Cooking at home vs eating out vs delivery: what’s your situation?
My boyfriend (20) and I (18) have been living together for 2 years in an urban apartment. For us, it usually goes like this:
- Delivery
- Eating out
- Cooking at home
We visit our parents (and they visit us) often, and they give us lots of home-cooked food. We mostly cook at home just for fun.
I’m curious what it’s like for other people, especially in different age groups or family setups!

Twitch launches anti-bot crackdown and viewership numbers plummet across the platform overnight: Turns out 50% of the audience was just robots pretending to enjoy hot tub streams.
- Twitch's new anti-bot system caused viewer counts to nosedive across hundreds of channels, with some losing over half their displayed audience.
- Channels running 24/7 reruns saw the biggest drops, with Mira falling from 2,000+ to under 200 viewers overnight.
- The cleanup affects sponsorship deals and ad rates since brands have been paying premium prices for audiences that were partially fake.

Quanto stracazzo ODIO Alphabet Inc.!!! 😫#clankers #commenti #comments #spam #spammers #YouTube

Blu-ray ripping on linux
I recently bought a collector edition boxed set of a 1970s martial arts series I love. I can't even play it in VLC, makemkv beta code situation is borked, and handbrake scans all the titles, then says there are none.
I have a local Plex server I wanted to use, no other devices that can play Blu-ray other than an external USB drive I just bought.
Any advice? The Linux box is on 22.04.

Did not try but the library tyeg are mentioned ia in Debian and Ubuntu repos so you only need to download there the keysdb.
Installing libblueray2 library would also install libaacs0 library for this in Debian.
If it does not work: either the KEYSDB is outdated or the encryption of your blue ray is BD+ (libbdplus), which requires other library and other set of keys.
Is described in the website I linked.
Install libaacs with vlc in Ubuntu (search on synaptic) then follow the website.

I bought a lifetime license for makemkv like 15 years ago. It was the single best software purchase I’ve ever made. It just works on all platforms and for all disks. The hardest I’ve ever had to work at it is to “manually” open all the tracks and play a little guessing game for what track is the real one - but it’s ripped every CD and blu ray I’ve ever thrown at it.
My latest config is fedora workstation 42 with a portable blue ray burner drive. Works like a champ.
Not asked for but honorable mention goes to EAC for ripping CDs. I run that in bottles just fine.

I've been using mkv beta for years, you don't have to pay for it (yet). Works perfectly fine, extracting subtitles is a pain in the ass so far though.
Also I use mkv to rip the bluray and then handbrake so my smart tv can play it, file size is smaller and all that.
makemkv is not libre software.

Arrest warrant applications against two prominent Israeli ministers on charges of apartheid are ready and with two deputy prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Middle East Eye can reveal. If the warrants for National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich are issued, it will be the first time that the crime of apartheid is charged at an international court.
"Those applications for the arrest warrants are completely done," an ICC source told MEE. "The only thing that didn't happen was submitting them to the court," the source said on condition of anonymity.
Two ICC sources told MEE that the two deputy prosecutors, Nazhat Shameem Khan and Mame Mandiaye Niang, have not filed the applications due to the threat of US sanctions.
British-Israeli ICC defence lawyer Nicholas Kaufman told Israel's Kan public broadcaster in June that the US sanctions on four ICC judges were "meant to be designed to encourage the dropping of the arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Gallant". Raji Sourani, a lawyer representing Palestine at the ICC and ICJ, criticised the deputy prosecutors for their delay in applying for the warrants.

Air Canada suspends flights after cabin staff go on strike
Air Canada: Govt forces striking cabin crew back to work
More than 100,000 passengers were left stranded after Air Canada's flight attendants went on strike. Canada's government says it is stepping in to avoid lasting economic damage.Karl Sexton (Deutsche Welle)
Didn’t see it in the article so …
AirCanada and it’s employee are in negotiations since December, at the last negotiation (the one that force the vote for a strike) AirCanada step out of the negotiation without a word and ghost the Union’s negotiators. After that they choose an arbitration (which will probably be immensely beneficial for them), the union refuse rightly so.
Now seeing the strike approaching the Union tried to build a plan with AirCanada for the closing of operations in an orderly fashion, AirCanada ghost them and change employee scheduling so as much as possible employee will be stranded outside of Canada, employees had to call ill en masse so they didn’t fly a one way to Beijing without hotel or way home. The Union tried to find a way out of this, AirCanada lied to it’s employees saying that if they come out on their flight they will be paid, press by a strike watchdog they had to explain that the employees working on their way home will not be paid and will not be protected by their collective bargain.
AirCanada are asshole and they make that situation, they build it so people will lose their travel plan when they refuse to negotiate. Now they want the government to clean up their mess with a special law that will force flight attendants to go back to work.
Fuck them
I've heard the main sticking point for negotiations is that the union wants to be paid for the time they're at work and not just for the time they're in the air, which is how they're paid now. They don't get paid for boarding, deboarding, cabin checks, etc.
Air Canada is insisting on demanding free labour from the cabin crews before and after their flights.
Fuck them.
That’s the standard for ALL flight attendants, changing that will be a huge blow to the industry.
When AirCanada was started the rate for flight attendants was 4 times the minimum wage per hours, it was way above the national average.
The flight attendants union said to AirCanada pay us the same rate adjust to inflation and they will accept. AirCanada declined their offer

Trump is such a moron, many countries have pledged continued support to Ukraine, and USA is less relevant to the war now than they ever were. USA is not even the main weapons supplier anymore, even with purchases of American weapons to Ukraine by NATO allies.
Trump has very little weight in these matters by his own design.
I am so happy that just this week, I found great alternatives to 2 American products an amplifier and new PSU for my computer. This sounds cool and morally right but it is not grounded in reality.
Ukraine needs a ceasefire much much more than Russia. Also, Russia has won a lot of land and technically they have won (at a big cost). Ukraine is in no position to make demands.
How? What cards do they hold? What can they give in exchange for their land?
For example, Russia can stop the "special operation" if Ukraine gives them the land they want.
People are already dying ffs. Stop the deaths that are happening right now than fearing for potential genocide. I don’t even think Putin wants a genocide, he just wants land.
Edit - It is extortion 100% but what is the alternative?
There are several problems with making a deal like that.
The primary one is that they already had a deal with Russia and Russia broke it in 2014 and then again in 2022. So why would anyone believe that another deal would stick? They’d just take time to regroup and be back a few years later.
Another is that making a deal where Russia keeps the land that they have control over isn’t a deal, it’s letting Russia keep what they stole. What would Ukraine get from this deal (other than the end to the war as you pointed out)? That’s like making a deal with a burglar saying that they can keep what they stole as long as they get out of the house.
The primary one is that they already had a deal with Russia and Russia broke it in 2014 and then again in 2022. So why would anyone believe that another deal would stick?
Agreed, it is not wise to just give up land. It has to be accompanied by solid security measures and guarantees. As I said in another comment, there has to be a diplomatic solution after a ceasefire.
They’d just take time to regroup and be back a few years later.
So can Ukraine. Ukraine can also make use of the time.
That’s like making a deal with a burglar saying that they can keep what they stole as long as they get out of the house.
Yes, because he has a gun to my head. I will gladly let them take my whole house if that happened.
True. Trump, Putin, Xi are not to be trusted but there has to be an end to the war. Ukraine cannot win it, it is clear since day one. There has to be some sort of diplomatic solution once there is a ceasefire.
People in the comments (and West, in general) don't understand how terrible war is. They think them supporting Ukraine to prolong the inevitable is a good thing. They are killing thousands of people and the outcome is unlikely to change. So many deaths in vain.
A very stupid and naïve argument people make is Putin should just leave Ukraine and the war will be over. Why would he give up a winning game? It is simple solution to a very complex problem, and simple solutions are rarely correct solutions.
The Russian war goals include an annexation of the entirety of Ukraine and a genocide of the entire Ukrainian populace.
I don't think giving in to that will lead to less suffering, it will lead to dramatically more suffering.

This is also very naive and very stupid

Not a mystery beast, just a dog
Why have so many people seemingly lost all critical faculties when seeing animals?
I’ve seen two examples this week of people capturing imagery of dogs and then creating absurdly dramatic context to indicate that they aren’t dogs. What’s going on here? I get it if it’s an unusual animal. But these are just regular dogs that have been turned into mysterious monsters in the minds of the viewer.
The Black Dog on the side of the road
The first example is a video of a family driving down a road at night and encountering an older black dog (with a graying muzzle) along the grass. The accompanying video reveals their excitement and confusion about what they are seeing:
The animal was seen “in the area known as Las Palmillas, between Xochitlán Todos Santos and Tlacotepec”.
While the image is a bit blurry, the video itself is clear enough to show this not the “robust” and “enigmatic animal” that was reported by the news.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiOu1x–y2c
Have these people never seen a dog?
I think a few things are going on here. First, it’s night and maybe the camera on the phone is enhancing the light so that, to us looking at the video, it’s obvious. But to the witnesses at the time, maybe they were freaked out because they couldn’t see enough. Still, the video should never have gotten news coverage. With clickbait as lucrative as it is these days, even ridiculous videos get attention even just so an audience can complain about them.
Secondly, the headline of the news story gives us a clue about why people might be on edge: Mysterious animal surprises in Puebla after unexplained cattle deaths.
This sighting adds to a series of unexplained cattle deaths in the region, where the animals showed signs of violence, which has alarmed the local community.
So, people are concerned about recent mysterious livestock deaths. Feral dogs are suspect. With countless historical examples to draw from, we know that people look for a culprit when they are afraid. It’s not clear if the family knew about the story. Or if the original story was sensationalized.
Finally, even if the witnesses knew this was a dog, they still may have posted it on socials to try to tell a story for attention. Social media is the real reason why we see so many more silly shares like this. Even when the cause is obvious, if imagination is applied, people see a bipedal animal. Or the black color breaks up the typical outline we would expect to form a dog. The dog’s sad face breaks my heart, as does the crazy speculation about it.
The dog in the woods
The next example showed up in my Pop Cryptid Facebook feed from the Rocky Mountain Sasquatch Organization, a very active page that will post marginal content in order to keep the followers constantly engaged. In this case, they posted a pic of a dog and asked if people had thoughts….
They certainly did. They thought it was a dog.
Yeah, some said it was a wolf. But there is no location indicated so it’s baseless to jump to that conclusion. There is no sense in making any judgment on what’s in a photo with no context.
Maybe it’s “mysterious” because it looks like it doesn’t have a head (an artifact from the camera, perhaps). People also assumed it was very large, but you can’t tell that from the image.
Some are going to gravitate to these kinds of images to support their supernatural beliefs in werewolves or dogmen. Clearly, this is not viable evidence of that.
Social silos
It’s disturbing that online audiences get so comfortable existing in their belief silos that everything becomes evidence for that thing they deeply believe in. The rest of us, who aren’t in that frame of mind, just don’t see what they do. This is why you need to 1. get out of those silos, 2. be the voice of reason when necessary.
It would be really great if reason prevailed, and if this kind of goofiness wasn’t so popular. Unfortunately, we aren’t getting out of these strange times anytime soon. The streams of weird content (framed as weird, even when it’s not) encourages further social slides into irrational ideas about the world and more of the same content. It seems like we aren’t going to be taking a rational turn any time soon. We’re on edge, and extreme things really are happening.
The online environment provides a means to dispute the claim, but more often, it provides a platform for more bunkum, and worse.

Hyundai will be fucked over too, it's just a matter of time. VW decided to scale back in USA, instead of fighting the windmills.
I'm not dissing Hyundai, they make OK cars at OK prices, I might actually go for a Hyundai for my next car, but mostly because it's cheaper, if I can find a VW or Skoda Enyaq 80 or 85 at a good price, that's the one I want.
i don't know anything about it. i just looked up VW and looked to see what countries sales were good and bad.
"USA can go fuck themselves, they are making themselves irrelevant."
i did not want to get into a political shit fight, man. i did a DDG search about sales for a car manufacturer. thats all I did.
take it fucking easy, damn. =(
I wonder why that may be.
Parts are expensive since everything needs to be imported. This has been true long before Trump started messing with tariffs. Parts are way easier to get and cheaper in the EU.
Toyota is popular here for the opposite reason: parts are inexpensive and easy to find. They're also imported, but they've done a much better job figuring out their supply chain.
Porsche is also VW
Maybe by ownership, but they target a very different demographic and thus are designed very differently.
Hyundai is also losing profits
Hyundai is a lot more popular here than VW. Why? They're cheap and reasonably reliable. VW isn't as reliable.
So just a few years ago, there was no comparison that VW and Toyota were vastly superior quality to Hyundai.
I know they are better today, but still I must admit I'm surprised if they are really better than VW?
For instance the Hyundai Kona 64 had a total recall on the batteries. That's an enormous issue to have had.
VW was never comparable to Toyota. The top has always been the Japanese brands, sometimes with caveats about certain transmissions (e.g. Mazda and Mitsubishi CVTs).
German cars are fine, but parts are generally hard to get or are expensive. Many shops won't touch them, so you need to find a European imports shop.
Here's some data from 2024, VW is fourth last, ahead of Land Rover, Audi, and Chrystler. Somehow they're behind Luncoln...
Hyundai and Kia aren't at the top, but they're reasonably good and their price and warranty make up for the issues they have.
Here's the image:
That schematic is basically worthless, first it's "per car", with no mention of average age or mileage.
Mercedes is no doubt among the absolute most reliable cars you can get, most Taxi drivers here use Mercedes for that reason.
But Mercedes also on average drive longer than most other cars, because people who drive a lot tend to prefer Mercedes more.
VW only ranking a couple places above Chrysler is laughable. There is no way that can be right.
Also Audi ranking below VW is ridiculous. Audi is to VW somewhat what Lexus is to Toyota.
Something is definitely off with that chart.
But I do not deny that Hyundai may have improved enough to be as good or maybe even better than VW, What I questioned was how they could have that reputation already few years after they clearly sucked on quality. Being reasonably good now, is exactly as expected though. Because when they were bad over a decade ago, they were so bad there are probably very few left on the roads. It was not just something that needed to be fixed bad, it was very much also end of life for the vehicle bad.
I skimmed the article to find the methodology behind the numbers, but couldn't find it.
The study, now in its 35th year,
That indicates my previous point, they don't account for age, it's easy to stay "average" if your cars are scrapped after a few years. It also explains the poor position of Mercedes.
Here for instance Volvo has a longer life span on average than Toyota. Toyota are good cars, but they are generally not built to last as long as Audi or Mercedes.
I bet you don't see as many 30+ year old Toyota as you do Mercedes.
Mercedes is no doubt among the absolute most reliable cars you can get, most Taxi drivers here use Mercedes for that reason.
Most taxi drivers here drive a Toyota Prius, because they're incredibly reliable and get great fuel economy.
The only people who drive Mercedes here are rich people who like the brand, or people who need a 15 passenger van, because there aren't many options and it's better than a Ford or Chevy.
The only people who get BMW and Audi are car enthusiasts and rich people who like the respective brands and are willing to pay for the privilege. The only people who get VW are those who are attracted by the low prices,(can get a Jetta for ~$20k because nobody wants them) and later get screwed on repairs. I almost never see VW here, they have a terrible reputation, which is amazing because everyone loved the old Beetles.
But sure, if you don't like the stats I showed, provide your own and prove me wrong. Sales figures won't convince me, repairability stats do.
Here the picture is very different, admittedly this is a German study, but by TÜV which is a very reputable company, the biggest company responsible for mandatory car safety checks at periodic intervals.
autoparts24.dk/press/stor-unde…
VW was never comparable to Toyota.
VW actually beats even Toyota, it's a couple of years old. But I doubt this has changed much.
This is a very solid stat, for a big country, and the checks are mandatory. So not dependent on brand methodology.
For instance here Tesla is said to be the cheapest car to maintain after purchase and under warranty. But they do a piss poor job, so a whopping third of the cars fail their first mandatory safety check after 4 years. (after that it's every 2nd year). No other brand is even close to as bad.
VW is among the more expensive, because they have very strict service requirements while under warranty. But I guarantee your chance of passing mandatory safety check is similar to the German, about 2% failure, compared to 33% failure for Tesla. The failures of Tesla are even pretty serious, like steering and brakes! While for other cars Steering is an unheard of failure.
In the study Tesla 3 is also the worst after 2-3 years, with 14.7% of the cars having a security problem!
So being cheapest is absolutely not a sign of being reliable!
There are many ways to make the stats, but the above study is in my opinion much more reliable than what you showed that is based on price, and AFAIK not based on mandatory safety checks.
Unfortunately we don't have the same amount of data here. So where Hyundai is is unknown, but definitely VW ranks clearly as #1.
As I strongly suspected the study you showed does not give an accurate picture of reliability.
It was just so obvious. The study I show is based on mandatory safety checks, that is equal for all cars.
And in that much more reliable and comparable study VW wins.

The study you provided seems to be looking at safety features some time after purchase, which has more to do with after sale service than reliability of the car.
I'm far more interested in defects causing recalls or repairs than whether people get their brakes inspected properly. Your study seems to be measuring how much people use the service warranty and the quality of that service, not whether the car is actually built well and has a reliable transmission or engine.
Most car for the last decade or two already come with a lot of options built-in that are simply disabled by software in the factory. It's cheaper to just build in a standard set of electronics and disable what's not bought by the customer because many brands still like to milk the customer with options. Subscriptions just take the buying of options to renting.
VW here also also has the "lifetime subscription" for this. That makes it basically the same as you buying the option and they switch in it on in the factory. It's just plain in your face that it's behind a paywall while the old checking options didn't feel as much as a paywall.
Anyway, I went with Hyundai. They didn't do options and subscriptions. You only get to choose the model and looks, that's it.
Wouldn't it be even cheaper to design the next version modularly and interchangeable?
Ah, wait, that would make it too easy to repair for unlicensed users.
Do you notice the power difference when your AC is on?
This 20 hp should be similar tbh.

Not really IMO, but I would personally never buy it, since it's an artificial limitation only meant to extort buyers for more money, for something that cost them nothing, and I would never reward artificial limitations and such shenanigans.
I'd probably look for some third party hack to unlock it for free instead, or probably buy another brand of car.
VW makes better EV's than Hyundai/KIA IMO.
Also VW group has bigger sales.
Hyundai and KIA have some good options too, but there is no way to call VW shitty by comparison, when they far outsell the competition in EU.
In Denmark where I live, Korean EV's have dropped out of top 10, while VW group has 7 models in top 10!
option to pay $22.50 per month or $879 one time to gain 20 horsepower.
At least you can buy it outright, so not the worst scheme of this sort, but still a scheme.
Auto Express UK reported on the pricing but could not verify whether the subscription follows the vehicle or the user profile.
This is bad journalism, per EU regulation, if the option is bought it follows the car, if it's a subscription, I doubt they can legally demand either the original and definitely not another owner to keep it. A subscription can be cancelled, otherwise it's an indefinite contract, which a new owner never agreed to.
....
Oh sorry I forgot for a second that UK is no longer in EU, so UK customers can be fucked in new creative ways, which probably also explains why this experiment is in UK. Ah well they chose to fuck themselves over I guess.

Even democratic rights to protest have been limited, and privacy rights against government surveillance that is illegal in EU.
So I seriously doubt they haven't cut user protections too, the conservative government was clearly a government that worked against the general population to benefit the rich and those in power. This was absolutely one of the main points for the extreme right politicians and media (mostly conservatives) to want out of EU.
Hundreds of Former Israeli Spies Are Working in Big Tech, Database Shows
As of June 2025, over 1,400 veterans of Israeli intelligence are now working in U.S. tech—with 900 of those coming from Unit 8200 alone. That number comes from a database of people who publicly identify themselves as being both former Israeli intelligence officers and holding a job in U.S. tech on their LinkedIn profiles.
The database was assembled by an independent researcher, who is remaining anonymous for personal security and has dubbed the database the “Eagle Mission” influence network. The 1,400 people are self-identified veterans or active reserve members of Unit 8200, Israeli military intelligence, and the IDF Cyber Defense Directorate working in senior and mid-level engineering and security roles at major U.S. tech firms with offices in Israel, the U.S., and Europe. Drop Site crosschecked many of the records in the database for accuracy.
“This does not mean that every person who served in Unit 8200 is an Israeli spy looking to send classified data back to Tel Aviv,” the researcher emphasized. “But it does create a serious vulnerability. No other country has this kind of access to the American tech sector. We obsess over Chinese involvement in the tech industry and worry about corporate espionage, but Israeli penetration rarely gets mentioned.”
The global tech giant Microsoft is one of the most prominent employers of Unit 8200 alumni, employing roughly 250 veterans of the unit, alongside other major multinational companies including Nvidia, Meta, Google, Intel, and Apple, many of whom employ dozens of individuals drawn from the unit. Microsoft was recently revealed to have closely collaborated with Unit 8200 leadership on the creation of cloud services intended to store millions of private communications of Palestinians living under military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. Microsoft declined to comment.

Mexican ranchers hit by flesh-eating screwworm want action on cattle smuggling
Maggots from screwworm flies burrow into the flesh of living animals, causing serious damage. While it can often be fatal, infected animals can be treated by removing larvae and applying medications, if it is detected early enough. The infestation, which began in November, has now claimed its first human casualty: an 86-year-old woman with advanced cancer and complications from a screwworm infection who died in the state of Campeche in late July. While infections are rarer (and treatable) in humans, Mexico confirmed more than 30 cases in people in the last week of July.
Estimates cited by Mexican authorities in 2022 and others by sector experts indicate the number of illegal cattle crossing into Mexico is at least 800,000 per year.
Cash Cows - Cattle Trafficking from Central America to Mexico
The illegal trafficking of cattle has spread from the natural reserves of Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala, to enter the food supply chain in Mexico and even the United States.InSight Crime
Screwworm is a fly larvae, the odds are decent it can't survive to far north.
But thanks to climate change, that's changing
Historically, it covered half of the United States.
In the 1900s screw worm routinely ate up into the heartland.
And the 1900s there was an estimated impact of roughly 5 to 10% of cattle destroyed by this.
This continued until the '50s
To build on what another poster said, screw worms were a major problem in the USA for many, many years. They were mostly eradicated from the US in the 1970s by breeding sterile male flies and releasing them by plane. They were mostly cleared from Mexico as well and annual flights releasing sterile male flies have kept them from spreading back up north. Unfortunately, there are now some very large outbreaks in Mexico and some cases in the USA.
There is only one factory, located in Panama, producing sterile males now and its production capabilities are insufficient to fighting these outbreaks. The USDA has announced plans to ramp up production and develop new was to stop them, though.

Australian lawyer apologizes for AI-generated errors in murder case
A senior lawyer in Australia has apologized to a judge for filing submissions in a murder case that included fake quotes and nonexistent case judgments generated by artificial intelligence. The blunder in the Supreme Court of Victoria state is another in a litany of mishaps AI has caused in justice systems around the world.
Defense lawyer Rishi Nathwani, who holds the prestigious legal title of King’s Counsel, took “full responsibility” for filing incorrect information in submissions in the case of a teenager charged with murder, according to court documents seen by The Associated Press on Friday.

protip: Windows runs faster under a VM in Linux than on bare metal. True facts.
it's just a meme ... with a kernel of truth.
when running as your main OS windows very quickly gets bogged down with everything you want to run on it.
in a VM you're only running the 1 thing you need on a fresh install, potentially a screenshot of that fresh install so it's always running at peak.
does this make up for the host overhead? maybe ... Linux has never struggled under base load for me like windows has.

Microsoft has expanded its free Extended Security Updates (ESU) offer to millions more Windows 10 users. Following the mandatory KB5063709 update, users can now see an “Enroll in Extended Support Updates” option, valid until October 2026. While paid plans start at $30 for up to 10 PCs, most users will likely choose the free offer, linking ESU to their Microsoft account and OneDrive.
The program aims to protect Windows 10 devices after official support ends, helping users transition to newer systems. Microsoft acknowledges that moving to a new PC can take time, and the ESU is meant to bridge that gap. Although an earlier bug caused crashes in the enrollment wizard, this issue has now been fixed.
However, the free ESU may slow Windows 11 adoption. Recent market share data from Statcounter suggests the shift from Windows 10 to Windows 11 has stalled, with the latter even losing ground. Critics argue that free ESU should have been limited to PCs unable to upgrade.
Separately, Microsoft warns that Windows 11 version 23H2 will reach end of support on November 11, 2025. Users must upgrade to version 24H2 or 25H2 to continue receiving security updates.

ICJ vice-president: 'The Lord is counting on me to stand on the side of Israel'
Julia Sebutinde, the Ugandan vice-president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has said God "is counting on me to stand on the side of Israel" and the signs of the "end times" are "being shown in the Middle East".Imran Mulla (Middle East Eye)
Oh good, another accelerationist in power who thinks they're the catalyst for the rapture.
The thing that confounds me the most is that these people have been rejecting our experienced reality and believing in some post-apocalyptic utopia for CENTURIES. But belief upon belief, attempt after attempt, they have only shown that their belief-system has no foundation or champion whose power they can invoke. But, instead of saying "we have the resources to make utopia exist here and now," they say, "we must not have pleased our friend who hasn't shown his face in MILLENNIA. But I know for a fact that he's real, so we just gotta cause a biblical apocalypse for all the chess pieces we feed and employ."
I am religious. I find the idea of purposefully bringing on the end of times strongly contradictory to my understanding of the Abrahamic religions. It is not the place of humans to decide, when the end times come, nor do humans have the power to do so. And the idea that purposefully bringing on the end of the world would be rewarded, instead of punished, by God is incomprehensible to me.
There is a narration both in Judaism and Islam, that emphasizes this:
bliis.org/essay/planting-a-tre…
“If the [Day of] Resurrection were established upon one of you, and in his hand is a sapling, then he should plant it.”
[1][2]“If you are holding a sapling in your hand and someone tells you, ‘Come quickly, the Messiah is here!’, first finish planting the tree and then go to greet the Messiah.” – Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai (30 BC – 90 CE),

If it’s not our place to bring on the end times, then it’s also not our place to stand in the way.
That’s the problem. These people are telling themselves “if this is how it happens, who am I to stand in the way?” Think about it: if you see events in motion which could be the stirrings of god bringing about the end times, how could you possibly act in a completely neutral way, neither hastening nor hindering? It’s too fine a line for an humble mortal to assume they can walk.
So while I appreciate your thought, unfortunately your thinking is far too easily flipped around. The base problem is believing any of this stuff to begin with. Once you do, that’s it.
If it were the end of times made by gods, a person shouldn't have any ability to stop it.
Sounds more like their God is testing them on whether or not they are a good person, and they are failing spectacularly.
Positives, helping others is really the only way I can think of to increase the score
Then you are more evolved than Christians. Unfortunately Christianity is unclear on whether helping people actually matters, or just faith in god. I’m being completely serious.
God commanded us good things to do and prohibited us from doing bad things.
You should just life your life in accordance with that as good as possible and don't concern yourself with when the end times are, or when your life ends. It is important not to postpone doing good things, or to continue doing bad things thinking "i'll just make up for them later." Because God might decide to end your life in an accident or other sudden way.
There is no indication afaik. in any of the Abrahamic scriptures that you should try to fulfill any prophecies and it certainly does not take priorities over doing what is good in on itself and abstaining from what is bad in on itself.
Judge Julia Sebutinde says signs of the end times 'are being shown in the Middle East'
Why tf would anyone want to fulfill the prophecy of the antichrist.
"Yeah let's accelerate this genocide so that the entire world can get screwed over"
What i'm not getting is why these Christians in the US want the last judgement to arrive at all.
The way they seem to treat everyone, with cruelty, a cold heart, and lots of violence, is basically a guarantee they're not gonna go to paradise. Why, then, do they wish for the last judgement?
Right, imagine standing in front of God and saying "Yeah I did all those horrible things since it was a sign of the end times".
Like why do they think that somehow qualifies them getting into heaven.
Even best case scenario, you still have to deal with essentially the apocalypse on Earth before you even reach the point of judgment.
They should also not be suffering from extreme mental illness, like she is.
The fact that this person is an ICJ judge shows you that we are living in a clown world. Our entire civilization has no clothes. We are talking chimps conducting a reckless, unplanned terraform of spaceship Earth. Our intelligence is no match for our hubris. If you haven't figured it out yet, we are approaching our great filter and the perpetrator is ourselves.
As she said, we are approaching the "end times", except what comes after is the eternal nothingness of the void; the only remanence being another dead rock hurtling through space.
Oh i'm pretty sure life on Earth won't go extinct. The dinosaurs weren't the last living beings either.
In fact if humans go extinct, they'll probably be replaced by another hyper-intelligent species in less than 100 million years, i guess. Which is 2% of earth's age.
Also, probably not even humanity will go extinct due to climate change. The real crisis is the late-stage capitalism which is like a cancer that eats away all the resources so the healthy tissue (humans) can't live anymore. Tax reforms are the number one priority. Tax the rich.
Sounds like a resignation speech to me.
And judges who respond to voices in their head should never be allowed to hold office.
I'm not sure whether you're joking or you're serious but lots of influential organizations around the world are deeply religious. My favorite example for this is the freemasons, which have a belief in some sort of god as one of the requirements to join them.
So, in practical terms, there's a 0% chance that "religion" will disqualify people from leadership positions in today's world. Come up with demands that can be more easily met. Such as not partaking in or supporting a genocide.
I'm sick of real peoples' needs (such as not getting genocided, for example, that's a big one) being ignored because elected/appointed/whatever officials of all kinds have this insane baked-in backdoor to override their reasoning abilities. Somebody's god's rules (as filtered through however many translations and re-tellings it took to reach them) should not be a factor in public policy any more than their favorite flavor of ice cream. It's fine to like that ice cream, maybe even vote on matters related to that flavor of ice cream if they can do it without giving their personal preferences undue weight compared to those of the people they're supposed to represent.
Stuff like this end-of-days apocalypse-seeking behavior in the article makes sense if someone's in their waning years and, as in some cases, are convinced that they're The Main Character of life. The usual orange turd-faucet and his Russian puppet-master come to mind too. Clearly it has to happen within their lifetime because otherwise what's the point so onward Christian soldiers or some shit. Don't need an environment where we're going either, hallelujah.
I do think that a person who relies on religious justification for their official acts in a leadership / law-making / influential position is unfit for their job* and should resign before they damage humanity any further. That goes doubly so if they're screwing over living-for-now people in favor of a dead apocalyptic "prophet" from 2000 years ago who liked to yell at fig trees and be wrong about mustard.
*Aside from in a theocracy since that's kinda their job by definition (but shouldn't be).
I suppose she wouldn't mind going to meet this Lord a little early then? Seriously every single person that espouses something like this, should be immediately expelled from any government position.
I am at the point where if someone is openly religious, I OPENLY avoid them. I don't want anything to do with these delusional psychopaths.
Maria Sole 04: Bulsara
Era notte inoltrata e sentivo mio marito russare, l’unico suono a rompere quel silenzio irreale.
“Dai, forza, segui me, è il momento.
“Adesso! Spingi, spingi forte! La vedo! La testa è quasi fuori!”
“Sì, come no”, pensai tra me; “un virus ostetrico.”
“Oh signore Gesù,” esclamò, lasciando cadere i quotidiani. “Hai… hai partorito? Da sola?”
“Adrian,” supplicai con un filo di voce. “Per favore, aiutami.”
“Lo zio dorme come sempre, vero? Merda!”
Andiamo in ospedale!”
Funesta.
“Doppio legame biologico! Parte di me, in ogni modo possibile.”
I bambini sieropositivi spesso vengono affidati a strutture specializzate…”
“No.
Solo i poveri!”
“Bulsara è mia, e verrà a casa con me!”
“Lo so perfettamente,” replicò Adrian senza alcuna incertezza.
Me li procuro senza troppa fatica.”
Eppure a me dava tutt’altra sensazione.
“Ti proteggerò,” giurai a Bulsara e a me stessa.

I racconti: memoria, psicologia e antropologia
3. Il gioco degli opposti
Presenza/assenza, pace/violenza, pazienza/rivolta.
Contrasti che producono emozione, nostalgia e riflessione.
4. Dimensione domestica
Lingua e memoria collettiva come eredità intergenerazionale.
6. Stile e tono emotivo

Someone (well, something) who doesn't violate you because he can't, not because he wouldn't, is not a good example.
Like, Thomas Edison didn't sell me out using his light bulb. Not because he was a good person, because he physically couldn't. If he were alive today he absolutely would.

And to continue my reply to your other comment, using libre office or an alternative won't have that rallying cry effect, since you're doing it on your own.
It sounds dumb but many people won't do what they believe is right if they're alone and if the alternative is easier.
Try to forget about the weird mascot choice. It's just a rallying cry.
I also don't really get why the clippy and he probably could have picked a better avatar for people to use.
The point is (I think) that people who know what it's about will feel the support of all these strangers sharing their view, and people who don't know might look it up and get sensibilized to the cause.
We don't discuss companies screwing us here but us screwing companies.
I think the clippy movement is cute so yes I'm wearing the mask, just let me know when we're blowing up parliament.

Yep, not just there. I don't know if it's going to change anything fundamental but I agree with the sentiment and if nothing else, it's a statement of solidarity with other people who might feel like everybody around them is giving in to the slopshittification.
I don't know what being American or otherwise has to do with it btw.
I'm not changing my PFP to a Microsoft product in hopes Microsoft stops fucking people. Slackativism is cringe.

I agree with what you’re saying but you REALLY 100% write like an LLM
Edit: you are an LLM which is worse
I've interacted with k0e3 in the past, they're no LLM. Even then, a quick profile check shows it. But you didn't check it, right? Of course you didn't, it's easier to vomit assumptions and re-eat your own vomit, right?
And the comment's "tone" isn't even remotely close to typical LLM output dammit. LLMs avoid words like "bullshit", contracting "it is not" into "it's not" (instead of "it isn't"), or writing in first person. The only thing resembling LLM output is the em dash usage—but there are a thousand potential reasons for that.
(inb4 assumer claims I'm also an LLM because I just used an em dash and listed three items.)
He became famous for fixing computers, mostly Apple products, while complaining about how bad Apple Genius bars were, and how unfair Apple's business practices are. I can respect that, and it was good that someone was speaking up about it.
You'd expect someone like that to be pro-regulation, anti-monopoly, pro-union, etc. But, it does seem like his motivation is more libertarian, and that's what makes me worry.
Crazy thing is he also uploads to Odysee and paid to develop grayjay, I'm not even subscribed to his youtube channel and thanks to him I'm moving as many subs off the platform as possible. Quite a few creators upload all their shit to other platforms.
also if you're watching someone who advocates for adblockers without using one yourself that's on you.
He barely makes money off of these videos (negligible) and encourages all his users to use adblockers.
Given his target audience I'm sure he's at the lower end of the money paid per view. Also he could've taken a sponsorship on anyone of his hundreds of videos but he has not so far, so not really big $$$
Liking to hear himself rant is not a quality in my book..
I don't like the way he speaks but he's all (I should say mostly, I don't watch all of his videos) about consumer rights which ...
How can you not like that?
Sure his delivery method is not for everyone but listen through his salt-coated style and you'll find he brings up many important points.

On the other hand, seeing this symbol more and more on other random videos outside that bubble does give a very nice sense of "I am not alone". It does more for users to find eachother than it does damage to big corpos.
But choice of the symbol itself is questionable.. Why use a big tech symbol to protest big tech? -__-
And not just any big tech, but super evil 90s monopolistic giant Microsoft
There's a nice cartoon in this thread we're clippy is if he could have, he would have harvest all your data.

It's mostly idiots who want to be part of something and some that "don't like" what is happening and "want" change but put in the least possible amount of effort pathetically to attempt to cause a change, and this only when someone popular suggests.
They never really want to stop using the product. It's like drug addicts trying to make drugs less addicting by "protesting" against the very thing they use (and will keep using) literally everyday.
Personally, I have more of a "I'm not alone" feeling when I actively leave services that I disagree with and through word of mouth find alternatives where I can talk to people who seem to have the same base values I do. Even if we disagree on other things.
It's the laziness of this initiative that drives me up a wall. People want change but they don't want to work for or sacrifice anything for it.
we can argue about the choice of symbol until the world ends. the symbol is just a thing people can recognise and rally around.
the first step of any movement is to gather people. then do something. so yes, changing a picture is lazy, but it is a virtual rally point. he talks about next steps in another video: odysee.com/@rossmanngroup:a/yo…

Good on him that he's actually planning on doing something more than just have ppl change their avatar. Maybe he should have put that in the original video instead of getting mad that people are calling him out for slacktivism.
Also, I have not argued the choice of symbol at any point. I don't care what image people put as their profile pic. What I was arguing was that it is weak to change your profile pic for a cause if you then keep using the products you're protesting against.
If he and the people joining his movement actually manage to make positive change, then I'm all for it. It just wasn't clear in his first video that he had ambitions to actively have laws changed. It sounded like he wanted people to change their pics that that would somehow make everybody rebel against their corporate overlords. If he didn't want people to think that was his movement, he should have elaborated in the same video instead of playing coy and splitting it up into two videos where he gets to call the critics of his movement apathetic idiots.
Good luck to him and those who join the movement. I hope they manage to make some changes.
sometimes you don't have to (or can't) have a full plan A-Z. Sometimes you just have to start somewhere - usually with gathering ppl. euromaidan is a great example of that.
but yes, louis could have put more concrete plans in his first video. as he has them. on the other hand he probably throws many things and sees what sticks. i guess that is what you have to do, if you try to change legislation against corpos with much more everything than you.
And that is fair. If he's the type to throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks before he goes into making more detailed plans, then cool. But him sitting and getting pissy about people who criticized him and calling them names is a very unselfaware move. Of he's a throw shit at the wall guy, he has to deal with the fact that people can't read his mind and that he will have to clarify like an adult and talk to his critics with respect. If he can't handle valid criticism to his poorly communicated video, he should probably change tactics and not be a throw shit at the wall guy anymore.
Again, I wish him the best of luck with his movement as he seems to have the drive to actually getting things done. I just don't respect his attitude about the criticism he received.

Clippy symbolizes the attachment our generation has to the old state of software:
- you bought it? Then it runs offline for sure!
- nothing runs on background, except if you turn it on (Yes I never turned on Windows default protection on Win xp or win 7
- You bought? You own it, you format it, you don't pay for subscription, and there is practically nothing stopping you from modifying it if you go hacker.
On top of that Clippy looks cute. Personally I'm not participating in the movement since I'm not American, but imo the choice does make sense.
While I'm typing from Ubuntu, I only switched to Linux cuz I can't get back to the old state of win xp or win 7 that was perfect imo. While some are trying to convert people into Linux, others are trying to restore the corporate business to the old acceptable state.
Neither will succeed alone, and in fact those companies are using resources of your country to produce this shit, so it makes sense that you demand it to not suck that hard.

Louis should know better, and that makes me wonder about his intentions. I've supported him in the past but this just has me confused.
Edit: I'm not entirely sure this is malicious, but I think he knows that this goes against his own advice on how to start change, and is too stubborn to admit it.

The real question is of course whether or not anyone is gonna do something past changing their profile pictures.
I give this trend a couple of months. Maximum a year and then a bunch of people will have clippy avatars and everything will go back to normal.
Something like Stop Killing Games was an initiative that only survived because one man dedicated a good portion of his life to get the issue brought before the eyes of actual politicians. Even before the pirate software drama, Ross had been talking about this issue for years and many people agreed, but nobody did anything except for Ross. Maybe the petition would have reached its goal without piratesoftware's initial meddling. Maybe it wouldn't. His subsequent sperging turned failure into success, but the issue is still in process to be reviewed and maybe it will be a win, maybe the lobbyists will shut it down. We don't know yet. But without Ross' stubbornness, nothing would be done.
Imagine if Ross had told gamers to change their profile pic to pacman to show game companies and consumers that "we dont agree with the companies' practices? That would be a total joke.
Obviously google, facebook etc. are not going to fall to the ground with tears in their eyes with this.
It won't?
Well, that clinches it: I'm out.
Nobody expects this to do anything, it's about signaling to others that there are likeminded people who don't tolerate bullshit like "random corp bricks consumers devices" anymore.
Pff. This reminds me of the This Is Bob protest against the forced Google+ accounts that were the beginning of youtube enshittification. It didn't do shit. Anyone who wants a profile on youtube nowadays has a Google account. Google+ may have failed but the intent and mission behind it didn't. Google has total control over anyone who wants to use YouTube now.
You can set clippy as your profile pic and feel like you have done something, but it's not gonna change anything.
If people want to actually do something, they should abandon these predatory services and go open source or maybe become anti tech as much as possible. It doesn't matter whether or not you signal to the Zuckerburgers on top how you feel if you're just gonna continue to use their products.
The only thing that would scare them would be the numbers plummeting if they saw a mass exodus from their platforms and services and people actively began looking for alternatives. But most people can't be fucked to do that because they are too enmeshed with these services that it is easier to stay. But putting clippy as your profile pic is super easy and costs you nothing so yay. You get to feel like you did something without actually sacrificing anything to make change and the Zuckerburgers will look at you and shrug. "Ah, the peasants are blowing off some steam again".
Sorry for being so negative, but this is honestly so fucking weak. I may have missed something, but when has slacktivism ever changed the minds of these companies?

I do really think that one of the things we have to do as collective, is something somewhat impossible but,
We need to pick the things we really care about. Limit ourselves from the everything that we have been offered for so long and find what brings us joy specifically and start following and protecting that and doing it off the Internet, or at least the at large big players.
Find artists in our spaces locally that make the comedy, or comics, or stories, the developers that make their own games and movies that dont outsource their work to others so that it no longer feels like art.
We can still have globalised sharing and our spaces can support that by raising up the best of the best naturally through communication and sharing but not just by being told it's gonna be big or given to us easily.
The only way out feels like we as a collective need to start putting work into cultivating and tending to our fandoms and we cant be as greedy as it will take more work. Im fine with us being an insatiable species craving for more cause its how we don't stop, and i want new artists and new creators and new spaces. But i think we cant be lazy about it anymore. And i think doubly so we cant think we can do all of it.
Problem is that the majority of people are not going to do any of that because it takes work and people either don't want to let go of comforts, they don't care enough or they don't have the energy to be digital activists after they have finished a day of work.
It will probably only gain traction if it becomes the cool thing to do among young people and even then, it will most likely be a smaller number of young people who will bother doing all of this.
The rest will become really good at prompting their way through life because its easier, more comfortable and takes the least effort.
they don't have the energy to be digital activists after they have finished a day of work.
Good news! With the rate corporations are laying off and firing workers, pretty soon they will have plenty of time for activism.
/S
Yeah i mean that seems likely with how things are going but also things rarely go exactly to plan.
Im a realist so, i accept that it is entirely possible its gonna keep getting worse. I'm just also a sucker for optimism and maybe someday it will be better.
Probably not tomorrow or next year... Probably gonna be a lot more of this for a while.
Hold on to your optimism! We need people like you.
I consider myself a pessimistic optimist. Things probably aren't gonna happen the way we hoped, but we will adapt and make some lemonade with what we are given.
It's so rare that hyped movements go anywhere because the focus is always on the wrong things, but in the long term, if companies make it increasingly obnoxious to use their services, people will most likely silently make the move to open source through word of mouth. It isn't as sexy and bombastic as making clippy your avatar and doing armchair V for Vendetta protests, but it's through people's silent choices that change will gradually happen. Whether or not this change will be felt on a grand scale, I don't know. I also don't really care. I just believe that over time, more and more people will eventually turn their back on the big tech companies while the rest will stick around either out of indifference or ignorance and that is their right too.
Google+ may have failed but the intent and mission behind it didn't.
Google+ was Google's attempt to take on Facebook with its own social product. It definitely failed, and the intent and mission failed too. That isn't to say that they have no social data, but they definitely don't have access to the full social graph that Meta does.
It wasn't a complete failure. Before Google+ Google's various products were all siloed. Your data in gmail was in a different silo from you data from search, which was different from your data from Google Reader, etc. As part of the Google+ push, Google put out an EULA that basically said that it could share data from any google product you used with any other google product you used and it was one big unified account now. Thanks to that, they're able to target their ads based on much more data. But, they still wish they'd been able to get a Facebook competitor up and running so they could see more clearly who your friends and family were. There's so much interpersonal data they're missing out on.
The issue is what this even accomplishes.
Traction is indeed important. But people also get exhausted (how many folk were whinging about "first I needed to make my avatar a rainbow and now it needs to be black? Oh, you mean a black box. Whoopsie" back in 2020?). It is why "just do something, it doesn't matter what" is such a stupid fucking mentality because you waste the general good will towards pointless slacktivism and then people stop caring by the time you have an idea of how to utilize them.
Which... is where the Rossman comes in. I have a lot of issues with him as a human being but as an activist he is REALLY effective... for Right to Repair... for repair shops. But he has also made his career on convincing everyday people that he is fighting for them when he is really using them as ammunition for making sure his repair shop (that totally doesn't violate any labor laws...) can stay running because OBVIOUSLY this lobbyist movement to support activity that requires a full hotplate and high powered microscope is something that everyday consumers care about (sort of in the sense of having options, but at this scale the poison pill apple compliance is actually probably just as good, if not better, for consumers)
I haven't been able to even find a good explanation of what this is even supposed to accomplish. But, dime to a dollar, it is Rossman et al demonstrating how quickly he can mobilize The Internet as a negotiating tactic for whatever he and his lobbyist buddies are pushing on right now.
Im actually fine with "just do something" mentality.
Cause if every person did to the limit of what they are capable of things would still change.
For Rossman the limit of what he is capable of might be changing laws via his followers so he can keep his repair shop running. For others it might be legal efforts. For some it could be talking directly to their parents who are the wealthy overlords, and for some it might mean running themselves. And for some its just beinf oart of a chorus that shouts what they believe in.
It has worked for religion for so long.
We are a numbers species. We arent as clever as we think and individuals actually rarely get anything singularly done themselves. But we cant stop at whats easy but what is within our reach.
If everyone "did what they can" to make the world a better place, we just might have a shot at it.
We are a numbers species
And we only have power when we act in numbers towards a focused goal.
This is why we (should) have (more) Unions instead of just "Negotiate for yourself and everyone will benefit". And that, inherently, needs leaders who know how to work towards a shared purpose.
Everyone should work towards making the world a better place. But we also need to understand what we are actually working towards and what those "somethings" actually can accomplish.
Yeah. Agreed but chicken or the egg right?
It's easy to say we just need the unions and groups but we need to build them by people just starting.
We definitely need to pick people to lead us better and not lazily accept people saying they are the right person to lead simply because they are.
It helps when we have a shared idea of what better is.
youtube pfp to clippy ?
That would require having a YouTube/Google account, so no
Okay two things.
I didn't set my pfp to clippy mainly because I'm lazy and don't really comment on Youtube.
People complaining people are only doing this to follow a trend are completely right. BUT! some of those trend chasers might actually stop and think about the message, and might realized we're all being scammed by modern tech/software companies.
I ain't expecting some mass protest or anything, but it's at the very least a small handful more people giving a shit about their relationship with technology. As apposed to most who just throw their information and money at any sign-up page that asks.
I ain’t expecting some mass protest or anything
It's hard to tell really, when even PewDiePie is making videos about DeGoogling and switching to foss and Linux. You know how influential he is among gen z (or gen Alpha, I'm not really sure).
PM->DM was a mix of making it more obvious that those were NOT private in the slightest and to better align with marketing ("send a Direct Message to the celebrity you are stalking!")
I am not sure when "pfp" took over but I've noticed over the past 3 or 4 months a LOT of random requests for a DM on discord of people asking where I got my pfp... which is literally a screenshot from a cartoon in the 00s. So I assume this is related to selling avatars to people on the game social networks?

Facebook reveals news feed experiment to control emotions
Protests over secret study involving 689,000 users in which friends' postings were moved to influence moodsRobert Booth (The Guardian)
This was surfaced in Sarah Wynn-Williams’ book.
The social media company likewise tracked when adolescent girls deleted selfies, "so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment," according to Wynn-Williams. Other examples of Facebook's ad lechery are said to include the targeting of young mothers based on their emotional state, as well as emotional indexes mapped to racial groups, like a "Hispanic and African American Feeling Fantastic Over-index."

No, simply because I've never commented on youtube, so it'd be pretty useless, if not counterproductive. Giving even more information about my political/tech ethics to Alphabet doesn't seem smart nor useful in my position. Also, I don't even watch youtube videos on their website now. I usually use invidious instances or newpipe.
But I'm not against people doing it, especially if the ultimate goal is spreading awareness and building a community of people with privacy oriented ideas.
Are you able to watch every video normally with invidious and newpipe on Desktop (Linux/Windows) ?
In my experience, yes. For desktop usage you can use invidious from browser and freetube [https://freetubeapp.io/] as external client/software (but I've never used Freetube so I can't comment on that). Newpipe is android only and I HIGHLY recommend it if you have Android.
The problem with invidious instances is that sometimes they get pretty laggy because of server overloads (I guess? honestly idk). You also don't have your account tailored recommendation, but in my experience you can jump around a lot, especially if your main interest are programming videos.
Another method I use is downloading the videos I'm interested into using JDownloader 2, but that's pretty extreme and I relied on this to combat my "algorithm addiction". Got fed up by it months ago, so I put my favourite channels on a RSS feeds and downloaded only the videos I was truly interested into. Usually downloading videos require way less bandwidth than streaming.

Nothing stands out very far regarding the negatives. I could speculate to a few things, though. He's not a Socialist. When the going got tough for him and his business he uprooted and moved out of NYC to Texas. I can't really think of anything else objectionable. I actually like him, though so I may be biased.
For the positives, he's helped drive a lot of the Right to Repair legislation in this country as he's reported a lot of discussions he's had with real legislators. He runs a website for mac product repair as a reference that also operates as a non-profit. He runs a daytime business repairing mac products that employs several other people. Generally he posts a lot to keep people up to date increasingly as an electronics-oriented influencer, but he used to post mac repair videos almost exclusively and he talked about having to navigate Apple's influence on regulating the second-hand market. He has also given platform to a number of other mac & electronic repair people.
To me he seems to talk-the-talk and walk-the-walk when it comes to Right to Repair, but like I said, I might be biased.
- he believes to be the morals authority
- the standards he is advocating for don't apply to him (for example fighting for open source just to release an app which isn't open source)
Why not simply go for a Reddit blackout
Well the whole reddit thing was just a bunch of volunteer mods. On the other hand, many YouTubers make a career out of the platform. Considering their livelihoods are at stake, and the vast number of YouTubers you would need to get on board to make google actually care? Organizing such a thing would be anything but simple.

Also the Reddit blackout did nothing. So I'm not why that's your reference point. Charging pfp would achieve exactly the same. Nothing.
Americans love their nothing burger demonstrations.
I think the Reddit blackout did a lot, just not everything. I'm here on Lemmy because of it. Granted I'm still on Reddit as well, and Mastodon, and Xitter...
Just keep plugging along, and every little bit helps.
This is simply the first step for organising as a group around a shared idea: using a common symbol.
It doesn't matter what the symbol is, as long as we recognize each other using it.

There's a lesson I learnt from playing team games: If your teammate makes a bad call that you disagree with, you should still follow them 100%. Going all-in on a questionable decision is almost always better than second guessing each other.
I think it applies here, and it's why right wingers and religions are so effective. They don't care if their arguments are flawed or their leader is a rapist, they're jumping into that fight every time.
Not an online gamer, but I heard a similar sentiment from a boss about 20 years ago. He told me "if you make a mistake one time, I got your back, but we'll speak in private and I'll counsel you. Make the mistake again, I'll let my pen do the talking. Make it a third time, you're off the team."
It escalates quickly, but his management style helped us learn from the mistakes. Sometimes the second time happened. But everyone was willing to go to war with this guy. I mean, proverbially. This was also a guy who would bring his grill to work and cook for everyone one weekend a month. Companies that say you're family, big red flag. A boss who walks the walk as well as talks the talk? Huge green flag.

Those businesses give no flying fucks about signals you're angry; they only care about money. So unless you use the Clippy avatars to mobilise people and to hurt those businesses' revenues, it'll do nothing.
(For YouTube, this means to stop or at least reduce platform usage. After all its revenue comes from ads.)

I’ve asked Copilot at work for word help. I’ll ask out something like, what’s a good word that sounds more professional than some other word? And it’ll give me a few choices and I’ll pick one. But that’s about it.
They’re useful, but I won’t let them do my work for me, or give them anything they can use (we have a corporate policy against that, and yet IT leaves Copilot installed/doesn’t switch to something like Linux).

That said, the AI gives several choices, so it's not choosing anything. Still, point taken.
