This is so great, I feel like whenever this idea comes up it's just so difficult to explain to people what it would feel like to use. (and why it's helpful!)
You talked about changing the address yourself in the browser bar which is already easier than loading up your home server and going through the step to lookup. For me what excited me about this idea was that people could be displaying the links in pages. You often see it with a socials section at the bottom of someone's blog, they link to their profile on their server when what I want them to link to is their profile with the web+ap protocol.
But this leads to another big UX problem, the links are useless if you don't have a handler registered. There is no fallback mechanism your browser will just ask you what you want to open it with and have an empty list of suggestions. So I think it would need to have a recognizable way to be communicated to the user, a consistent icon for the link and a memorable name because only people who knew they set up a handler would want them.
This is a pass at implementing a web-based protocol handler which could be used to create URLs that reference remote users or posts, but that open locally at your home server.

Curious... because when I open magnet:// links, there's no confirmation on subsequent links once I've done the initial handler assignment. It looks to be something reserved for web+ handlers, which is a little annoying, isn't it.
You're absolutely right about the mobile browsers sadly, but support on mobile apps is good. The UX there is better than it is on desktop browsers too, because it can be registered in the app manifest and doesn't require complicated approval and handler selection flows. People are also more familiar with links that look a certain way opening in their related app, it's just that they expect the behavior at the host level instead of the protocol level.

It's a good idea, but fedi is maybe too broad to be useful? I wouldn't want a Lemmy post to open in Mastodon, and pretty sure opening a Mastodon post in Lemmy is impossible unless the post was directed to a community.
web+threadiverse could solve that issue but that's kinda hacky. Maybe the real solution is to improve Lemmy and Mastodon so that they are capable of doing these things decently.
I was actually thinking of making a browser extension that handles this instead. Each Fediverse software could write something to window.fediverse or something like that, with tags for group support or micro blogging. The extension could have methods to infer these values for existing platforms. But the extension could give a dialog box to redirect, based on your preferred instances for certain tags.
Fedilinks website lists 3 MastoAPI clients, but the list is incomplete. I saw Fedilinks being mentioned in changelogs of other clients too.
There was also an Akkoma PR, it was closed by the author: akkoma.dev/AkkomaGang/akkoma/p…. I don't quite understand the reasoning, perhaps @smitten could clarify.

It raises a good point though, where if you serveweb+ap://, it's not understood by clients that are not aware of this scheme. If there were a way a client could communicate whether there is a protocol handler registered, then the server could tailor its response.
Glad to see more people having this idea! The problems we ran into were in helping the browser understand the address and know where to forward. Each server implements lookup routes differently, so there's not necessarily a generic path that you can trust is available on https on the person's home server, even if you know their home server origin. So in some ways the feature should be offered by your home server software, maybe offering a website that does the handler registration to its known lookup/redirect address.
But that is limiting in a few ways. It's a lot of extra steps for each person to do (browsers' default UI for registering protocols is not obvious or easy). It doesn't carry over to different devices, and if you have more than one home server in some way, you are back dealing with that not-great browser UI to pick which handler you want.
In general people are more accustomed to registering protocols to apps they have installed, especially phone apps. It's much easier to register them there and you don't have to have approval flow UI, but taking that approach moves this whole served handler route out of the backend again, so we have to start thinking more along the lines of web+ap-compatible servers that handler clients know how to call or bounce to.
Do you know what is the status of Fedlilinks? Has it been abandoned? FEP-07d7 was withdrawn, and other proposals have even less support than these two.

Two new rules have been added to this community, and they deserve some explanation.
Inspired by this comment, I started thinking about why so many gaming spaces feel shallow or exhausting.
The problem is that they are rarely about video games themselves. Instead, they become about “being a gamer”—a label, an identity, and a consumer tribe. That identity is built on cycles of hype, outrage, loyalty to platforms, and endless talk of hardware or marketing. It flattens games into consumable products, and the people into market demographics.
That’s not the kind of community I want to build. I’m here because I see games as art, and I want to share that perspective with others who think the same way. If someone views games mainly as a lifestyle accessory, or if their whole identity is wrapped up in consumption, then this space will feel alien to them—and that’s intentional.
Which is why the first new rule is simple: “This is not a gamer identity space.” It sets the boundary clearly. We don’t need the baggage of gamer identity here. This community isn’t a loyalty badge, it’s a place for deeper thought.
The second new rule grows directly out of the first: “Talk about games as art.” If games are art—and they are—then the most interesting conversations we can have are about design, aesthetics, mechanics, and meaning.
What is this game trying to say? What choices did the creators make, and why? How does its structure, its tone, or its style affect the way we experience it? These are the kinds of questions that lift discussion beyond consumption and into critique, interpretation, and appreciation.
I added this rule because I’ve seen firsthand what happens when you try to talk about games in this way elsewhere. In another gaming community (which doesn’t need to be named), I made the mistake of approaching the medium with positivity and seriousness—treating it as art worth celebrating.
The reaction was hostility. People saw appreciation as “shilling,” and thoughtful discussion as a threat to their outrage-driven culture. That told me all I needed to know: rather than fight to carve out space in communities built on negativity, it’s better to establish one that starts with positivity and respect for the medium itself.
So that’s the point of these two new rules. They’re not just lines in a list—they’re the foundation for what kind of community this will be. A place where games are treated as works of art, not consumer trophies. A place where we discuss choices, meaning, and design, not just hardware wars or outrage cycles.
This is a place where positivity is not only welcome but expected.

The man noticed that posts encouraging him to “get Threads”, Mark Zuckerberg’s rival to Elon Musk’s X, were being dropped into his Instagram feed featuring embedded posts of uniformed girls as young as 13 with their faces visible and, in most cases, their names.
The children’s images were used by Meta after their parents had posted them on Instagram to mark their return to school. The parents were unaware that Meta’s settings permitted it to do this. One mother said her account was set to private, but the posts were automatically cross-posting to Threads where they were visible. Another said she posted the picture to a public Instagram account. The posts of their children were highlighted to the stranger as “suggested threads”.
Meta is a disgusting company and Zuckerberg is an embarrassment for humanity.

It's not about caring but about effectiveness. Even if I'm one of those suckers that "vote with his wallet", I know that it's naive to think that cancelling a subscription will move the needle for corporations like Disney.
Consider also the collateral damages of a hypothetical successful anti-Disney campaign: layoffs, drop in the stock market with impacts on pension funds, projects cancelled with third parties (so more layoffs and drops in the stock market), ...
The right protest here (IMHO) is against Trump, MAGA, and especially who voted for them. That may be more effective and with less collateral damages than trying to bankrupt Disney by cancelling Disney+ from the couch.

The concept sounds excellent, although there is fairly limited mobile support.
Since NodeBB is an installable PWA it would be definitely nice to have it supported there as well.

There was also an Akkoma PR, it was closed by the author: akkoma.dev/AkkomaGang/akkoma/p…. I don't quite understand the reasoning, perhaps @smitten could clarify.

It raises a good point though, where if you serve
web+ap://, it's not understood by clients that are not aware of this scheme. If there were a way a client could communicate whether there is a protocol handler registered, then the server could tailor its response.silverpill likes this.

in reply to julian • • •Glad to see more people having this idea! The problems we ran into were in helping the browser understand the address and know where to forward. Each server implements lookup routes differently, so there's not necessarily a generic path that you can trust is available on https on the person's home server, even if you know their home server origin. So in some ways the feature should be offered by your home server software, maybe offering a website that does the handler registration to its known lookup/redirect address.
But that is limiting in a few ways. It's a lot of extra steps for each person to do (browsers' default UI for registering protocols is not obvious or easy). It doesn't carry over to different devices, and if you have more than one home server in some way, you are back dealing with that not-great browser UI to pick which handler you want.
In general people are more accustomed to registering protocols to apps they have installed, especially phone apps. It's much easier to register them there and you don't have to have approval flow UI, but taking that approach moves this whole served handler route out of the backend again, so we have to start thinking more along the lines of web+ap-compatible servers that handler clients know how to call or bounce to.
