I, like many people, find LinkedIn particularly annoying. I like the premise of it, don’t get me wrong, a resume you don’t need to update all that often seems cool. Unfortunately though, its turned into the worst possible version of itself. It’s a place where people post half baked nonsense all for the sake of building a personal brand that nobody really cares about.

I log in and see constant posting that I can only describe as toxic mediocrity. A seemingly endless stream of posts that are over fluffed, over produced and ultimately say nothing.

Is this some kind of touring test for chess players? Figure out if the person your are playing chess with is a human or robot? LLM's aren't yet successful doing that by chatting with them, and as a newbie I suppose that test could be easier, but what do I know...

Israeli media ‘completely ignored’ Gaza starvation – is that finally changing?

In a poll conducted in late July by the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), more than three-quarters of Jewish Israelis – 79% – said they were either “not very troubled” or “not troubled at all” by reports of famine and suffering among Gaza’s Palestinian population.

Media analysts say Israel’s main broadcasters have largely embraced the narrative of a government described as the most far-right in the country’s history.

For months, the Israeli media have responded to international outrage by focusing on Israeli claims that the widespread hunger documented by numerous aid agencies is “a Hamas-orchestrated starvation campaign” – summed up by Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim last month: “There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza.”

Although Israel appears to exist within its own bubble, shielded by a narrative that leaves no room for the suffering of people in Gaza, thousands of demonstrators who recently filled the streets of Tel Aviv are now urging the government to halt the atrocities against the Palestinians.

Why do some instances not load communities properly?

I just started my own Lemmy instance, and it looks to be mostly working.

The problem that I have is that the communities I went through the process of subscribing to only display up to 50 threads and no comments.

This looks like something I've seen on other servers, so I'm wondering what could be causing it and how to fix it.

ChatGPT says something about webfinger and nodeinfo, but I honestly have no idea what any of that is and there's no mention of it in join-lemmy.org/docs/administra…

The outbox on a Lemmy community only has the last 50 posts and there is no pagination to get another 50. Also Lemmy posts have no replies collection so it's impossible to get the replies without using their API.

Well, the good news is at least with conversational backfill, you'll be able to pull the entire reply tree 😁

Israelis rally for end to Gaza war and release of captives

By MEE staff
Published date: 17 August 2025 11:52 BST

Israeli police arrested at least 22 protesters on Sunday as nationwide demonstrations and strikes called for an end to the war in Gaza and the release of captives.

Demonstrators blocked several roads in Tel Aviv, including the highway connecting the city with Jerusalem. Activists set tyres on fire and caused traffic jams, while protest organisers and the main campaign group representing the families of captives called for a general strike on Sunday.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement that protesters would "shut down the country today [Sunday] with one clear call: Bring back the 50 hostages, end the war".

This sort of thing is reason why I stopped paying attention to Louis Rossman. I guess when someone lives inside a social media bubble for so long their reality gets warped enough to think changing a profile picture is the way to make a difference in the world.

A student from Gaza sharing my story 🌿

Hello everyone,
My name is Soliman, a young student from Gaza. Life here is very difficult, but I try to stay hopeful and support my family through these hard times.

We once had a small farm with olive and citrus trees that was our only source of living, but it was destroyed. Since then, we have been struggling to survive.

I’m here to connect with kind people, share my story, and hopefully find support or even just a listening ear.

Thank you for welcoming me into this community ❤️

in reply to Solimana

Free Palestine. But what has this gotta do with Piracy? 🥺

I’m not sure where the best place is to share my story. Could you please guide me to a humanitarian community? I’m in urgent need of help and support, and any donations or advice would mean so much. Thank you from the heart.

Does a torrented non-zipped folder mean anything bad?

Is it really sketchy if you torrent a file that by default it is an unpacked folder? (rather than just being a zipped folder)? I'm not sure if I should be concerned if it is able to run anything or gather data since it was unzipped by default. It contained a monkrus.info file that seemed to gather all the data for some reason.. (I think)

Thank you.

in reply to Yourname942

I'm not really sure what you mean by gathering data, an info or nfo file is just a text file with some instructions.

To me a zip file is a lot more suspicious than a normal directory of files.

in reply to Yourname942

NFO files are just text and don't execute, so generally should be safe.
in reply to MangoPenguin

Unless they didn't enable file extensions to actually show, so an ".nfo" could actually be a ".nfo.exe".

It does not seem to be the case here, but I really would be careful with double clicking untrusted files. Opening them through a media player directly is a much safer option.

in reply to Yourname942

If you open nfo files by double click Windows open a system info tool.

But if you open nfo files with a text editor with "open with " it shows it's text.

So it didn't gather anything.

And I would argue unzipped files are less dangerous because you kinda can assume what you download already.

It's also a good idea to have a av.

Avast is very friendly regarding piracy as in they seem to only flag actual malware and not necessarily keygens cracks and stuff ( heuristics can still make mistakes just report them as false positive )

Russia’s war against Ukraine

Russia’s refusal to declare ceasefire casts doubt on peace process, Zelensky says ahead of White House talks. “If they do not have the will to implement a simple order to stop the attacks, it may take a great deal of effort to get Russia to implement something much more significant, namely peaceful coexistence with its neighbors for decades to come.”

Sensitive details about Trump-Putin summit revealed in discarded government documents, NPR reports. The documents disclose the exact locations and meeting times of the summit and phone numbers of U.S. government staff. They also reveal other sensitive details, such as a menu for a luncheon in honor of “His Excellency Vladimir Putin.”

Putin offers Trump frozen battle lines, written promise not to invade again if Kyiv surrenders Donbas, NYT reports. Trump appeared to endorse Russia’s plan as the fastest way to a peace deal, abandoning the demand for a ceasefire and threats of sanctions against Moscow, officials told the NYT.

Trump, Zelensky to meet in Washington next week after US-Russia summit ends without agreement. Zelensky said he supports Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, noting that the three leaders can cover the “key issues.”

Trump says he and Putin ‘largely agreed’ on land swaps, security guarantees for Ukraine. “I think we’re pretty close to a deal,” Trump told Fox News, adding: “Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they’ll say no.”

Russia declares isolation over after Putin’s red-carpet welcome in Alaska. The summit restored a “full-fledged mechanism for meetings” between the two presidents, without “ultimatums and threats,” Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel on Aug. 16.

I’m really not sure what it is. It works surprisingly well and quickly which makes me think it’s more likely some kind of mechanical turk thing than ai, but when you drive up you talk to what’s clearly some kind of tts thing that pushes all the upselling stuff. The upselling is annoying and you have to practically shout no at it multiple times, but it does get the order right just from natural speech.

in reply to earlstilt

Sure, that is your reality, and I respect that you are sure that's the case (and in many cases it is), but I happen to believe that there are shades of gray from the whitest white to the darkest black. So you do you, I'll follow my own reality.

I think we can easily be in agreement that following a man or woman because of religion is, not only detrimental, but also dangerous. Whatwe will certainly disagree on is that, for me, Jesus is God, and for you, believing that makes me n irrational sheep. And that's cool, I don't think that should be a reason for one of us to hate the other, or even simply be angry (or anything similar, my English vocabulary is not too extensive).

I brought up religion because it was brought up. So, yeah, I'm not one of those that goes around pushing my believes on others, but the moment I see Jesus attacked, I will defend Him the same way He died for me on that cross.

in reply to MrTolkinghoen

Note that it has built-in migration of repos along with all the associated stuff. One at a time, but it works well.

in reply to 𝕸𝖔𝖘𝖘

I'm just saying the percentage of those who may have been willing to pay is small enough to be irrelevant in the for-profit release perspective.

Netflix (when it first started streaming) and Steam (when sales included good older stuff for wildly cheap) showed that piracy is more of a service problem than anything else. A recent article called out the content problems (partial content, a few seasons behind a separate paywall, ads in the middle of playback, etc) a are directly related to an increase in piracy.

So my opinions on copyright aside - a clear model to a happy consumer is an affordable price without all the enshittification going on. People also dont like "buying" content that later disappears because of licensing changes.

So I'd put it squarely in the "their own damn fault" territory, and I'm glad when judges say "no" to them. I'll take whatever positives I can get.

in reply to curbstickle

100% correct. I agree with everything you wrote. I will only add: if buying isn't owning, then pirating isn't stealing.

Edit: fixed mistype

L'eroe genovese senza volto

Giovanni Giustiniani Longo contro Maometto II

Uploading archive files to shadow libraries

I have some books, which are available in the shadow libraries, but their audio counterparts, which I also have — and are essential for the content — aren't available on these sites; so I decided to upload the audio files in a zip/rar, as I'd seen such archives floating around on zlib, however, apparently it seems that you're not allowed to upload archives to zlib. Annas-archive doesn't take uploads and libgen has been down for weeks now; so how would I go on about disseminating these files? Perhaps, libgen allows archives, is that the case? I'll wait for it to come back up if it is.

Personaggi inventati prendono vita

E ora per conoscenza, tagghiamo @internet e @tecnologia

YouTube Chapters & Downloading

Would anyone happen to know what Download Options to set in Tartube (youtube-dl GUI) to download a video, split it at it's chapter points & save each chapter into it's own separate MKV file.

I've gotten some really good advice here on Tartube before so I thought I would try again. Any helpfuly input greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Never used tartube, but yt-dlp supports chapters and splitting. See the manual, or search for examples via your favorite engine.

New Orleans May Hand Its Police Live Facial Recognition Tech. Critics Warn It’ll Help ICE.

cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/44251739

Advocates point, in part, to a new state law, Act 399, which went into effect Aug. 1 and establishes criminal penalties for law enforcement officials who decline ICE requests for cooperation. “If ICE were to ask for any records that NOPD would hold, they would have to risk violating a state law and facing criminal charges [to comply with] what the ordinance is asking them to do,” Sarah Whittington, advocacy director at the ACLU of Louisiana, told Bolts.

Should federal agents get access, Whittington said, “this technology would allow them to use facial recognition to try and further their reach into our communities and track people.” She thinks ICE could “use the network of cameras to target specific people and communities and wait for the technology to alert them to a match and then use it to track that person to a location for arrest—likely away from their home and away from the public.”

Even setting aside these new state laws, experts say the only real way to prevent ICE from accessing sensitive data is to forgo collecting it in the first place. “It is very hard to wall off data collected from lawful government use,” George Washington University law professor Andrew Guthrie Ferguson, the author of several books on big data policing, told Bolts. “The simple truth of digital surveillance is that if you build it, it will be used, and likely used against those with the least amount of political power.”

Su argues, though, that the city council’s attempts at safeguarding facial recognition technology seem to be designed according to an “an old idea” of how governments interact: “federal insulated from state, state insulated from local, and you can still have some stability or control for your own little community.”

In the era of Trump 2.0, he said, those rules no longer apply: “We’re probably at the lowest point with regard to local democratic control.”

Pop cryptid in the News: Jackalope

An outbreak of Shope papillomavirus in Colorado is in the news for the past few weeks. The virus that causes warty growths in cottontail rabbits can be spread by ticks and usually aren’t fatal to the animal unless it interferes with their eyes or mouth.

Rabbits with severe cases of this condition overlaps with ideas about the infamous horned rabbit, the Jackalope. I’ve seen several displays of news or comments on this story that confirm that people really do not know anything about the disease or the history of the American Jackalope legend. They are confused about what is happening with these rabbits and calling them “Jackalopes”.

Some of the kids are amazed. Jackalopes are REAL! And several media outlets are not capable of making real nature stories not look like clickbait by calling the infected animals “Frankenbunnies” and “demon rabbits” because nothing matters today unless it has a stupidly exaggerated name. Tabloid trash says we’re being “invaded” or “overrun”. Nonsense.

I did find videos and references to “Frankenstein” rabbits from at least 12 years ago, even from the Smithsonian Magazine, so it’s not a new thing, but that doesn’t make it less silly. This should be a learning moment. I think, for the most part, it is, if the audience would just listen instead of being so overdramatic.

I pulled out and revamped my content on jackalopes that I wrote in Pop Cryptid Spectator 3 to revisit this topic.

Pop Cryptid: Jackalope

A major theme of the Pop Goes the Cryptid model is the never-ending dispute about calling something a “cryptid”. Today’s complicated example: the Jackalope – a creature that is well-associated with being a “cryptid” online but that almost everyone who knows some history of cryptozoology will insist is not a cryptid because it’s a mythical creature, a hoax.

With the public now seeing rabbits with horny growths and “tentacles” (you weirdo writers need to stop with the Call of Cthulhu), a realization is happening in the cryptid forums and social media that maybe there was something to the idea of a Jackalope as a real animal. But, it’s not simple or direct. Things that evolve in culture never are.

My reference is On the Trail of the Jackalope (2022) by Michael Branch, a comprehensive book that mostly treats the creature as a cultural creation but also briefly explores the idea of its cryptidness.

Animals suffering from the virus were seen by most hunters as suffering from some disease. It’s not hard to figure out. The dark, grotesque growths don’t resemble antlers. The Jackalope, proper, is an antlered jackrabbit or cottontail. So, to equate the two situations is an error.

The true home of the American Jackalope is Douglas, Wyoming where the first taxidermied example was made. The legend goes that it was created sometime between 1932 and 1940 by Douglas Herrick. This is from Branch’s book:

One day young Doug and Ralph Herrick went out roaming the green hills hunting for small game to supplement the family supper. Having bagged a jackrabbit, the brothers returned home and tossed the hare’s body onto the floor of their shop in preparation to skin it. Because they had recently butchered a small deer in the shop, a modest pair of antlers already rested on the floor. By a sheer coincidence that would change the boys’ lives forever, the dead rabbit happened to slide up against the deer’s horns so as to make it appear the jackrabbit sported the rack.

The resulting mount was exhibited at the Hotel LaBonte in the town which was ground zero for the legend and the commercialization of the creature. Creation of Jackalope mounts has become a cottage industry and is now well known worldwide as a symbol of the American West.

“[T]he horned rabbit is unalloyed Americana—a genuine artifact of this country’s folk culture—the mythical beast has also made its way across the oceans and around the world.”

According to the locals, says Branch, about half the visitors to Douglas leave believing the animals are real. Do they believe, or are they just having fun believing? Hard to judge. The same might be said about most cryptids as people like to imagine that tall tales are true because it makes life seem magical. This remains a strong theme in the Jackalope biography.

Jackalope from the video game Red Dead Redemption

The horned rabbit

Cottontail rabbits with horn-like protuberances over various parts of their bodies, particularly their heads, were found to be infected with a type of papillomavirus. There can be little doubt that such stricken rabbits would be viewed as mysterious, then and now.

Branch notes that the prevalence of the horned rabbit across cultures suggests that they were at least somewhat based on these natural anomalies. But the precursors to the American Jackalope are numerous. The specific Jackalope may be a Wyoming invention, but it was not the first depiction of the horned rabbit.

In the early days of natural history, the “horned rabbit” was assumed to be a real, genuine, unique animal because witnesses said so. Early naturalists such as Conrad Gessner, Joris Hoefnagel (16th century) and others depicted the horned hare as a real animal. Later, other natural historians weren’t so sure, but this uncertainty about its existence and speculation on the cause of horned hares undoubtedly sounds like the modern idea of a “cryptid”. There is a good bet that the horned hare was at least somewhat based on the diseased animals.

There is also the wolpertinger, an even more badass bunny with not only antlers, but fangs and wings. Or, it was a more bizarre mashup of various birds, squirrels, and foxes. Again, it’s unclear if the virus-related growths helped spread this story. But if so, it was for inspiration only, because Wolpertingers are absurd in appearance. Depictions of wolpertingers originated in Bavaria where taxidermied hoaxes were popular in the 1800s with tourists. Therefore, it’s reasonable to say that the Wolpertinger was a valid ancestor of the Jackalope.

Wolpertinger edited from Young Hare, a painting of a hare by Albrecht Dürer

Is the Jackalope a cryptid?

The world was a different place centuries (or even decades) ago. Ideas and language change. We know more about what’s in the world and what isn’t.

If we go by the general cryptid definition of “an animal/entity that is believed to be real but not recognized by zoology” then the Jackalope can claim the title of an official cryptid. There have been stories of people claiming to see real jackalopes (as in antlered hares) or infected cottontails. There’s a good chance these have been conflated.

Ample evidence shows that most people are entirely ignorant of wildlife in their own backyard, let alone the zoological catalog of known animals. As with everything else in the modern world, we get our information from popular culture, not too much directly from qualified scientific experts. So, it not surprising that an average person would 1.) not know about Shope papilloma infected rabbits and how they look, and 2.) that there is not such animal as an antlered rabbit. For the latter, we have to understand that basic schooling doesn’t teach zoology, and many kids know nothing about nature. (A high percentage of the population does not understand basic geography or scientific explanations about the earth.) So, it is not surprising to me that some people might think jackalopes are plausible. Their appearance in popular culture might suggest to people who didn’t know any better that they are real. This latest hype about “frankenbunnies” also muddies the waters because people are getting poorly sourced “WTF is that!”-type coverage, instead of factual information.

Branch quotes Loren Coleman who runs the International Cryptozoology Museum regarding his inclusion of the Jackalope in the museum: “I would read visitors’ online comments… and they would say things like ‘I didn’t know that the jackalope really existed.’ ” Coleman continues by explaining he reorganized the exhibit to depict the Jackalope along with other hoaxes. To me, there is a lot to unpack in that anecdote. Do we really know which cryptid is a manufactured hoax, which are imaginary creatures that people wish to be real, which are mistaken IDs influenced by lore and campfire tales, and which are real animals? The line is very blurry and all the information available to most people.

The fact is, Pop Cryptids are what’s happening. Any weird animal that is legendary, mythical, or just plain-old manufactured on a whim are being called “cryptids”. And there is nothing any “cryptozoologist” can do to change it, no matter how much they indignantly rant about it.

A Jackalope design for pins and tees on TeePublic.

People are viewing cryptids through various lenses (zoological, artistic, historical, cultural, etc.) If people wish to believe horned rabbits (jackalopes, wolpertingers, or other variations) are real animals hopping around in an alternative reality, that’s OK by me, as long as they aren’t declaring that in biology class. It’s important to recognize that horned rabbits have a history that can be legitimately viewed with a zoological lens. However, the history is fraught with flips, twists, and turns.

1) Purifica l’aria;
2) Rilascia ossigeno anche di notte;

What happens if I lose power during resilvering of QNAP NAS?

I am upgrading the HDDs on my QNAP TS-432X-eU rack mount NAS. The NAS is connected to a UPS via a USB cable and is set to turn off after 5 minutes if it senses a power loss. What would happen if I were to lose power while resilvering the array? Would it suspend the resilvering, turn off, then resume when power is restored? Or would the array be corrupted?

Should pick up where it left off; nevertheless the UPS and graceful shutdown is always smart for any filesystem.

Trump, Putin conclude high-stakes summit on Ukraine in Alaska. The two leaders began their meeting at the U.S. military Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage at around 11:30 a.m. local time. The event will mark their first face-to-face talks of Trump’s second term and their first meeting in six years, as well as Putin’s first visit to U.S. soil in a decade.

Ukraine strikes Russian port used for Iranian arms shipments, military says. The Olya port is used by Moscow to receive Shahed-type drone components and munitions from Iran, according to the Ukrainian military.

‘Target hit’ — Ukraine strikes oil refinery in Russia’s Samara Oblast, command post in Donetsk Oblast, military says. “The target was hit, with fire and explosions recorded,” the Ukrainian military said.

Ukraine’s long-range strikes cost Russia over 4% GDP in 2025, Kyiv claims. The attacks have cost Russia around $74.1 billion, the Ukrainian military’s strategic communications department (Stratcom) estimates.
