AI push said it will create tens of thousands of jobs. It doesn’t say anything about where the water will come from.
In America, people are learning that living next to these massive AI data centers is a nightmare that can destroy their air and water quality. People who live next to massive Meta-owned datacenters in Georgia have complained of a lack of water pressure and diminished quality since the data centers moved in. In Colorado, local government and activists are fighting tech companies attempting to build massive data centers in a state that struggled with drought before the water-hungry machines moved in.
Like so many other systemic issues linked to climate change and how people live in the 21st century, small-scale personal solutions like “delete your old emails” won’t solve the problem. The individual water bill for a person’s old photos is nothing compared to the gallons of water required by large corporate clients running massive computers.
“We are grateful to the public for following the restrictions, where in place, to conserve water in these dry conditions,” Helen Wakeham, the UK Environment Agency’s Director of Water, said in the press release. “Simple, everyday choices—such as turning off a tap or deleting old emails—also really helps the collective effort to reduce demand and help preserve the health of our rivers and wildlife.”
Representatives from the UK Government did not immediately return 404 Media’s request for comment.

The job market is queasy and since you're reading this, you need to upgrade your CV. It's going to require some work to game the poorly trained AIs now doing so much of the heavy lifting. I know you don't want to, but it's best to think of this as dealing with a buggy lump of undocumented code, because frankly that's what is between you and your next job.
A big reason for that bias in so many AIs is they are trained on the way things are, not as diverse as we'd like them to be. So being just expensively trained statistics, your new CV needs to give them the words most commonly associated with the job you want, not merely the correct ones.
That's going to take some research and a rewrite to get it looking like those it was trained to match. You need to be adding synonyms and dependencies because the AIs lack any model of how we actually do IT, they only see correlations between words. One would hope a network engineer knows how to configure routers, but if you just say Cisco, the AI won't give it as much weight as when you say both, nor can you assume it will work out that you actually did anything to the router, database or code, so you need to explicitly say what you did.
Fortunately your CV does not have to be easy to read out loud, so there is mileage in including the longer versions of the names of the more relevant tools you've mastered, so awful phrases like "configured Fortinet FortiGate firewall" are helpful if you say it once, as does using all three F words elsewhere. This works well for the old fashioned simple buzzword matching still widely used.
KDE has this mindset where if someone wants to implement something they think is cool, and the code is clean and mostly bug free, well -- have at it! Ever wonder why there's 300 options for everything?
Usually (because there's a bunch of people trying to optimize the core for speed and load times and such) this also means that the unused code-paths are required to not contribute negatively to things like load times. So a plugin like this that doesn't get loaded by default unless enabled, and thus doesn't harm everyone else's performance. It also means that if it stops working in the future and starts to bitrot, it can be dropped without affecting the core code.

It could just be the parts of the internet I inhabit, but I don't think it's really a recent thing, I think it's just hitting a point where the masses are really starting to take notice of it.
I'm pretty sure I remember seeing memes about CCTV cameras and such in the UK about 20 years ago now, and I don't think it's an accident that things like 1984 and V for Vendetta were written by British authors and set there.
As an outsider, it's certainly looked to me like the UK has been kind of a nanny state for a long time, and it's not a long walk from there to the kind of bullshit we're seeing more of now.

But I work in 911 dispatch in a different area where orbeez guns aren't illegal, and they've been kind of a problem this year.
I think some of our local delinquents have taken to freezing the balls or modifying their guns to shoot faster or something, because we have had a few injuries and broken windows and such linked to orbeez guns this year.
Even without that, they're a pretty significant nuisance that have started a lot of fights because no one likes being pelted with orbeez.
And of course there's the problem that exists with all toy guns where if you paint them black or are running around with them in the dark it can be hard to tell them apart from a real gun which is asking for trouble.
And the countless calls I've gotten from neighborhood karens who "don't think it's safe" or "that they shouldn't be doing that here" is getting kind of old.
And not for nothing, orbeez can be really slow to break down in the environment and I wouldn't be surprised if they're contributing to our microplastics problem.
If there is a way to twist the interpretation of a law to say that orbeez guns are illegal, I'm not at all surprised to hear about cops doing just that. Not that I generally support that, but if you caught me on a bad day after I took a bunch of calls about kids with them, I might be tempted to sign a petition to get them banned.
As someone who has regularly carried a variety of knives and multi tools almost every day of my life, I also can't say I'm a fan of their knife laws.
That said, as-written, I don't find them to be quite as bad as a lot of people make them out to be (how the police choose to interpret and enforce those laws is sort of a different matter)
It's not the sort of knife I normally choose to carry, but all of the reasons I normally carry and use a knife for can be done perfectly safely and effectively with something like a regular Swiss army knife with a 2.5inch non-locking blade which should generally be ok to carry for no particular reason.
It should be noted that I do not carry a knife for any self-defense purposes. I feel very little need to defend myself, and even if I did a knife would be just about my last choice after pretty much any other object in arm's reach. Even though where I am, I could pretty much walk around town carrying a halberd for self defense if I really wanted to and it would be legal, I actually do tend to choose my EDC knives to be pretty inoffensive-looking free of any unnecessary point/stabby bits and if possible.
And cases that really require more knife than that aren't exactly part of my usual everyday carry scenario, and the appropriate knives for those occasions should be covered under the lawful justification and reasonable use exemptions (again, how the police actually apply those laws can leave something to be desired, but that's often a problem here too)
Again, not a fan of their knife laws, but in the grand scheme, I'm not nearly as outraged by them as a lot of people are.
Seems like the law was meant to exclude the full-size Swiss army knife. They're great for most pocket knife purposes! But having damaged nerves on two fingertips from non-locking knives, yeah, I won't touch one. Although the "classic" is a great everyday pocket knife!
Funny enough, I was hiking today with a small "Rambo knife affixed to my backpack strap. Do I need that on a hike in the woods? LOL, hardly ever. But it's nice to have when I do need it.

Labour won in a landslide after the Brexit mess rightfully fucked up the Tories. They do this because they aren't center left, but a right/far-right party by their ideology now. They don't have to do this. They want to do this.
The "Labour/Social Democratic" parties all over Europe have been sliding into right/far-right authoritarianism and Racism over the past decades, after many of them slided into Neoliberalism at the end of the 90s and in the 2000s.

Well, those politicians will use the population as human shield and we couldn't get to them, so the entire thing has to be cordonned off. I think encircling the entire island in a safety minefield, the entire perimeter and 50 kilometer deep, a anti-air curtain that covers the entire Island plus 200 km in all directions, cutting all communication cables going to the Island and a radio jamming system that neutralizes all communication devices with a power rating less then 5 terawatts on RF bands from 20kHz to 750 THz would be a good start.
If that does not prove sufficient to silent the sources of this informational hazard infection then we will have to take serious measures such as sinking the whole thing by about 350 miles deep into the mantle.

Investing money to catch up is the way to do it. The CEO before Gelsinger didn't invest in R&D, which is why they fell behind in the first place. When you're behind, you either need to spend crazy amounts of money to catch up, or sell off the fabs and become a design only firm, but they decided to take the government handouts and keep the fabs.
It of course won't happen, but if Intel went poof next monday then what would happen to the x86 ecosystem. It's basically co-owned by AMD and Intel. As I recall the sharing partnership that these two have basically prevents neither guy from selling their patents/license to third parties. Would we just be left with AMD monopoly with intel's corpse hanging from it, until X86 finally croaks? Do these CPU licensing agreements prevent just wholesale acquisition of Intel?
Companies as big as Intel don't typically go poof, they have bankruptcy proceedings and sell off their assets. If those assets contractually can't be sold, then yeah AMD would be the remaining owner.

I would imagine the real issue here is not the cpus but the fabs as they are the things really underperforming and have for at least a decade now
If Intel disappears, I imagine AMD will end up as the sole owner of the relevant Intel x86 patents during bankruptcy proceedings. Then AMD will then either negotiate a new agreement with someone else who wants to make x86 processors, or they end up having a monopoly on x86 and are forced to tread extremely lightly to avoid an antitrust lawsuit.
I think someone would get those Intel X86 rights. However there may be questions on whether the rights from AMD like A64 are transferable. But if some company buys the entire Intel X86 division, I bet that counts as the patents remaining within the division that has the rights, although it is under different ownership. We recently had the Arm vs Qualcomm case that showed this can be allowed. Anyways this might be disruptive, and the immediate effect would probably be that AMD X86 will be a lot more expensive.
Me, standing on the shore with a life raft next to me, watching Intel drown: ehhhh.. do we really, though...? They tried to cancel a contract with amd and sue them in an attempt to kill the company in its infancy; they bribed major OEMs when amd was first to market with a 1GHz chip, first to market with x64, trying again to kill the company, this time through starvation; then they sat on their ass for 15 years with essentially no progress, just collecting cash for the most minimal of improvements... I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton of other shit the company has done, playing dirty at every opportunity. It's been about a decade since I took a deep-dive into this.
I don't have a (monitary) horse in this race, but as this has progressed, with the side addition of their chips literally disintegrating, it's been very... enjoyable, validating, to have stuck with amd since finding out about all the bullshit intel has, would do, and continues to do, to try and control the market and remain in control, no matter the cost. Karma may, finally, have caught up with them.
We need every competitor in the cpu market. If AMD wins and destroys intel they will act the same way. We need another competitor in the GPU market as well.

Publicly traded companies aren't children though, where being nice or bad is a force of habit to them, and they are able to learn and improve from their mistakes.
AMD has been an underdog under Intel and Nvidia for most of their existence. If they become the market leader, they will behave like them and start being anti-competitive.
I think the healthy approach is to let it play out, and stop "meddling" as usual with the "free" market. Everybody's observing free market karma at play. Let it happen, as much as it will. All those intel mbas deserve it completely.

They have focused exclusively on high-end, very expensive processors in the past. Now that moore's law is no longer true, that doesn't work anymore, because ARM chips are catching up in performance, at 1/10 of the price.
This is not to promote the product. I merely came across it and couldnt find any reviews except for those from Google Play. I use Android and as much as I hate iOS, their Email app is very consistent regardless if you use their .mac email or Gmail. On Android, it is very difficult to find an email app that is decent. I've been on Fairmail for quite a while until recently when I have sync problems.
So I dig around and found "EPRIVO - Encrypted email and chat". It was a surprise because I am constantly on the look for a good email app (and browser !) on Android. Usually, on Google Play, you will see: Gmail, Thunderbird, Proton, Outlook, Edison Fairmail...etc. I never see Eprivo before.
Anyway, I tested it out on a Gmail account. The app works quite well, here is what I learn:
1) You are forced to create a blanket Eprivo account. This takes like 10 seconds. Then this Eprivo account is then used to get you access to the email app. You can use any email account within it: Gmail, Yahoo. I use Gmail and it works well.
2) The privacy features are interesting. You can do a lot of stuff like prevent forwarding, set timer so email can only be read once, password protect...etc. Now I also used Proton in the past and these features are exclusive to a .proton account. In this app, I can do some of them such as setting the timer on an email. To get the full private features, you need to create a Eprivo email (very easy to create within the app). So, you will have something like abc@eprivovip.com.
3) Prices are surprisingly cheap: 5 bucks / year.
4) They advertise themselves as not an email service but to my understanding a "privatized email service". So it is like a private layer on top of your existing email.

Perhaps the IP is incorrectly identified as being from UK then. I've heard these databases can sometimes be outdated.
I don't think you can do anything about it aside from reporting this as error if they have such thing. Google does, for example, but they also try to estimate the IP country based on people's usage like searches and phone positioning.

In this report, we explore an underrecognized manner in which AI ecosystems increasingly depend on Big Cloud: Big Cloud’s investment in other companies. We show how Big Cloud companies are prolific investors widely deploying hundreds of billions of dollars over thousands of deals, often in smaller, lesser-known startups. We find that: 1. While some regulators have begun to scrutinize the largest of these deals—such as Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI or Google and Amazon in Anthropic—the ecosystem-wide scale of this investment is hard to overstate: Big Cloud invests as frequently and at similar amounts to the largest venture capital firms and startup accelerators. Further, Big Cloud invests about ten times as often as other Big Tech companies, and ten to a hundred times more in total dollar amounts. 2. There are a lot of reasons they could want this. For example, there are probably tens of millions of fake accounts controlled by adversarial nations which are used to sow extremism and disinformation online. It is impossible for counterintelligence to detect these at scale. We can see the corrosive effects that social media is having on society, there are countries actively working to make the problem worse but we have no tools to stop them.
This is also why there is a big push to limit children from accessing social media. They're often the targets for these campaigns because they're easily manipulated and have a lot of free time to spread the misinformation once they're indoctrinated.
I don't think a digital ID is the way to solve this problem. But, we're not being asked or informed about why it is happening. They're, instead, trying to ram these measures through using moral panic about children so anybody opposing them is easily dismissed as "not caring about The Children" or "supporting sex trafficking/pedophiles/predators".

It's a bad situation that needs an immediate solution.

A quel punto però avevo preso atto della merdata, avevo imputato immediatamente tutta la colpa al launcher di MIUI (dato che non ricordo questa cosa succedere su altri dispositivi o altre ROM), e avevo quindi installato Lawnchair (usando il terminale per superare il blocco di cambio launcher), e perdendo così 20 crediti sociali… 💔

Soy milk as a protein and calcium beverage is fine. Tastes OK.
There is lactose-free milk too but that is still suspect. Either it's not all the way lactose free or too much of any kind of dairy quakes my intestines.
If you end up liking oat milk you should try making it yourself. It's ridiculously cheap and easy. It doesn't last nearly as long without the preservatives of store bought, but you can stagger making small batches to match your usage if needed.
It's a Framework with 11th gen Intel i5. I've never seen it below 11W while doing this. I don't recall the exact number I got in Debian 12 but I think it was in the 11-13W range. The numbers were similar with Ubuntu LTS which I used till about a year ago. Now I see 9-10W. The screen is 3:2 13". Not sure about the enconding but I have GPU decoding working in Firefox.
It's a youtube video so whatever youtube is these days. I tested with this M1 Macbook Pro and it was using about 7 watts so 3 watts more is pretty good for pretty much anything. I think my 12th Gen. laptop typically draws about 13-15 doing the same thing, but with a much dimmer screen.
I agree the stock tuning could use some work. As a workaround, have you seen these EasyEffects profiles? The sound quality is significantly improved, but there's still resonance above >60% volume (I think due to the keyboard).
I use a gate filter to block sound that isn't up close and loud, it essentially functions like voice activation with configurable hysteresis. Then next I also use a RNNoise filter I think it's called, which is the machine learning noise filter that blocks unwanted non-voice sounds.

These are my app, gate and noise reduction filter settings, and the order they are enabled in for my microphone input. I am using the easyeffects flatpak which seems to include the standard noise reduction ML model.
You might need to study the gate settings for a minute to tweak them to your needs, I suspect you'll only need to change the curve threshold (-22db in my pic) to pick up your voice when you speak into it, but not background noises. You can use the db values shown in-app while speaking to help adjust it.
Honestly it's a little staggering how much better web video got after the W3C got fed up with Flash and RealPlayer and finally implemented some more efficient video and native video player standards.
My unpopular opinion is that Flash was perhaps one of the greatest media standards of all time. Think about it — in 2002, people were packaging entire 15 minute animations with full audio and imagery, all encapsulated in a single file that could play in any browser, for under 10mb each. Not to mention, it was one of the earliest formats to support streaming. It used vectors for art, which meant that a SWF file would look just as good today on a 4k screen as it did in 2002.
It only became awful once we started forcing it to be stuff it didn't need to be, like a Web design platform, or a common platform for applets. This introduced more and more advanced versions of scripting that continually introduced new vulnerabilities.
It was a beautiful way to spread culture back when the fastest Internet anyone could get was 1 MB/sec.
It worked great only on Windows PCs in the times when PC and Windows still weren't the definite winners of the technological race and people have been using all kinds of computers.
Also, most people now dont remember this, but YouTube was initially popular because their flash video player was efficient, worked acrossed many different system configurations and browsers and dynamically changed resolution to match your connection.
At that point you had some people with broadband connections and a lot more with dial-up. So often dial-up users would not be able to watch videos because they were only available in one resolution.
YT had 144p (or less!) videos ready for dial-up users and higher resolution videos for broadband users and it automatically picked the appropriate video for the client. This made it so most people (dial-up users) would look to YT first, because you knew that YT would have a video that you could actually watch.
YouTube blew up the year I went to college and got access to a T3 line. 🤤 My school had pretty robust security, but it was policy-based. Turns out, if you are on Linux and can't run the middleware, it would just go "oh you must be a printer, c'mon in!"
I crashed the entire network twice, so I fished a computer out of the trash in my parents' neighborhood, put Arch and rtorrrent on it, and would just pipe my traffic via SSH to that machine. 😛

Yeah, my high school had a computer lab donated by Cisco to teach their CCNA course. There were like 2 students taking the class and 25 PCs, so we setup one to run WinMX, Kazaa and eDonkey.
They all had CD-RW drives. We were minting music and movie CDs (divx encoded SD movies were under 650MB so they would fit on a CD), and selling them on campus for $3-5. You could get a 100 blank cd-rs for around $40, so it was very profitable.
I wish there were more M.2 cards beyond just SSDs and wireless NICs. The idea of a small form factor PICe interface is underutilized and things like hardware codec accelerators can keep laptops with older processors usable with new standards for longer. It's sad how PCMCIA had an entire ecosystem of expansion cards yet we somehow decided that the much higher bandwidth M.2 is only for storage and networking. Hell, do what sound cards in the 90s/00s did and have M.2 SSDs specifically designed for upgrading older laptops that also have built in accelerators for the latest media standards. Hardware acceleration is energy efficient and can probably just be bundled into the flash controller like they're bundled into the processor, and unless you have a top of the line SSD you're probably not saturating the M.2 interface anyway.

AMD has been proving that x86_64 can be at least as power efficient as ARM over the last few years (given a floor of performance for like a phone/laptop... I doubt it can get as low power as a little ARM microcontroller)
It seems like x86 was getting so power hungry because of Intel's laser focus on single core performance
I've seen 10-12W easily on 4K for soc without av1. your soc (intel 11 gen) should support av1. try to play the video on mpv (with yt-dlp integration) with various hw acceleration options to see if it changes. probably your browser is software decoding.
for hardware decoding supported soc too I noticed 2-3W of extra power usage when playing youtube from website compared to mpv or freetube. the website seems doing inefficient js stuffs but I haven't profiled it.

Mostly yes but there are functional differences in convenience. For example the standard upgrade process is completely manual. You have to disable third party repos. You have to change the repos. You have to check if you have space. You have to remove obsolete oackages. And more. On Ubuntu, the software update tool does all that, eliminating a lot of possibility for error. To an exoerienced user, the Debian process is fine. A novice would have plenty of opportunity for frustration and pain.
What? Software Center is GNOME, not Ubuntu. Discover is KDE, not Ubuntu. Debian updates can be done the same way? I don't do any of the things you mention. Using SC or just apt upgrade works just fine.
You have to at least modify your sources.list.d manually first. For most people, updating sources.list.d and running full-upgrade will probably work fine...

Ubuntu's has broken on some upgrades for friends and they had to do the whole Debian process manually, but it does try to automate the removals, disablements, and updating sources

If you need to rely on back ports to have day to day function of HARDWARE. Then your OS is not suitable to your use case. Backport reliance should not be the norm for your avg user.
I would argue that backporting one package does not ruin everything. If you backport a lot of stuff, then I would agree that it changing distrio to something more up-to-date should be considered because of the increase of potential problems.
You can use the Wattz app to monitor current/power flowing into/out of the battery on some Android phones. Yes, 3 W is about the average in normal use. Unfortunately you cannot gauge the power consumption while charging unless you have a USB wattmeter too: the system only measures battery current because it's required for battery capacity/percentages.
That is very impressive! Although to be honest I question the accuracy of all those estimated power draws. I would be interested to see an endurance test of your battery- assuming your battery capacity is accurate, your runtime on a full charge should line up with your power draw.

Westerners also seem to forget that the UK, France, and US are mostly to blame for all the instability and war in the middle east, forgetting (intentionally or not) the colonial and imperialist past of their governments when they were committing war crimes and dismissing the will and needs of entire populations for decades before the idea of non-europeans also having rights became popular.
