๐Ÿ“ข CALL TO FEDIVERSE

Tons of discussion about seeking alternatives to #Microsoft #Github, now that it has become part of MS's #AI division.

What made GH so popular, we should ask? Well, a ton of features and services on top of #git and a huge platform that makes exploring millions of #FOSS projects easy, are among the reasons I suppose.

The #ActivityPub @forgefed project funded by #NGI0 via @nlnet is creating open standards to provide the same, *native* to the #fediverse!

Yet they need HELP.

Roughly speaking our grassroots commons faces 3 challenges..

1. Tyranny of small decisions. Uncoordinated action makes it impossible to collaborate at scale

2. Herding of cats. Attempts to govern fiercely independent autonomous people doomed to fail

3. Tragedy of the commons. Unsustainable imbalance between value extraction and delivery

What ailed @forgefed for a long time is that everyone is interested for #ForgeFed to become the real deal, yet no one was working on it, no feedback.

The forgefed.org developers are extending the specs, and asking for feedback in the issue trackers on #Codeberg, but none is forthcoming.

As a result large crowds root for @forgefed #forge federation to come along, but it will not happen anytime soon at the current pace.

@nlnet through #NGI0 provide funding to #ForgeFed, #Vervis, #Anvil, and also #Forgejo and these people are bravely forging ahead. More community help is needed though.

Same is true for #Gitlab's federation efforts.

I always thought one of the big drivers was the idea that recruiters would check out your public repo there. You gotta have a history on github if you want to be employable!

@uastronomer
There's plenty of people working on FOSS with that motivation, and I think it is a valid one too. If you can work on hobby stuff and land a good job as a result of it, maybe make your work your hobby and vice versa.. great.

I moved there month ago and I decided to donate money to them on a regular basis, as I can afford it. So who's able to,please do the same.

And remember, things that are free for you always implies someone else is paying and maybe you become the product being sold.

That is wonderful, and will certainly help keep the initiative going. Thank you ๐Ÿ’•

#Codeberg is a developer platform based on the #Forgejo code forge software.

#ForgeFed is a protocol specification, an extension of #ActivityPub.

Any #forge can implement ForgeFed and become part of the #fediverse, as it were. This allows devs to interact with projects on remote forge servers as if they were part of their local hub. They can create issues, discuss them, create PR's, define teams.

The social network #Github provides to discover #FOSS projects is now federated.

Gitlab has an open epic issue to implement #ActivityPub. Though initially it looked like it had backing from within the corporation, recently that appeared to have waned when the epic was prematurely closed. Under pressure from the public the epic was later reopened, but Gitlab making clear it should be fully community-contributed and gives no priority to it for their own product development.
